Thursday scent of the day 1/8

Posted by Robin on 8 January 2015 144 Comments

marshmallows

It's Elvis Presley's birthday! (If you're in Memphis, you can go to the Elvis Birthday Dance Party at the Holiday Inn.) What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I'm wearing Parfums de Nicolaï Kiss Me Tender.

Reminder: this Friday, 1/9, is Foody Friday: wear a gourmand or foody fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Great choice for Elvis Robin! :)
Today is another day off work, so again some extra time for perfume wearing..
#1 Iris Poudre (deciding on which travel bottles I’ll get)
#2 Gucci Rush. Because im not really comfortable wearing it in public
#3 Iris Silver Mist. Just because.

I wish I could say it was on purpose! But I’d actually picked the fragrance and the image before I found out it was his birthday. So, serendipity.

Maybe it’s just because I am still enamored with Iris Poudre, but I think it is pretty amazing for a perfume to please so many perfumistas yet get complements from regular people, that works in all seasons, and has that cool yet cozy characteristics. Definitely worth a travel bottle ;)

I shopped my stash this morning and decided to go with something light-ish. I’m wearing Gold Leather by Atelier. It’ll probably be gone in two hours time on me because Atelier colognes never last on me, but I’m liking how airy it is for a leather scent. For some reason it fits with the bitter cold we’re having today. Drove to work in 6F weather. Took half the commute time (hour) for the car to warm up.

I think you may live around the same area I do (PA) and if so, I can tell you: DON”T GO OUTSIDE. I’ve had to run a few errands for the office today and each time I’ve been freezing! It’s so cold (and my car is old) I have to let my car warm up a minute before I leave.

I didn’t listen — I went out. It is freaking cold. I don’t like to do it, but I let my car warm up for 10 minutes while I came back inside.

Oh – the cold! You could feel it rip the air out of the lungs last night… overnight I thought the house would blow away with the horrid wind chills! This morning, the car was groaning. I am so happy it’s finally 11 degrees AND NO WIND! Thank god for small miracles. At least the sun is shining and I’m not shoveling.

Oh Jenkr, I just discovered Gold Leather this year and it is total love for me! If it weren’t quite so expensive I’d have bought it without a second though… but my birthday is coming up so we’ll see, hehe. :) The spicy jammy note on top of the airy woodsy leather is just fabulous. It was probably of the more fun scents I’ve blogged about too. I wish I was wearing it right now…

But man, it sounds like it is even colder in PA than it is in MD…. brrr.

Gold Leather is a nice one, but I wouldn’t buy a bottle because it doesn’t last long on me at all. I smell it more on my clothes than my wrists. Despite what Atelier claims about their perfume-strength cologne, they never last very long on me.
GL is wonderful though and really what I needed for the day :)

I’m wearing Brin de Réglisse. Yesterday I wondered why I almost never wear it, and as I was scrambling around to find the decant this morning I realized that one reason is I can never find it. Must get organized. But it was worth the search.

I’m wearing SSS Rose Voluptué. I’ve only just gotten interested in rose, and this may not be my perfect rose (if I’m totally honest with myself, I think my perfect rose actually smells like dessert), but it’s certainly satisfying my craving for flowers at the moment.

Natori for me today, as it just seems to be what I’m obsessed with at the moment. It’s either sandalwood (Tam Dao, Nirvana Black) or plummy, warm goodness (Feminite du Bois, Natori) in this weather for me, it seems. You’d think I’d reach for ambers too, but not as much.

Really looking forward to our upcoming New York swap meet, generously hosted by Missionista. Meeting fellow fumies in person is just so nice, and I learn a lot each time. I’ve decided that the bottle of Agent Provocateur I bought will be offered up, and the Bill Blass Nude as well. Both well done, but just not my taste, and I’d love to find them a happy home.

    Stay warm and well, y’all!

Glad you posted about this! ALL people in NYC and environs are welcome to come. We have 5 people currently planning to attend, and have space for another 3-5 people. I have some Matin D’Orage that was given to me as a freebie, and I am giving away samples to anyone who shows up (and wants it)–share the wealth! There will be fun things to sniff, and wine/cheese/veg/salami/crackers etc.

hello there Ladies! I envy you with your NY swap meet! I wish we have something like that in T.O. (Toronto:). I seems there are many fellow Canadians commenting here though… so, may be something lkke that is in the future (talking about 2015 resolutions :).

