Tuesday scent of the day 3/3

Posted by Robin on 3 March 2015 176 Comments

Voltaire bank note

If you have a free moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing Aftelier Candide, by Mandy Aftel. I really love this one, and was so sorry to see that it was discontinued. I blame the rest of you for not buying it. (Just kidding, of course. It's on my buy list but I never bought it either.)

Reminder: this Friday, 6 March, we're celebrating International Women's Day — wear a perfume by a female perfumer.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD: Histoires de Parfums 1876; Mata Hari. I don’t know if this one was composed by Sylvie Jourdet as most of the earlier HdP scents were. It’s an interesting take on rose anyway, and supposedly inspired by a woman.

You are too good at this! In fact I have been happily exploring NST and reading some of the older articles (including the various female perfumer lists).

Wanted to also add that I see you are wearing a Mandy Aftel creation….I spend a ridiculously large amount of money last year buying not only samples but her essential oil isolates….unfortunately nothing seemed to work for me……and even more frustrating was that the essential oils I bought to add to my coconut oil for a body butter (various fruit isolates) I found for a fifth of the price on another online e.o. distributor after the fact….that really taught me a lesson on shopping around!

I think I may give Cuir Gardenia one more try tomorrow….I really want to love an Aftelier !

I hope, but obviously don’t know, that her essential oils are higher quality and that explains the cost, but it’s an expensive brand in any case!

Today I am sampling Bodicea the Victorious Imperial. This one is a powerhouse, both comforting and fierce. It is difficult for me to pinpoint distinct notes other than a definite wave of amber. The website mentions lavendar and since they pointed it out I notice it too. My sample is a lil 1.5ml dabber. I can see how this would easily be intimidating if generously sprayed. This won’t do the fragrance justice but the best way I can describe it is a more complex, deeper, regal relative of J.Simpson Fancy Nights.

I have a very small bottle of Fancy Nights. When I wear it I think, hey this smells like a watered down Coromandel. Then I’ve thought is smells a lot like a more sheer version of the original Prada Ambre for women. So, now I read what you are saying about BTVI. Fancy Nights must be some sort of sweet patch chameleon.

We’ve been having weather in the 40s (F) and our snow is melting, but we’re supposed to get more in a few days. All the same, there’s a sense that the earth is getting ready to wake again.

So many are doing a women perfumers week – and I love the idea! I discovered that many of my favorites (IdI, Cuir de Lancome, Therorema, Mille et Une Roses, Putain des Palaces, Amber Fetiche) were composed by women! But then I had to wear Iris Poudre today. Some days a specific perfume calls and you HAVE to answer!

I am wearing AG Mon Parfum Cherie par Camille EDP of an unknown vintage (decant purchased from STC a few years ago). Really wonderful. My decant is almost empty and I’m considering a FB purchase. Has anyone tried the reissued EDT in the new packaging? Does it still smell good?

I’m wearing the sample of Rose Rebelle Respawn I got at Twisted Lily this weekend when Thegoddessrena and LizzieB and I had our weekend sniffing funsies. I really like it, but it stays so close to the skin that I doubt anyone else could smell it. I can somewhat, but not as much as I’d like.

What’s everyone else’s take on this one?

Hey Floragal – hope you’re well!

I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s had this experience, but it is disappointing. I wonder if there is some way to make it project more – maybe my signature human room diffuser method of spraying my hair and tossing it in people’s direction? 🙂

        Well chosen!

The three of us (Thegoddessrena, LizzieB and I) each tried it on skin this weekend, and it was wildly different on each one of us. I got no mint at all, and much more rose than the other two. And the chocolate is more than a dusting. So interesting.

Like ihadanidea, I’m wearing a creation by Sophia Grojman. YSL’s Champagne/Yvresse is a go-big-or-go-home 80s fruity chypre. I’m sure it will last me all day, and probably into tomorrow!

I really like Sophia Grojsman’s output, generally. (Didn’t get on with Champagne, but I think that was just due to my fruity-chypre queasiness issue.)

Dense, chewy, cake-like jasmine seems to be the thing I want as I get more and more tired of winter.

This might just be a weird example of how variable people’s perceptions can be, but jasmine sometimes gives me the very distinct sense of texture and seems food-y/dessert-y even when it’s not particularly sweet. It’s more of a mouth sensation for me than a nose sensation, if that makes sense.

Oh, that totally makes sense. There is a certain musk that I call “mouth musk” because it is like screechy laundry musk in my mouth and I can’t wear those scents. I can’t think of a pleasant mouth-scent conflation, but your experience of jasmine sounds fun!

