Monday scent of the day 2/2

Posted by Robin on 2 February 2015 168 Comments

orange-1

Happy Groundhog Day! And boo hiss to six more weeks of winter. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Parfum d'Empire Azemour les Orangers. I've been wearing it all weekend after an incredibly kind reader sent me a bottle (!) to celebrate this blog's 10th birthday, which is coming up on Sunday.

And if anyone is free on Sunday (2/8), I'd like to do a special community project: wear a fragrance you learned about on Now Smell This, whether from a review, another reader, a swap, anything. We'll still do our "regular" project on Friday (2/6), when we're celebrating National Grapefruit month. Wear a fragrance with grapefruit; extra credit if Grapefruit (or Pamplemousse or Pomelo or whatever) is in the name of the scent.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

There used to be someone in my office who wore Coco Mademoiselle at nuclear levels. She eventually stopped, so I think her immediate co-workers must have staged and intervention or asked their supervisor to intervene. It did smell great on her, but it was way too much.

Black Orchid is one of my psychological armor fragrances. When I wear it, I feel like a Valkyrie, like I am inhabiting the skin of a gorgeous Warrior Goddess. There is nothing else like it……

That is so sweet! I love perfume people.

I’m wearing Botrytis, which is almost a dupe for Hedonist (or, I suppose, Hedonist is almost a dupe for this?). Smells like honey wine.

My SOTD is my holy grail vanilla: Vaniglia del Madagascar by i Profumi di Firenze. I heard about it on NST, so I’ll probably wear it on 2/8. I am almost finished with a 12 ml bottle, and I just ordered a 50 ml bottle.

Montale Jasmin Full today. I went through my perfume cabinet yesterday and pulled out a bunch of stuff I don’t wear. I’m hoping I can sell them on ebay for enough to cover a bottle of Wit–this past weekend’s comments didn’t quell the longing.

Dragged my humongous bottle of Histoires de Parfums 1804 out of the perfume cabinet. Pineapple and peach are two notes that I find challenging in perfume. There are a lot of things I like about this scent, but I can’t ever seem to get to any deeper state of appreciation or love.

Awesome! Congrats on the lovely perfume!

Today is SUCH a Monday *head*desk*. Exhausted, slushy cold weather outside, and looking like a zombie. I got a sample of Paco Rabanne 1 Million with a Sephora order and read the notes: ooh, a bit of leather? Sure!
BLARRRRRGGHHH!!! It’s not a scrubber but it’s definitely not worth bothering with. Rather odd almost calone-ish opening. The “leather” is more like “pleather” (really synthetic smelling) and has no oomph at all. Definitely a stereotypical masculine scent. I’m ok with wearing men’s fragrances, but this is too mainstream cliche for my taste. It’s utterly boring.

I haven’t leveled up or unlocked the “traveling perfumista” badge yet. I don’t take any perfumes or decants with me. I’m still feeling a bit scattered too from when I was mugged. I’m using an older purse now, but haven’t replaced my wallet or half the stuff that was stolen. I’m almost afraid to take too much with me now while I’m still living in the city. But that will change soon! Fiance and I may be putting an offer on a house next weekend.

Anyhoo, I can live with this boring-ness for the day, but will definitely put on something nice this evening. Maybe Vanille Incensee.

I brought Safran Troublant to put on when I got to work this morning (I was little nauseated when I woke up, so didn’t want to spritz before driving in), but instead of applying it once I settled into my morning, I wound up using my Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange lotion – definitely a cheerful citrus to combat the Mondays…

SOTD is DSH Jacinthe de Sapphir. LOVED the first five minutes’ worth (little hit of galbanum, tiny sparkle of aldehydes, big hyacinth), and also the next half hour (could have sworn it was a floral chypre at that point). Now, however, it’s all woody basenotes and I’m bored. Also, it’s starting to head for the Dreaded Youth Dew effect.

May have to bag it and respritz yesterday’s RL Safari.

I’m kind of disappointed that neither Jacinthe de Sapphir nor Deco Diamonds worked for me–didn’t get Youth Dew, but that would be a sure-fire deterrent. The other sample I got is WANT, which screams summer, so I’ll wait to test that one.

My world today is all blue-and -white and my Keep-it-Simple Monday scent CM’s Pure Frost perfectly captures the day outside my window. It was our turn in the Midwest this weekend for a blizzard, we got 19 inches of snow Sat/Sun + 8 degree temps this morning. But the sun is shining brightly today in a clear blue sky, we’re all plowed out, backyard birds all fed and watered and gracing us with their presence, and so the week begins with another snow-day-for-kids and WFH-day-for-parents.

Congrats, Robin, on 10 years! Your scent sounds wonderful, I must try, I love zingy oranges.

Wow, that’s a lot of snow. You don’t seem too bothered by it, which is great! Once again we were supposed to get snow, but ended up with another near-miss situation. It snowed a little and now it’s all cold rain. Enjoy your wfh day!

I’m not bothered by it because 1) we had lots of warning so we could lay in food supplies and get errands done, 2) I’m not the one who pushes the snowblower (I do shovel when it’s an inch or two,) 3) all our neighbors pitch in and help each other out and 4) most of all, I didn’t have to drive in it! Plus today it’s absolutely beautiful and peaceful to look out on.

Glad to hear that you’re safe and sound, Laila. What birds are you seeing? On my walk during lunch I had White-crowned Sparrows, a Black Phoebe, Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Nuttall’s Woodpecker, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and an Anna’s Hummingbird.