In regards to SOTD I’m wearing the same juice I’ve decided to wear tomorrow, so no surprise here! It’s MdO Vanilla. I think its the best vanilla, it’s so green, rich & warm at the same time, which I love. It’s endless also.
Owning a couple of MdO ( including a good decant of Oud) I suspect she has (or, sadly, she had) a signature which is quite discernible in all, or, at least, in all what I’m happy to own, of her line.
I wonder what you, Ladies, think of that.

Also – I haven’t really spent time with Mona di Orio’s works, and I’ll have to fix that. They sound gorgeous.

Thanks so much for invitation. May be later this year, when a trip to Nt won’t look like apolar expedition, but I’ll keep my eye on your group, or sure :).
ihadanidea: if you’d like to try some but have none, pls let me know and we’ll think of something. Just let me know which one you’d like to sample, and, if I have one I will fix you a vial. Just one little thing: this would be my first parcel of that kind: never send any samples yet, only received :P. SO I need to procure new vials first .

It has been very cold lately, which means that I have finally been able to wear big cozy sweaters :D Today, I pulled out my Icelandic wool sweater, which is super warm so I can only wear it on really cold days! Apparently, last time I wore it (last winter …) I also wore Timbuktu and there was a hint of it remaining so I just decided to roll with it and happily applied Timbuktu for the second day in a row. I guess I am nothing if not consistent.

Tabac Blond extrait, a sample, vintage unknown: the top and middle are really extravagant, leathery-mossy and expensive-smelling, what we would expect of a vintage Caron, but the base kind of goes to hell, so I don’t know, maybe the eighties? Not modern, that’s for sure.

I’m wearing Imaginary Authors Violet Disguise. I think this is a pretty weird little perfume. I can never quite decide if I really love it. Sometimes when I first put it on, I’m not even sure if I really *like* it. But then in a few minutes I’m like, oh yes, I like this quite a bit… Then I don’t wear it for months, think about swapping it, then put it on again…

I’m in Cuir d’Iris by Parfumerie Generale. I obtained the sample in NYC while out & about with thegoddessrena. I like iris, I like leather, but this does not work on me. The iris is really dusty and the leather is SHARP, and the combined effect to my nose reminds me of ashy sheep’s milk cheese.

On our joint commute into work this morning, I mentioned to my husband that I was trying something new and he said, “oh, is _that_ what the animal smell is.” (Gee, honey, maybe mention that before we leave the house next time…).

Fortunately, my 3 sprays have almost completely worn off already!

I’m at home in the -20C weather (insert hysterical laughter here), so I think I will spend the day picking at samples as I work. I’ve got piles of randoms from the grab bags at Surrender to Chance.

I will probably revisit Keiko Mecheri’s Johana and MFK’s Absolue pour le Soir and the rest will be random dabs of whatever :)

Boyfriend LOVED last night’s Terracotta La Parfum, which I never would have expected if he hadn’t shown me his new ylang ylang candle. I brought over my discovery set of L’Artisan (10 2ml vials) for smelling fun because apparently we are both huge nerds! Fun to see someone else reacting to scents, which has largely been a personal experiment for me until now. He said Fou d’Absinthe reminded him of something he used to wear that came in an orange bottle but he had no idea what it was called – wonder what it could have been! :)

Wearing Celtic Fire again today. I applied lavishly (from a rollerball), and while I can still smell it, that Icelandic wool sweater is tamping it down nicely. It’s not at all overpowering. However, it’s not quite as warming as I’d hoped. Then again, I’m not sure the celts ever had to contend with weather this cold. :)

Burberry Body again. The usual single spray! In my new work situation, and i share an office with another person, so being as conservative as i can until i figure out if anyone is sensitive ti scent.

Fingers crossed it all works out in my favor!

Hi we’ve had a bit of a sad day in France – I’m not French but the newspapers and the TV have been very grim. It has been amazing to watch the people in big cities turn out to show strength and support though. Anyway I’ve sprayed on Ambre Fetiche but I’ve realised I must have a bit of a cold as I can hardly smell it and I usually have no problem smelling it. I’m a bit miffed.

When I first got to this post all I could see was the image and not which fragrance you were wearing, Robin… all the same, I guessed right. Perfect for KMT!