Yes it is, which is really sad b/c IMHO it was very different from the other frags in her early collection and the base is also smells different than the others. I don’t wear it as much as I should (my mantra for pretty much all my frags really), but it is lovely. Soft, spicy, musky. It is very pretty, softly sensual. It doesn’t really smell like anything that’s out there b/c Laurie has a way with her musky bases. But it’s definitely in the oriental family with Theorema (the orange parts), Coco (the spicy & cinnamony parts) , and maybe something floral-oriental, creamy, musky like PdN’s Sacrebleu. I’ll also add that I heard once it’s similar to something like DK’s Chaos or Black Cashmere, but I can’t smell either of those b/c of musk anosmia.

Hey Laurie – if you are lurking – BRING BACK FEMME JOLIE!!! 🙂 😉

An ugly day here – snow/sleet/freezing rain/rain! A good day to hibernate, sort seed packets, and dream of planting. Like Mais, I know that the earth is beginning to stir at its core despite the still- frozen snow cover. SOTD is YR Neonatura Cocoon, dry, dusky cocoa, patchouli, (non-sweet) vanilla: a scent that is primal, loamy, earthy. Perfect for waiting, patiently, seed packets in hand, for spring . .

Ugh – we won’t see real earth stirring spring until the very end of April. I live through my garden books and catalogs all winter.

Does anyone know if it’s true that deer won’t eat tree peony? Those bambi-bast@rds eat EVERYTHING! I want something substantial in my garden that I don’t have to put a cage around.

no kidding, had 2 hang out in my backyard all morning yesterday. Spread some deer repellant around in the afternoon, now it’s snowing/drizzling, so it was probably all for naught. They’re so hungry at this time of yr that they’ll eat anything. Grrrr!

The problem is that deer don’t read the lists of stuff they’re not supposed to eat – LOL

I plant lots of supposedly deer-proof things… then give up on the stuff they eat after all.

I’ve had one lately that even eats MINT. Maybe I can identify him/her by the minty fresh breath ;^)

I use a rather common term for the fact that our deer will eat anything! The only things I’ve never seen them eat are catmint (nepeta) and russian sage. So… now I’m planning an garden of two plants, lol!

HdP Tubereuse 1 on one arm and Tubereuse 3 on the other. I havent tried no2. Not sure of no1, and earlier when I tried no3 i really disliked it as I found it heavy and cloying. Was brave enough to try it again and now im enjoying it! Really spicy. I get cinnamon, but the notes dont mention spices at all…

I really like Tubereuse 3 (one of the few tuberose scents I wear). Could it be the immortelle that seems spicy?

Maybe.. maybe its just my nose, because it does smell rather different than it did before! But I do have immortel in other things that dont smell like cinnamon..
Oh well, it doesnt matter really- im just glad its decided to smell nicer than before! 🙂

Today it is Guerlain’s Heritage, as close to a signature scent as any I have. Even more than Habit Rouge, this seems to me to be the male counterpart to Shalimar. I stick to masculines (vive la difference) but like it when they reference much loved feminines as Heritage does in this case.

I love this one. This is the only super-animalic base perfume that I like out of the entire universe of perfumes.

Unless the pricing changed, the per mL price for the samples is less than the one for the 2 mL mini.

Continuing my sample a day expedition, SOTD = Maroc pour Elle. In the beginning I got strong incense and flowers, now it is faded away (more than I hoped) to a close to the skin amber-ish, vannilla-ish coziness with an occasional hint of chocolate, which I did not expect. I expected maybe a bit MORE, but this is very nice. Doesn’t beat out Seville a l’Aube, tho – seems that is my favorite scent right, and I find myself comparing each of the new ones I have tested to that.

Maroc would last a week on me if I didn’t shower (and went all elegant hippie). I’m sure if you asked nicely Mr. Tauer would say whether he had to reformulate it or not. Or maybe you just didn’t put on enough when you were testing, lol!

SOTD is CSP Vanille Mokha. I don’t like to drink coffee, but love the smell so love this one – and it’s not as sickly sweet as most other CSPs. I only have a decant I got from swapping so just looked around and see it was discontinued. There are some reasonable ones on ebay, so I just may have to get some more!

I am ashamed that I don’t know the perfumers of most of my scents! Except my SSS and Aftelier samples. So will have to look at the lists and see what I have for Friday.

No scent yet, as I’m pondering running by the mall to try out Bronze Goddess. Still deciding about this one.

