Wednesday scent of the day 1/28

Posted by Robin on 28 January 2015 206 Comments

palm fronds

Happy Wednesday! What's your fragrance today?

I am heading out for a doctor appointment, so I'm commando other than a tiny bit of Bronze Goddess cream, mixed in with my regular unscented lotion.

Reminder: this Friday, 1/30, will be Oud Friday! Wear an oud fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I still can’t believe Sephora and Nordstrom stopped carrying Lolita Lempicka. It was the best mainstream brand on the market, as far as I’m concerned.

I had no idea they stopped. You’re right, it is one of the best mainstream on the market. I know quite a few of my ‘normal’ friends who like this as well as the perfumistas.

Nordstrom has been kind of strange as they find their “place” in the fragrance markets. The past few years they’ve been adding and removing the Katie Perry frags, Jessica Simpson frags, pathetic on again/off again Guerlain, Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Dior selections, no direct links to Chanel, adding unusual niche that don’t get much play or blog press, isolating some frags in their “spa” section, etc etc …. so, aside from the obvious that they are an 800 lb gorilla and still carry plenty, they are also kind of strange about it.

Headed off to yoga, so just the vestiges of L’Occitane’s Almond Shower Oil. Not terribly lingering, but French patisserie goodness while it lasts.

I love that shower oil, and the almond firming cream is great. I love the fragrance and I find the firming cream scent lingers a little longer. I got my mom hooked on it, and now I can’t use it without thinking about her.

When I first tried sampled Ciel, it didn’t make an impression on me at first. It’s really straightforward, and I might have been expecting something really complicated from Amouage & on the other hand, fleeting for a soft floral . But when I wore it, I liked it more & more. And you are right, it does last.

Wearing Chypre Mousse today, the first wear in really cold weather, and it is revelatory! This perfume was made for icy days. Seriously, one an a half spritzes on the torso this morning, and now I’m getting lovely little wafts of it, and got the wafts all through my morning walk through the snow. The cold dampens whatever smells too musty about this, and just lets it shine. I will have to wear it again this winter!

You need to be a fan of fennel to enjoy it. I don’t think I’d buy a bottle because it’s a bit too much for me, but I do like it enough for a decant to wear every once in a while.

Interesting–I don’t really get fennel out of it. Although it happens that I like fennel (and hate anise–the fennel has the saving grace of greenery, but any other anise/licorice/pernod kind of scent or taste is pure evil in my mouth/nose).

    Hi there !

I’m in the process of de-lurking (is that a word?) on about every blog I’ve been reading for ages now. I’ve been enjoying NST for well over 5 years now :)

I am wearing Declaration today, the original 1998 JC Ellena one. Yawn … Wait, there’s a story about it. You see, yesterday I found a vintage bottle of Eau D’Hermès, vintage as of 2006, so that’s saying something about the state of fine fragrances industry but I disgress. The thing is, the sprayer button wouldn’t work. That was a very peculiar mix of joy and disappointment. Anyway, I tried various methods to make it work (I did in the end, yeah!) so I spent the rest of the evening coated in Eau D’Hermès.

I decided this morning that I would rather revisit Eau D’Hermès grandson in the form of Declaration, the Hermes is quite a character to deal with. I’m sitting now happy in my cloud of cedar and cumin, and happy to finally write a few words here.

Welcome! I’m in an ebb and flow of delurking. Lurking usually relates to too much work! At the moment I am packing, moving and dealing with pet export/import after 8 years in Kenya. Lovely smells and the musings from NST-ers here are what keep me sane in a sea of bureaucracy and all of the rest that comes with a big move.

Ok, why are they bad for your clothes? I used tin foil balls for awhile but they turn out to be problematic for some fibers, so went back to dryer sheets.