No warblers, kinglets or hummingbirds here until May at the earliesr. Only the usual assemblage of many cardinals (they’ve been here for generations!), blue jays who alert all when there’s a fresh supply of peanuts, a few woodpeckers (downy, red-headed, flickers), an occasional white-breasted nuthatch accompanied by the cheery black-capped chickadees, always the ubiquitous sparrows, and the sweet family of mourning doves who gather to warm their feet on the rim of our heated birdbath just before sunset.

This year I just might participate in the Great American Backyard Birdcount over Valentine’s weekend and give more than just a passing glance to what’s out there – perhaps I’ll be surprised!

I have yet to try Drôle de Rose. I love Putain des Palaces, which I think is on the same vein. There really are quite a few strong contenders for Misia to beat!

Yes Putain is another violet-rose. I haven’t tried that one in a long time so ought to do so again. I really need to retry LR as I love these candied roses and am very partial to the Malles on the whole.

I love Putain des Palaces (it’s on my FB list) as well. I wanted to like Lipstick Rose more that I do … it wasn’t very strong or long lasting on me. I felt like I kept waiting for something to show up, or like something was missing. Maybe I am anosmic to something in it?? I do love a good rose and violet combination though, maybe Misia will work out better.

Adding to the chorus–between Lipstick Rose and my beloved Attrape Coeur/Guet Apens, Misia has to set an awfully high bar to keep my attention! But, of course, I will still be happy to sniff if some crosses my path!

I thought my No. 19 Poudre would go the way of the other unpopulars… But I have been wearing it all weekend and again today, so it seems to have escaped the cut 😉

Byredo Blanche to be neutral enough to go perfume testing at Lush.

Sprayed on Sikkim Girls on my hand based on the review here and got a sharp green, vegetal iris scent out of it. Went back, was told it was me and my pH. I asked the SA if I could wash it off and if she had unscented soap at hand to do it. Nope. 😉

Then sprayed Lust on one hand and Imogen Rose on the other. Hm. Lust is nice but a bit too linear. Might do an evening of Vivienne Westwood Boudoir to forget it all.

Hey, we’re twinsies today! I LOVE Memoir! It was one of my first swoons. I guess it can be a hot mess on some people, but for me, it’s all leather and boozy wine/grape jelly (in a classy way)! I love that it changes so much as I wear it, and from wearing to wearing, so it’s quite difficult to pin down. (In case you find yourself in need of a lifetime’s supply–as you say, a little goes a long way!–I have seen it at discount sites from time to time, making it slightly less ridiculously priced. :] )

What is even IN THIS THING?? it took me several wearings… maybe eight instead of twelve if I’m being serious about it… and I was going to review it for the blog, but finally I realized there was a honking big white floral in the middle, sandwiched between the weird Serge-Noirey topnotes and the leather on the bottom. I love it, I do.

SOTD = Le Labo Iris 39

It’s bright and perky and salty, just right for this drab grey snowy drizzly slushy day in NYC. The street are just bleh muddy and dirty and I swear that cabbies purposely drive on the puddles and spin their wheels to spray everyone within 20 feet.

As the official NST newbie iris-lover, how is it compared to other irises? I’ve heard mixed things, and something about Le Labo (super expensive, city exclusives, unwilling to come up with damn names for their perfumes, blah) irks me.

However, if it is something phenomenal, I am willing to sell out, of course!

The iris in Le Labo Iris 39 is bright and fizzy, helped along by “clean” patchouli, ylang-ylang, lime amd civet.

Ramon Monegal Impossible Iris has a similar bright iris.

I’m an iris lover, and frankly, this is one of my favorite irises and favorite scents, period. It’s different though — I’d say it has a good hit of a sort of “clean” patchouli, but it’s a long-lasting scent with a lot of projection. The earthiness of the patch and the rootiness of the iris work well together. I just replenished my supply with a very large decant, and last summer I bought the lotion, which is terrific. I certainly recommend sampling it first, as with any fragrance.

Gareth tho really knew what he was talking about, and was candid with his opinions on the offerings! Fun to talk to him.)

Wearing David Yurman extrait today. It is a rose-oud floating on a
carpet of saffron, geranium, sandalwood, vanilla and a bit of suede. Originally selling for $250.00, it can be had for as little as $25.00. In the most interesting kind of reverse snobbism, some would insist that your $25.00 bottle is not as good as there $250.00 bottle, when it is exactly the same thing. You saved $225.00 and smelled great while doing so!

SOTD was HYLND’s Spirit of the Glen. After an unpromising opening (blagh — what was that?), it quickly settled into a richly fruity, oaky, vanillic, slightly liquory thing that, somewhat to my surprise, I enjoyed all day at work. I didn’t get the smoky vibe from the scotch that I expected, but that’s okay. Now that I’ve changed out of my work clothes, I think my wrists smell musty-sour –scrub!! — but the sleeves of today’s sweater still smell wonderful.

SOTD is Chanel 31 Rue Cambon, and I think it’s citrusy enough at the beginning for your photo to work. It also fits your Sunday theme, as I got it in a swap from the generous Audreylicious. I’m not always good at remembering exactly where I read something, and if I’m interested in a perfume I tend to read a bunch of reviews, so I’m going to have to give the topic some thought, and maybe make it a theme for the entire week (except Friday). The 31RC does seem to be gone now, though, so maybe I’ll go to bed with some Yves Rocher Vanille Noire, or maybe something else.

Your Azemour les Orangers sounds lovely, and now I feel I’ll get the chance to try it, with thanks due, as they so often are, to the lovely Hajusuuri. She recommended the Parfums d’Empire sample set to someone in a post last weekend, and I knew that it had become unavailable shortly after I became aware of it in 2013. I checked back occasionally for the next six months, and then wrote it off as yet another thing I had just missed. I was going to reply to her post to let her know it was no longer available, but thought I’d better check one more time, and hey presto! It was back! Huzzah!
