Monday scent of the day 1/26

Posted by Robin on 26 January 2015 153 Comments

Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily

Yes, it's Monday again. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily, from the original limited edition version before it joined the Cologne Intense collection.

Reminder: this Friday, 1/30, will be Oud Friday! Wear an oud fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

EL Cinnabar (indeterminate vintage but not particularly new). Something spicy to combat the cold weather.

I used to think Cinnabar was a distant second to Opium (I mean, back in the eighties, before the reformulation bug hit and they were no longer recognizable) but Cinnabar is just a lot more wearable, I think. I’m not sorry to have run out of Opium years ago but I’m really glad I still have a couple of millilitres of Cinnabar extrait.

So no scent for me for the 3rd day and Im missing it!!
Looking forward to ouding it this week though! :)

So far, we do not have serious accumulation. Keeping my fingers crossed…the weather map shows us right on the border, could get 5 inches or could get a couple feet.

Miss Dior Le Parfum (2012). Haven’t worn it in a long time. I am enjoying it so far and I think I will be wearing it more this winter.
Honestly, Miss Dior has so much renewals/repromotes/flankers I have completely lost track. I seem to need to google whenever I see one. (Well, except for Miss Dior Original. Need it in EdP please. :) )

    SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga

I’m in the path of the forecasted epic storm. I decided to work from home rather than risk the nightmare commute home. I’m also preparing for a power outage just in case with flashlights in strategic places and food that can be eaten cold left closest to the refrigerator door so I only have to have it open a crack and grab them quickly. I’m also hoping to be able to do tomorrow’s work today in case I couldn’t log in tomorrow.

Haha – I know; it’s gotten a little ridiculous with this one this winter. I think it can qualify as a cheap thrill – twenty bucks for a bottle in some places. In the cold months, I keep reaching for the scents with a certain amount of plumminess (this and Feminite du Bois) and or the aforementioned sandalwoods, but I’m starting to have a bit of a Cuir de Lancome thing too. That was SUCH a good blind buy, as everyone said it would be.

Have you ever had one you couldn’t stop reaching for?

Sweet, fresh blackberries (my favorite berry to eat and as a fragrance note), soft vanilla and a light touch of musk (I’m not a big musk fan), it’s my favorite blackberry scent. Simple and sweet, but not cloyingly so, you can smell the quality in this and it lasts all day on me. i’ve had my bottle for a long time but I only wear it in winter when I find it comforting yet playful. Yours sounds delightful!

Yes, Man Magnet Monday, lol! Just in time for Valentine’s season. I enjoyed a yummy vanilla perfume oil from a local bath shop. It got me compliments everywhere, from man, woman, and child! Of course that particular scent is discontinued :(

Back to the Vanilla and Blackberry Musk, I’ve heard from many that it does smell attractive to men, and that it is close to Philosophy’s Falling In Love. :)

Y’all should come to Texas. I’m in AG Duel today and quite enjoying smelling like expensive linen spray (don’t know why I always think of pretentious gift shoppe circa 2001 when I wear it, but I do).
I’m not being smug about the weather, really I’m not, but it’s suoopsed to be in the mid-seventies all week here and I have a ton of inside bookkeeping type work that must be done today. The cat is driving me insane wanting me to take him out in the yard so maybe I’ll rake leaves or mow later, that would be enough of a chore that I wouldn’t feel terribly guilty.

I let him wander. When he was a kitten I leashed him but he’s old enough that he tends to stick fairly close to home these days and the new yard is still pretty scary. Both neighbors have been made aware that he will be visiting and are cool with it and there’s nobody behind us. Right now he’s anxious to investigate the rabbit warren under the shed.

We’re getting our floors and kitchen renovated, so we spent all day yesterday cleaning and then had to pack up our kitties and take them to my parents’ house. Aside from going a whole week without the cats (which is making me sad), we’re also going to spend the week moving boxes from room to room and eating takeout.

So I think this week is probably going to be all comforting, sweet scents. I’m wearing Eau des Missions at the moment, which feels pretty perfect for today.

We have lived without our kitchen since January 2d. Still not put back together. Refrig in living room; stove in hallway; no running water in there. New cabinets came in last week; granite is “supposed to be” installed this Friday, but who knows. Boxes and boxes of kitchen stuff stacked everywhere.