          • missionista says:
            28 January 2015 at 4:58 pm

Robin, I always learned that they leave a waxy film on your clothes and that is not good for the clothes (or so we were taught when working in a fabric/textile museum. Woolite was a big no-no as well.) A lot of people seem to be up in arms that they contain CHEMICALS, OMG, CHEMICALS ARE SCARY. I don’t automatically dismiss them because of that though, more because of the waxy film. Here’s a pretty good web article: http://household-tips.thefuntimesguide.com/2011/07/fabric-softener.php

          • tiffanie says:

We stopped using dryer sheets at our house 15 years ago because they made my son’s eczema so much worse. When I stopped using them I noticed my skin was clearer, less prone to dryness, and was less itchy. Never looked back. We use white vinegar once in a while when washing towels to fluff them up. Other than that there is no difference in how clothes look coming out of the dryer. And I do not miss the smell of dryer sheets at all.

          • Robin says:
            28 January 2015 at 7:53 pm

Thanks for the link. I admit I don’t care about any of that — I use an unscented dryer sheet from the health food store, if it makes my clothes wear marginally faster I can live with it. Only use them in winter anyway, otherwise too much static. The tin foil balls worked for static too but they eventually shred, and then sometimes they catch on fabric.

I haven’t decided what to wear today but since I have been in a Chanel mood lately, it probably be 31 Rue Cambon. For anyone interested, I found that Homegoods had tons of those Travolo bottles for $5.99. Might be option for AirBureau’s broken sprayer? Keep the pretty bottle but transfer to Travolo to actually use! I don’t think the sprayer has to work properly to transfer to these bottles. Happy Wednesday, y’all!

For me, my “evergreen Christmassy” fragrance would be Fille en Aiguilles rather than this one, because I find the pine note a lot more discreet in NÉ.

SOTD Seville a l’Aube. I have figured out that every time I get an orange blossom forward fragrance, I use it all up rapidly. Another one to put on my to buy list.
But I seem to be in frugal mode – I look at my bank balance and I like what I see, and I don’t want to spoil that by buying something!
So my to buy list is growing, as is my pile of empty sample vials. Guess I need to think about decants. :-)

Eau Aimable/Cologne of Love by Le Couvent des Minimes is a very pretty orange blossom that is long-lasting, inexpensive, non-soapy, and non-indolic. Give it a sniff, and it might go on your to-buy list (for when you are ready to buy something).

No SOTD yet, but I am waiting on some wonderfully fragrant quince, rosewater, and cardamom jam to finish simmering so that I can can it. It smells incredible in the kitchen right now, and my hands smell like cardamom from crushing the pods.

Yesterday, though, I tried SL A La Nuit and I fell in love hard. It’s one of the best Jasmines I’ve smelled, and it’s rather delicate on me. It smells exactly how I want a summer night to smell.

Today, since it feels like a beautiful spring day, I’m thinking either Beige or Temps D’Une Fete.

I lucked out on the quince front. I was in Dallas last weekend, went by an Asian supermarket to pick up a few things on our way out of town, and saw the quince as soon as I walked in. I got a bunch, having no clue what to do with, because they smelled so incredible! Hopefully this jam turns out, but even if it doesn’t, it smells amazing!

And I’ve never thought of myself as a jasmine lover either. Sometimes jasmine can come on a little strong for me, and be a little too indolic, but A La Nuit is totally working.

A la Nuit is wonderful – I was never into jasmine perfumes but I wanted something that smelled like when I lean over the jasmine plant. I got many samples of different jasmine perfumes and A la Nuit is IT – there is a balance between the pretty floral, indole, and green that the real plant has.

I wonder if you could bottle the quince, cardamom, and rose water because I would wear that ;) Did you use a recipe or just make it up?

That’s exactly how it has been for me! I LOVE the smell of real jasmine but all of the jasmines that I have encountered until now are either too indolic, or too sweet, or too…something. This one is just perfect. As soon as I put it on I knew it was love.

