Tuesday scent of the day 3/10

Posted by Robin on 10 March 2015 162 Comments

Detail, Absinthe Robette poster

Happy Tuesday, and happy Mario Day to any Nintendo fans! Do tell us your fragrance of the day if you have a spare moment.

I am wearing something from perfumer Olivia Giacobetti again: L'Artisan Parfumeur Fou d'Absinthe, from 2006.

Reminder: this Friday, 13 March, we're doing Old School Niche: wear a perfume from L'Artisan Parfumeur, Diptyque or Frederic Malle. Double bonus points if the fragrance was released before 2010!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m glad to know that it is Mario day today :)

SOTD is Le Parfum de Therese. Very old school niche, in a way. I don’t know when Roudnitska created it but a long time before Malle brought it out.

I see you are sticking to Giacobetti. I’ve never tried Fou d’Absinthe though I’m assuming I would love it. I love most things anise in fragrance.

Love Therese, and yes, perfect old school niche!

Fou d’Absinthe is one of the few L’Artisans that was introduced as a masculine, not unisex, IIRC.

I’m not surprised it was launched as a men’s. I’d say it’s their most masculine by far, at least to my nose.

To me, it isn’t as masculine as Mechant Loup, or the pirate one that I can’t remember the name of :-)

In your review you label it as “coming out” as a masculine. Now you have me wondering which one the Pirate one was.

Looked it up — L’Eau du Navigateur. That one and Mechant Loup were definitely masculine, and maybe they just didn’t advertise them that way? But they definitely did a men’s coffret in a gray box that had both, plus 2 others, can’t remember which.

I love those coffrets. They should bring them back as mix and match sets. My men’s coffret included Fou, Loup, and Timbuktu. It came in the circus box so I’m surprised they didn’t include Dzing.

I bought a lovely Christmas theme coffret two January sales ago with Timbuktu, Fou d’Absinthe and Coeur de Vetiver. I wear Fou quite a lot and find it more green than masculine.

          • Robin says:
            10 March 2015 at 5:10 pm

Sounds like there were several similar coffrets, and who knows, maybe I’m remembering the scents wrong. I seem to remember it was done in a gray fabric box, maybe tweed?

SOTD: L’Artisan too! Bois Farine :)
The weather warmed up little during the weekend and I thought spring had finally come but the temperature took a dive again this morning.. looks like winter is here to stay for a while longer.

The L’Artisan for today is Drole de Rose by the incredible Olivia Giacobetti. A very pretty candied rose and violet little number that perfectly complements the baby pink shirt I’m wearing today!

Last week I realized I had no perfumes from a female perfumer! I’ve tried many Giacobetti for L’artisan, for example, but never bought any. Something I will definitely work to remedy. I have my eye on some Nicolai perfumes. I owned, loved, and ran out of a bottle of L’eau chic.

I’m thinking of wearing ISM today. Hopefully it will stop raining today and dry up.

SOTD is Diptyque Philosykos. First time trying it and WOW. I love it and at first spray, it went high up on my FB list. Also, I don’t see how this could offend anyone so I feel like I could spray with abandon. And finally, I was in a meeting this morning and trying to discreetly smell my wrist … Wonder if it was noticable

I bought a bottle of Caron Third Man without testing first because it received 5 stars in The Guide. I saw it for an incredible price at fragrancenet and could not resist.

I’m trying it for the first time today, and luckily I love it – maybe my husband will wear it too. I think it will make a great spring/summer cologne (not that I don’t already have plenty of fragrances that fit this category).

I was thinking about EdO last night when I was trying to make a list of all the “cosmetic” and “powdery” fragrances that I have (trying to brace myself to combat potential urge for Misia). And I suddenly remembered EdO, which is just so lovely. It’s very “fuzzy sweater”. I also realize that have a lot of powdery fragrances!

I went for some comfort with Lolita Lempicka EDP. I only have this one Lolita Lempicka fragrance. I have come close to buying minis of some of the others, because Fragrancenet has some great deals on several minis in this range, but I don’t know which I would like the best. I’m trying to cut down on my purchases. Looking at my spreadsheet yesterday, I found that I spent over $200 on perfume in February.

I have the greatest difficulty in escaping the Call of the Mini. Have been tempted several times by the original LL, myself, but so far have managed to tell myself to wait. I’d like a mini of one of the Midnight versions but those are tough to find.

I have an older used bottle of LL that my sister gave up that I’d be happy to swap or give away if you want it. She off-loaded a bunch of her frags about 3 years ago, and I just took all of them, even though I don’t wear them.

Ver pretty graphic today, Robin. I’m wearing Ice Station Pineapple (Smell Bent) again today.