We’re having a weird ice/snow/rain mix today, but it’s warming up. I’m calling it ‘pre-spring’. I realize that calling the 30’s ‘warm’ might be a stretch, but it gets warm enough to melt some of this snow, so that’s good by me. I consider pre-spring to be a time when we still get winter precipitation, but it doesn’t stick around for long. Also, the cat shed her winter coat, which strikes me as a good sign.

Giving vintage Jardins de Bagatelle a spin in cool weather. I’ve always thought of it as a spring/summer scent, but something about it has always reminded me of My Sin so I thought it should work on this late winter day (calling for another 5″ to 10″ of snow!).

JdB was the first Guerlain I ever really wanted – back when I was about 15 or 16, so I have a very fond place for it in my heart. I remember the old print ad with the blonde girl running? riding a horse? I have an older bottle (chevron box), but I hardly ever wear it. I still have the nearly empty bottle of JdB fragrance talc that I wore to my senior prom sitting on my dresser. I was yearning to be sooooo sophisticated back then! Ha, ha. I’ve never smelled My Sin, so hmmm….

Here’s a poll: what you wore – dress (tux?) and frag – for your senior prom!

Just put on some Mate, Heliotrope& Patchouli by Dame Perfumery. This is surprisingly a nice, calming fragrance. Not too sweet, not too powdery, but just enough of all the right things to soothe the spirits. I like this more than I expected to. I am using a sample of this, but will see how it wears throughout the day. If all goes well, this could be a contender for a FB.
This is perfect for anyone whose feeling under the weather and wants to wear a scent to make them feel better. Maybe its the patchouli.

Well, I have felt totally BELEAGUERED the past week and half!

So it’s back to my swap sample of Saffron Troublant- it just flips the right switch at this particular point in time.

On the upside, I have been waxing and waning over the purchase of a FB of Onda VdE when my “no buy” restrictions have expired in April and have had a complete turn around.

Instead, I decided to use that money for personal training to add to my spin routine. Health, both physical and mental, comes before any perfume, even one as gorgeous as Onda.

I have really come to enjoy working out and pushing my limits physically. I’ll never be the proud owner of a 6 pack, but that’s not what I’m going for.

I’m going for balance and attaining my exercise induced transcendental health and well being.

Sorry this is so off topic, but it’s good to make a decision one can really be happy with!

Wishing all happiness, health, and wonderful smells!

LOVE exercising and feeling strong! This last year, I switched up my goals to go for straight-up strength–no namby-pamby stuff for me any more–and it feels like such a liberation. And as you say, the goal is strength, not a six pack (although I wouldn’t mind some obvious bicepts! :] ). Keep up the good work! (And maybe treat yourself with a bottle of perfume for reaching some milestone down the road!)

Agree with you both – the bottle is both substantial AND beautiful. (Would also make a great weapon with the corners!)

I haven’t done a side by side but I don’t find it that similar to Terre d’H. They both have vetiver but while Terre is warm and expansive, I find Encre Noire to have a quite bracing feel. Its like hot sand on the side and bitter black roots on the other. Some people compare Terre to Sel de Vetiver and while there are similarities I find the latter to be brighter and more effervescent while the former has more depth.

Clearly, I think more about these things than is strictly healthy…

Oh yes, they are very different. When I say ‘contest’ I mean that I am trying to decide on a vetiver fragrance to add to my collection and Terre d’Hermes is still the front runner. Ideally I’d have both plus the Guerlain, Sel de Vetiver, and Vetiver Tonka.

SOTD = Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Oeillet Rouges

This is a wonderful spicy carnation soliflor and very long lasting. I am somewhat freaking out that the 2nd atomizer top for this is malfunctioning like the first one – first plunge was fine, 2nd was sticky (so only a little came out) and the 3rd one was just plain stuck. I guess I’ll have to write them again — it was probably a bad batch of atomizers OR the perfume itself may be more viscuous than normal.

Oh, that’s a shame. Equipment malfunctions are so annoying.

SOTD was Le Dix. I barely get any fruity top notes; it goes on all florals and aldehydes on me (or maybe mine is too old for top notes), then has a long creamy drydown. Love it.

Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours… Today was its first wearing and I am impressed. It has been going strong for 12 hours now. Expensive but worth it.

Voyage d’Hermes has been a delight today. Thanks for the reminder, Robin. I love the bit of mineral note there.

Whoops, meant to comment under the review of M. Li and his garden. I guess here is ok, too. 😉