I would love to smell like this jam! I used this recipe, which I found when looking for things to do with quince and rosewater:

        http://turmericsaffron.blogspot.com/2011/11/moraba-ye-beh-persian-quince-jam-with.html

Anyway – I’ve been working with oils most days for my perfume class (I can confidently say I am no Jean Claude Ellena), which I think is why I keep returning to my standbys and may be in a kind of rut in terms of what I’ve been wearing lately. Maybe I should apply for the Monday Mail and shake myself out of it.

You should totally go for the Monday Mail! I would be really curious because I run into this problem all of the time. I work at a fragrance store that does custom blending, and we also handle a lot of essential oils. On days when I work there, it’s hard for me to wear perfume and I sometimes get into a perfume rut when I’m working there a lot, which almost seems funny. And I miss it and get grumpy on days when I don’t get to pick out a perfume!

Good Wednesday Morning to everyone! My SOTD is Aedes de Venustas Oeillet Bengale. Fo some strange reason, I enjoy this spicy fragrance in the Fall / Winter. I think that here in Texas (Houston to be exact), it would be too much for the summer. It tends to get in the 100’s here in the Summer and its humid. So, heat and spice doesn’t make a good combo in my opinion.

Not strange, in my opinion. Humidity and heat often make things “too much.”

That said, I think OB might be one of the few incense-floral scents I might want to try in summer. We get humidity here… but not like in TX.

Today I wore Jardin Apres la Mousson for about 5 minutes until I sweated it off :-/
There’s a tropical storm somewhere so this week is HOT and humid and storms coming in. To go along with the tropical theme I just showered with coconut shower gel, then coconut oil body butter and a generous spritz of Pacifica Indian Coconut Nectar. Such a fun scent!

I find Apres la Mousson quite nice and cooling in the heat. Once the melon-ey notes wear off, I usually find there is still a spicy haze remaining which I enjoy too. But in general, I’m also finding my perfumes disappear into the heat (or as you say – get sweated off!)

And it sounds like your weather is much more humid than where I am… Gauteng is quite dry generally. I’m always needing eye drops, lip balm and stuff.

Hmm, I don’t remember smelling that one when I was there. I loved their quirky little shop with the rock floor…and I love the perfume I got from there, the one called Carnaval.

Lyric Woman today. Mine is from 2013 and clearly reformulated. I get no incense, no spice, and almost no rose. I smell ylang-ylang, sandalwood, and vanilla, with just the tiniest bit of rose. It’s sweet and pretty but I would have liked to smell the original.

      Oh no. Really?

I didn’t realize that one had suffered the evil plastic surgery… that’s so sad. I was reading the review of LW on Kafkaesque and marveling that she didn’t get the rose and silvery incense, but instead lots of ylang.

I have a 15ml decant (well, now about half gone) from 2010 or so, and I treasure it. It’s such a meditative fragrance.

Really. I might have to hunt down some older stuff just to see what it used to be. I so wanted a smoky, spicy rose.

Decided to try an untested sample I’ve had for ages – L’Artisan Fleur de Carrotte. It’s light and herby and fresh and will probably be gone in about 20 minutes. But it’s nice for now! Don’t really get any carrot, which is fine by me.

    SOTD = MPG Ambre Precieux

3 sprays today and it got me through the commute and the some.. There’s a yucky sewe-like odor in my building today and Ambre Preciuex is trumping it, thank goodness!

I left the house in a hurry today as I wanted to give myself extra time to drive to the train station. Silly me thought I could wake up at the same time and be done getting ready 10 minutes ahead of normal. Pfft. The result was that I forgot to wear earrings and I feel nekkid!

I’ve actually gone out and purchased earrings in the past just to get through the day! Such an odd feeling and can stand forgetting my watch more than forgetting earrings.

OMG, I hate forgetting to put on earrings. I always feel naked without them as well. I’ve had at least 2 holes in my ears since age 10 (current count is 6 (asymmetrical) and a cuff), and I just don’t feel like me without earrings.