I get up at 4 a.m., and I think that’s why springing forward doesn’t affect me too much. It’s always dark when I leave for work! I do love the longer days — more time for exploring the river parkway with my husband. It’s getting warm, so it’s time to look for cool reptiles!

I was very inspired by Angie’s chypre post yesterday which has derailed my “L’AP week” intentions. I am wearing Amouage Beloved today. It’s been a long time since I’ve put some on b/c I horde my LD. Today I’m getting a lot of similarity to the middle of PdNs Temps d’une Fete and also a tad of the bitter green/ warm sandalwood base in AG Heure Exquise edt. Very interesting…. Cheers!

I was sorely tempted, I had my hand on the beautiful little glass Elsa Perretti bottle that houses my vintage Halston, that everything but the kitchen sink floral Chypre, so prevalent in the 1970s, virtually extinct now. I will put some on after yoga! Angie’s Chypre post was very inspiring!

I love LTdF (as everybody knows by now!) and really enjoy HE… but did not get on with Beloved. I found it powdery-dusty in a Habanita sort of way. I don’t know why.

Ah, well, I do get along with Habanita which is nice for me.. but a very little of it goes a very long way. I was thinking about what you said about Mitsouko and fruits and chypres in the post yesterday. I will admit that even though I love Mitsouko, I don’t really want to wear it nearly as much as I do the green or rose chypres. Fruits can definitely be tricky.

Yesterday was my birthday, so I went out with my friends for lunch and then shopping at Nieman Marcus. I did go a *little* overboard on make up but the SA was very generous and gave me samples of 12 Jo Malone perfumes, some Candy shower gel, Gucci Guilty Black hand lotion and a little D&G mirror. I bought Molton Brown shower gel in Oudh Accord and Gold. My SOTD is Le Labo Rose 31 and the combo is so big I had to open a window! (It’s a balmy 38 degrees). Thank goodness I work at home!

That made me laugh. I’m about to talk my husband into getting a smartphone… he uses his cell more than the rest of us in the family do, but he’s been insisting that he doesn’t need one. Well, okay, I take the point, he doesn’t NEEEEEEEED one, but as time goes on and people keep assuming that you have one, you miss out on things. Not to mention getting behind in terms of technology.

I am holding out as long as possible to get a smart phone, only because I’ll only have it in my hands for about 10 seconds before my daughter will claim it forever. I don’t want to get 2 smartphones, so I’m sticking with my dinosaur flip phone for as long as I can. Besides, if I got a smart phone, I’d need to get new reading glasses and a thumb brace…. Smaller is not better for me!

Heh. My newish smartphone is a prepaid one, which is all I need, really. Daughter has one at college, older son bought his own (prepaid) with his birthday money, younger son has lost two prepaid phones already so he’s making do with my old full-keyboard one (which WILL access the internet, but you can’t actually read anything on it so it’s functionally disabled).

This is a beautiful fragrance! But since it is a rose chypre, it comes off as a dark sexy rose. In fact, I consider it to be one of my top two rose scents (the other being Nahema). I think in order to understand “chypre” you will have to smell a lot of other (vintage) chypres because they usually have something going on besides the chypre base. Do you have any Mitsouko? Because that’s a classic one.

I’ve been using my 1ml sample I purchased from STC and I’m finding a couple of dabs is all I need. I would like to try this sprayed however.

I drive by a Hermes on the way to work, but haven’t bothered to stop in because some of the reviews made me think Cuir d’Ange might be too light/wispy. But if you get good results from dabbing, maybe it’s worth a trip, after all!

I got Hermes to send me a sample of it, which came in a spray rather than their usual dabber vials and I don’t think it’s light or wispy at all. I would call it a moderately assertive leather.

Sampling PdN Kiss Me Tender. It is quite almondy, which I was looking for, but it’s also a bit bubblegum. I think I like it, but it feels a bit babyish and silly for the office… It would be better suited for a stay home, wear pajamas, and eat pastries kind of day.

SOTD is the original Anna Sui. Despite its boho/glam/goth mystique, on me it’s rose/iris with soft powder and a hint of raspberry. Could almost be a Victorian scent. And I love its deep purple/black retro bottle.

Another day in the 50’s here today. Yesterday I took an almost-spring afternoon walk, the first time in months sans boots, gloves, scarf, and hat, only the sunshine on my head. I felt 50 pounds lighter, I cannot describe my joy!

So now trying Songes (no), Mandragore (disappeared in an instant), Grand Amour (no), Ambre Fetiche (ooooo. ok so it WAS a bit much for dinner time, but still, me likeee), and today I’m in Encens Flamboyant (nice, but I have other incenses I prefer). Later: Duel.

