Monday scent of the day 1/19

Posted by Robin on 19 January 2015 188 Comments

Caron powder puff

Monday again! If you've dragged yourself out of bed already, do tell us what fragrance you're wearing today?

I'm wearing the discontinued citrus chypre Caron Alpona. My sample is past its prime, but it still smells pretty darned good.

Reminder: this Friday, 1/23, will be Layered Friday: layer two or more fragrances, or layer fragrance(s) with a scented body product.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Nobody up but me? I have to work today, and wanted something refreshing and soothing, so Escale a Portofino is my SOTD. Happy Monday, everyone!

I thought they’d do more of the Escale series…

Blind bought Escale a Potofino for a ridiculously cheap price. At first wearing it was a “meh,” but by the third wearing it was a love. I too find it refreshing, relaxing and, as tejas says, pretty.

I made a special note of going out to go try something from the Bvlgari le gemme collection. I decided to try Noorah. It’s nice, although I don’t love it. However I was tempted to buy one of the perfumes from this collection just because of the wonderful bottles, but common sense got the best of me.

Even though my first crocuses are in bloom it feels very gloomy outside. I’m wearing one of my older friends, Heure Exquise, and can also smell some remains of Mon Parfum Chéri from yesterday on my cardigan. They blend quite well together.

Also meant to mention that the Caron goose down puff is the ultimate in luxury. I held one on the palm of my hand and it weighs like just the meerest hint of air. I almost switched my make-up routine to have an excuse to buy one of them.

I put on some Heure Exquise on Saturday to ward off the winter blues during the evening when I was just lounging around (after my daughter went to bed). It was just so lovely. And then I could still smell a bit of it on my shawl the next day. I can’t wait for spring! There is no house that combines the art of perfumery with evocative reflections of nature like Goutal!

No 19 gets right to the point and stays focused! I wear No 19 much more than HE too, even though HE was my gateway green, etc. It has more of a mood to it, and sets me off on dreamy passages.

SOTD is Bois Naufrage. I’m tired of my winter perfumes lately. Uh oh–it’s only mid January. Long way to go yet. I wore Bois Naufrage all last spring, a salty fig that smells like the great outdoors! That’s what I needed today.

Vintage Mitsouko extrait. I got a small decant a few years ago, I’m down to the last couple of drops, and it’s official: I like the jangly, ferocious EDT more than the rich plush parfum. But at least now I know!

The recent iterations of parfum are DEFINITELY dumbed down: I smelled one four years ago at the Guerlain boutique in Toronto and was massively disappointed (and for all I know it’s even less interesting now, since there’s no reason to assume that Guerlain is not forever revising and reformulating).

My EDT is at least 10 years old, maybe older, still ancient enough to have plenty of oakmoss, and it is thrilling. The vintage parfum is beautiful, yes, but not exciting.

It’s the third time I come across this perfume: first I mentioned it myself in a reply to one of the comments on my blog (it was in a context of straight-forward amber scent); then I got it in the newsletter from Serge Lutens (they chose to showcase this exact perfume in the e-mail) and now here. I should probably consider wearing it today too :)

I normally have very good longevity from tuberose, but Moon Bloom did a flit after two hours. I don’t know why.

I was dabbing, but I dabbed generously, until I had an area the size of a quarter soaking wet on my wrist.

CdG Kyoto because I just ordered a bunch of tiny decants (didn’t I just pledge to stop doing decants for evaporation reasons?) and realized I hadn’t drained all of my samples. I really like Kyoto and should probably just buy a bottle but then I start thinking that I love Avignon too and could really do with Zagorsk…and I buy more samples so I can pick my favorite. I really wish they would do a travel set of these or a set of minis. I’m not going to sucker for the full sized set.

They have that CDG hyper-real thing going for them that I have to be in the mood for but they are just so good, just when I think I’m bored with them I get a craving. They can be a bit chilly and depthless when compared to some of my other favorites but sometimes I want a scrubbed, bare bones, literal interpretation of incense and they are perfect. Hinoki makes me feel like I’ve just stepped out of a hot bath onto a well scrubbed clean deck on a cool misty morning.

A beautiful day in Coastal Virginia, after the rain of yesterday comes the dry out. Used up my entire bottle of 7 ml Marni over the weekend, honestly just to get it done. It is nice enough on my skin but I am not passionately loving it! Also, the longevity leaves a lot to be desired. So today? I just have not decided yet………

I don’t know what I’m wearing. I got an unlabeled decant in a swap and decided to try it. Surprisingly maddening not to know what it is! It smells familiar-ish but I don’t know if I’ve tried it before or it’s just a familiar structure. I’m getting saffron, powder, some citrus?

It was cold and sunny today. In other words – perfect Carnal Flower weather! I swear, this stuff is almost magical when wafting in frosty air. I can’t wait to get paid so that I can finally get a 10 ml spray of it as a little Valentine’s treat.