Wearing Jour d`Hermes Absolu. It’s holding up quite for an Hermes – L’Ambre des Merveilles doesn’t get chomped by my skin either. I admire (ok, envy) the sunny-natured, scent-eating-skinned people here who can say, “Great, then I can try another perfume this afternoon!” Instead, I get cranky and want my money back…

I often get frustrated as well. I mean I’v spent all this $$$ on perfume and no one can smell it unless I stick my wrist right under their nose! But then I also go though stages where I just tire of anything very quickly and appreciate the fact that I can re-boot without too much trouble :) Also, very occasionally I will spray too much of something that is a bit too strong, and being strangled by ones own perfume is the very worst thing of all. What gets me envious is people saying things like ‘one spray and I got compliments all day long!’

I’m wearing PHI Une Rose de Kandahar from a sample. I like it, but honestly the drydown smells so much like Chergui on me that I don’t think I need to own it. I need to actually compare side-by-side to see if they’re as similar to me as I think they are.

Might have to sit this Friday out.. I had a sample of Aftelier Oud Luban, but I’ve either given it away already or I’ve misplaced it. Not sure what I did with it, but I can’t find it.

That’s so interesting regarding PHI’s drydown on you. It’s not like that on me at all. I did a wild 5 sprays of PHI this morning and so loving the drydown right now ;)

I’m enjoying it, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that I already own Chergui. I think my skin amps something that Tauer uses in his bases, though. In a lot of his perfumes, especially those with balsamic bases, the base tends to dominate and nearly drown out everything else. This one isn’t quite as bad on that score as some others I’ve tried, though. I think my favorite Tauer is Vetiver Dance for that reason.. it doesn’t have that thing.. kind of like Pixel’s relationship with Aftelier.

I could not find a sample of Borneo 1834 I wanted to wear this morning so I wore the rest of my Phi sample and I want a bottle. It is gorgeous! I get lots of tobacco and vanilla in the drydown and I find the Chergui so much less rich and fulsome, in comparison.

Oh, I really like Aftelier’s Oud Luban. I got to it at the end of trying out several samples of her scents… most of which weren’t working on me, it seems my skin just causes the ambergris she likes to explode like a mushroom cloud, I can hardly smell anything else :( but then I tried the oud luban… no ambergris! Lovely!

I liked it too, though oud isn’t my favorite. One of her others that I really loved (that unfortunately is discontinued) was Haute Claire. That one also didn’t use ambergris. It was a really gorgeous green floral with a base of vetiver and vanilla.

SOTD is the tiniest spritz of Angel Violette (my favorite Angel). It’s already lingered for hours w/o being overbearing, but at the rate I’m using this up there’ll be some left for my great-great-great-great granddaughter! Wish everything had such wonderful staying power . . .

Orange Sanguine is my only scent today. I had a dental appointment this morning. Nobody noticed (I think) that I was sniffing my wrists while blotting water off my face.

I couldn’t smell anything through the left side of my nose for a while. The dental work was on a left upper molar, and that side of my face was very numb. I guess half of my nose went to sleep for a bit, but it’s awake again, even though I can’t quite feel my cheek yet.

I’m in Shalimar Parfum Initial on this frigid day in NY. Robin, that Bronze Goddess cream must be delicious! By the time I got around to get some last summer, Bloomingdales had already sold out. I was able to get the shimmering body oil, maybe I should use that tomorrow :)

Tonight’s SOTN is my newly acquired Cuir d’Ange which after trying last week I became obsessed with. Fab!
A little PSA I heard from the store is that the prices will be going up next month, not sure if that applies to all their fragrances or just the travel set.

A lab on fire Paris LA as the sample was sitting next to my bangle and I was in a rush. I do love the fizzy ginger cola aspect especially as it was a day of running errands and school uniform shopping for my son!

Chiming in super late! I went with Kenzo Amour Le Parfum, from the gold bottle, today. I like the parfum version much better than the original; it’s deeper, warmer, and darker. It’s also a bit of a powerhouse – I dab this one on.