AGs are pretty much all over the place for longevity. Many of them are very transparent and not long lasting, and don’t let the “eau” fool you either – some of the eaus last a long time, eg. Eau de Monsieur, Eau de Sud, Eau de Ciel. The longest lived AGs that I have are Songes edp, which you don’t like, Ce Soir ou Jamais edp, Mandragore Pourpre, Ninfeo Mio, Gardenia Passion, Sables, and Duel. On me, Duel lasts very, very long time, longer than I actually care for. Medium range AGs (IMHO) are Heure Exquise, Vanille Exquise, Rose Splendide, the original Neroli and Chevrefeuille, Mandragore edp, Grand Amour edp. I’ve tried the new Vetiver edc, and that really, no joke, lasted for 8 minutes before it completely disappeared. A very beautiful, but brief life. If it was only about $30 for that bottle, sure. But $170? No way. Good luck.

Some days I really like it, and like parts of it, and then some days it kind of annoys me. Thankfully it layers well with other citrus edcs, so I can get over it. I definitely don’t need the 3.4 oz that I have.

For Old School week I will probably be wearing Bois Farine, in the simultaneous spirit of digging through the sample stash.
BUT! Question about yesterday’s experiment. I was wearing FM Noir Epices, which I think I might be anosmic to, as I dabbed on about 1/2 ml (what was left in the vial) and barely smelled any spice. Then, at the resto, a lady said I smelled like her “favourite old Auntie who always wore…White something.”
Now, I did get a hit of aldehydes, maybe, from the FM. Could it smell like White Linen? Was my sample off, or is there a similarity there? Was I offending in my (perhaps anosmic) dosage?

I haven’t smelled this, so have no idea if it smells like White Linen, but I don’t think you offended. When someone tells you that you remind them of a good/happy smell, then by definition you can’t be offensive.

The decant of Noir Epices I have is at least 5+ years old. It is pretty major to me. One or two small squirts dabbed around will do me for many hours. I don’t know if there is something changed or you are anosmic. IMHO Noir Epices is stronger and deeper than something like Chanel Coco. (I think they are very similar with NE having more scratchy patch). Does that help?

Noir Epices is a huge suffocating spice bomb (to me – I know lots of people love it!), so either your sample is mislabeled, has turned or you are anosmic to it! And the fact that it possibly smells like White Linen or White Shoulders makes me think that it is the sample, not you!

Noir Epices smells nothing like White Linen. I have a recent sample of NE and it is a very dry spicy fragrance with rose. Sort of highly concentrated mulled wine.
I love both by the way but they only share “the rose”.

Wish I had bought a bottle when it was half price, right before it was discontinued (though of course, didn’t know at the time that it was being discontinued!). Luckily a friend gave me her bottle before she moved across country – she knew I liked it and was getting rid of things, so I think of her when I wear it.

Terre d’Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche, which is very pleasant, all day. The original Terre is amazing, unchallenged, but perhaps a tad toward the XY scale? The lighter eau, for all that the internet seemed to not like it, was more wearable for me.

Weird perfumista question–any of you Fitbit or other tech wearers have trouble with the band absorbing scents? Mine is less than a week on the wrist, and is, erm, quite fragrant! Advice? …and FWIW, going scentless on that wrist is a heck no! :D

I like the Eau Craiche version as well. While at an airport shop, I accidentally sprayed TdH original which I do like but did not want to smell of it then. I remedied it by spritzing Guerlain Mandarine Basilic!

I’m a fitBit dropout for now but when I was wearing it , I used the waistband option and I also hardly ever wear perfume on skin so no probs on a perfume smelling band.

Uh, oh. Good to know I’m not imagining this. My coworker said she couldn’t smell a thing.
It’s a crazy mix of Terre Eau Fraiche, Fille de Berlin, Aroma M Black, Bois d’Argent, Parfum de Therese and more. At roughly two scents a day for me, some BIG, this could get weird, quick.

Oh dear. I don’t have the band, I have the Zip, and mostly it stays clipped to my bra (since I lost my first one while wearing it on my waistband). But had been considering upgrading to the wristband. Hmm. Hmm. Serious problem – especially given what happened to me the other day with Memoir and Tuvache Gardenia combining in such a spectacularly stinky fashion…

I’m thinking about making some sort of extender, and making a anklet. I’ll look like I’m being monitored, and I AM! I think the silly thing lies about my steps anyway–I use my arms quite a bit, and it adds steps. If it were on my leg, that would be more accurate. From a perfume standpoint, it would help, a bit, but I also like wearing fragrance on the ankles. I’m more likely to cede that territory, than wrists.