OH MAN I love Carnal Flower in that kind of weather. I agree, it’s magic – the first time I tested it was on a cold clear day after snow. It was SO COLD here that breath practically turned into a shower of ice in the air, and I had to go pick up The CEO on a remote part of the farm when he was having tractor trouble, and I had to drive the farm truck that was missing its back window so it was freaking freezing… but I smelled so so good it was like a fairy wonderland outside.

Wearing Karl Lagerfeld Chloe parfum again. This is The Smell of Me, ca. 1986, and it’s either hopelessly dated or a timeless classic.

I’ll argue for timeless classic. I managed to find some of the Lagerfeld version for my sister whi had it as a signature scent for years. Have to say, I was very tempted to keep it for myself.
By the way, I didn’t see the Chloe listed in your tuberose post.

You know, it was on the original list on my laptop, but maybe it disappeared when I formatted the Word doc for WordPress – WP won’t accept any previous formatting, and I wind up going into the doc and changing font colors and so on. I might have accidentally deleted a line. Thanks for the pointer.

I was forbidden to wear my younger sister’s signature scents (first cKOne, then Dune, then some lavender-vanilla thing I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole because of my lavender headache issues).

Yesterday I tested Guerlain L’Heure Bleue. I want to put it on again now. I was not expecting to enjoy it that much, since Mitsouko was a bit musty on me. But I really loved L’Heure Bleue. Vanilla, not too sweet, with vintage embellishments. I don’t know yet if I need an FB or if a decant will do. I wish the cute Guerlain bottle was available in a smaller size.

SOTD PHI Un Rose du Khandahar. I loved it this morning. Small dab from a sample has faded away at noon to faint musky incense on my wrist. Is it not lasty? Do I need a more generous application?

Of all the samples I’ve tried over the last three months, Scent of Hope, Wisteria Hysteria and Séville à l’Aube are standouts, with Oriza L Legrand Marrion-Nous a close runnerup. Seems that flowers and amber are what I am liking…

    SOTD = Dior Cuir Cannage

… from a largish decant. I erased Eau no Scent and wore this for my afternoon / evening. Now I’m off to do MY errands and I will do so as Cuir Cannage develops. I’m in the camphorated portion of the episode right now and it is morphing into its sweet phase. It’s definitely not a quiet scent and is a no-no around scent phobe family members. The overall effect is like living in the cocoon of a giant leather handbag that is not too overpoweringly leatherish.

I went to Nieman Marcus and spritzed on 4 sprays of VCA California Reverie. It’s so very pleasant, but it’s been 3 hours maybe and I can barely smell it (and 4 sprays is a LOT LOT LOT for me). It’s so pretty maybe it’s worth a bottle anyways. I could probably drain a whole bottle with the number of sprays I need! (the other arm has Orchidee Vanille, which is also lovely!)

These two sound like candidates for Splitmeet. I already have a FB of Orchidee Vanille but would want to get to know California Reverie better. I think I was the victim of a less than ideal sample container (the SA was nice but the only container he could find was one of those screw top translucent plastic containers that normally hold liquid cosmetics samples. I think the plastic contaminated the perfume so it was not love at first sniff for me but it showed promise!

SOTD is my new bottle of Lavandula; shout-out to Merlin for the encouragement to wear new bottles right away lest your tastes change while you’ve got them hoarded. (The perfume version of the squirrel who forgets where he’s buried his harvest.)

The scent is great–manages to feel soft (sometimes lavender can be a little too spiky for me–I appreciate the shade of vanilla taking the edge off) but still “natural”, i.e. it doesn’t smell like disinfectant. One yoga studio I go to spritzes everyone with a lavender “aromatherapy” during savasana, and I swear they might as well be spraying us down with lavender-scented Lysol. (I guess that’s one way to keep mats germ-free, but I’d rather not have it on my face!!)

Luckily they do usually say you can give a hand signal if you’d prefer to be skipped, although sometimes the teacher has already sprayed half the room before she remembers to mention this. The other thing is that this particular class happens at a very popular time, so the room is mat-to-mat–if your neighbors get sprayed, in effect you get sprayed too. Oh well. Straight to the shower afterward for me in any event!

It’s summer here in melbourne and warm and sunny here today and it works really well. I’m not describing it really well but it manages to have a freshness along with the vanilla/wood and it sits close to the skin which makes it easy to wear. Makes a nice change from citrus in the heat!

I really enjoy wearing this. Now that I’ve had it on all day it’s reminding me of a sandalwood solid I purchased about a year ago. I’ll have to dig it out of my swim bag (it was my end of the day post swim scent – digging it out of my bag reminds me of how long it’s been since I’ve been swimming – maybe I should make a belated NYs resolution to get myself back in the pool!). I wonder if it really smells alike in the dry down, or if my memory is playing tricks on me.

Okay, just tried my solid – a sweet sandalwood. Nothing like TF Santal Blush, but still the perfect post swim balm.

My SOTD is Prada Candy, one of my favorites. Had a wonderful day off and enjoyed going to the movies, having delicious brisket, and snuggling up to hot cocoa with my special someone.

It’s a horrible wet and snowy and dark morning in Stockholm. I’m wearing Ysl In love again, hoping it will give a feeling of spring.