Thank you, Perthgirl. Everyone warned me, and I thought I’d gotten myself talked into not caring that we were going to essentially be camping, but I’m finding it very wearing at this point. “Cooking” outside on the grill and washing dishes in the laundry tub are not romantic activities. Then there is the fear that the choices I made won’t look good once installed.

I’m in Texas too, so its going to be sunny and in the 60s and 70s for highs most of the week. I grabbed one of the samples that I ended up with over the holidays – Bvlgari Omnia Coral. Fruity floral that is already gone. I’m trying to go through my samples, so maybe I’ll hit Caron or Annick Goutal tomorrow.

Ooh how nice to see another oud-lover! It would seem from comments on postings of ouds that the community in general is rather ‘boo! Hiss!’ toward then, so I feel a bit protective toward them. I think oud is simply delicious! :)

Here at Keep It Simple Monday I have on Private Collection Jasmine White Moss — it became my Cristalle replacement when reformulation happened to the latter. I just heard at Holts that JWM is being discontinued, as I bought their last bottle…

My SOTD is Ding Ding 5 by Opus Oils. On me, it’s orange and sweet, peppery, but mellow sandalwood. The sandalwood reminds me of a wearable (for me, anyway) version of the sandalwood in Nirvana Black. I really wanted to like Nirvana Black, but after a few fleeting seconds of weak violet, it was all acrid sandalwood … like acrid armpits :-(

Today I tried Acqua Allegoria Limón Verde. It’s so bad it hurts, but I have to say it does smell a bit like caipirinhas. Cheap cachaça caipirinhas, but still. Anyway, I sprayed O de Lancome on the other wrist for the sake of comparison, and its superiority to the Guerlain was so obvious, specially in the dry down, that I felt a bit sad.

I think I’ve tried Limon Verder once and found it rather sharp and thin. My favourite Aqua Allegoria is still the wonderful Pamplelune.

Sharp and thin, that’s it. With a note evoking the kind of caipirinha you get at over crowded beaches. Ugh. I so wanted to love Pamplelune, but it makes me feel like I haven’t showered in a week.

Courts are still open! Argh. Hoping we’ll get out of here before the standard 4:30pm. Very cold out especially with the wind, and snowing much heavier now.

I did manage, however, to make my way to Elizabeth St and sample the new Atelier scent and was given a couple of samples to take with me.
I also bought a new fig scent they have (there are 4 new scents coming out). It’s a 7.5ml spray, just the size I like ’em!
I also popped over to Diptyque and tried their new Plumeria scent.. meh.
Overall a successful and satisfying lunch break :)

I find it to be sweet and a very realistic grapefruit. I didn’t try on skin yet, but on blotter it made my mouth water. Grapefruit is not a note I typically like but this one might win me over.

Myrrhe Imperiale. A sample. I just love it! My skin seems to draw the vanilla note out of everything and I don’t care for vanilla all that much. It is in there, but plays second fiddle to all the dark good stuff. I will have to get a paper route to afford this one.

It’s unseasonably warm here in Portland (and no snow to ski on) so I am trying to conjure some winter with Slumberhouse Norne, a pine and fir forest in a bottle. I heard that the formulation was tweaked a bit (it doesn’t stain your clothes or cause your wrists to stick to keyboards anymore) but my bottle is older and so I am happily picking lint and dog hair off my wrists in exchange for the extraordinary smell.

Now now, no complaining about early spring here in Portland … even if it does probably mean we’ll relapse into serious winter in the middle of March. ;) It was so beautiful yesterday that I spent two hours outside in the yard, cutting the dead poufs off the hydrangeas, clearing mushy-stringy old leaves from the lilies, and finding new growth on just about everything. SOTD is Cuir Mauresque, a new favorite.

That’s actually from the FDA. It seems that in the USA absinthe must be thujone-free so maybe this is a regulation against false advertising ;)(thujone is the compound held responsible for absinthe’s alleged psychedelic effect).

It’s available but no longer contains any of the interesting stuff, as you found out :) im not sure it contains wormwood in any way now. I suspect it probably used to be bitterer than it is now, hence pouring it over a sugar cube.