I’ve got Houbigant’s Orangers en Fleurs brightening my day today. It’s OB-centric, of course, so it’s a bit soapy on me, but not oppressively so.

Today is a true Throwback Thursday!
I am wearing the very first scent that I ever bought, from the very bottle: Antaeus.
The 50 ml splash bottle is now 29 yrs old and the scent is exactly as I remember it. It doesn’t feel tired, off, and none of the notes seem to be missing. It has kept so well that I am amazed and instantly taken back to my college years.
Last year, i bought a new bottle of Antaeus. The scent in that new bottle has the same “feel” as my vintage Antaeus, but the head notes are a bit weird– like the fragrance needs time before it can focus on what it’s supposed to be. The power of the new version is also like that of a toothless lion. The vintage version roars! I will continue to save the remains of my vintage bottle for those special days.

Nice story, Plat, and I like the idea of Throwback Thursday. I may add it as a theme along with Keep-it-Simple Monday. And I, too, have experienced the same with vintage and new bottles of the same scents – Time mellows and ‘betters’, just as with people and fine wine!

    SOTD = VC&A Bois d’Iris

I recall wanting to wear this a month ago and couldn’t recall why I didn’t. The mystery was solved today – my decant has a wonky atomizer! I eked out a few paltry sprays to not go naked and wowee, even the little sprays added to this wonderful warmth that is so appropriate for this cold cold day in NYC. This is FB-worthy for sure and the 45 mL bottles sure look attractive (I think they’re 45 mLs).

Elvis! How about Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass? It always disappointed me because I expected it to smell like cool dewey grass. However, if you think of it as smelling like 1950s teenagers at an Elvis concert – soap scrubbed skin, cologne, and the sweat of Dionysian frenzy – it smells just right.

I was just reading a wonderful post on Bois de Jasmin, “Coming of Age: An American Perfume Story,” and learned something I’d never thought about. Of the big three who revolutionized the American cosmetics and perfume industry – Elizabeth Arden, Helena Rubinstein, and Estée Lauder – only Lauder was born in America.

Started off the day with Vanilla Bourbon Intense, got to leave work early and went to Sphora and sampled Infusion d’Iris Absolute, which is great, and Chanel 5 Eau Premiere which disappeared on my skin in like 10 minutes! So then I put on Chanel 5 EDP, (which I wore as my signature for years.)
Sniffing the backs of my hands, the Iris is winning now, tho.
So then I went to the cute doodads store to get some Lepi de Provence Sandlewood and Cedar bath soap, (my favorite) and they had Library of Flowers True Vanilla 50% off so I got some of that. Now I need a shower to wah off all the other stuff and I will wear True Vanilla as SOTE.
Whew! What a day so far…

Dug up an untested sample of a classic – Chanel no. 19. It is the modern EDT, and it does nothing for me. :( I used up almost all of the 1ml sample and it didn’t smell like much this morning. Kind of wan and bitter with minimal sillage. Nearing the end of my work day, it smells like an echo of something quite plush and lovely… detectable only if I mash my wrist to my nose.

I have changed my perfume three times today, something is happening, maybe it’s the cold, they keep disappearing , first I put on Chanel No.5 perfume and then it was gone , I applied Timbuktu and it is gone too, now I am wearing a layering combo Youth Dew bath oil layered with Coco Mademoiselle extrait. It is surprisingly good.

Today I’m trying the Vanille Absolument that I received in my first swap. It’s warm and its not to cloying or suffocating like some vanillas, but ø¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ckv “““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““““88888888 (my cat decided to share his thoughts as well)
but, there’s an anise or black licorice note that’s killing me. Sadly I’ll have to swap this one too!

I did grab a sample of My Burburry and a violet Gucci today though, so if this wears off (probably won’t) I’ll try one of them. :)

Today started out as a bad day – kids home from school due to frigid temps, work piled up even after working an extra 6 hours last night… I sprayed on Volnay Brume d’Hiver from an old Olfactif sampler and it just made me smile and I managed to slog through and am happy to realize the worst of the deadlines have passed and kids are back at school tomorrow!! Had a lovely shower with some Lush Rose Jam and am warm and snuggly with the pups. Shewwwwww. Now for the SOTE…hmmm… Likely Coromandel and some Project Runway! Enjoy your night!

Today was a bit warmer, I think it got to 29. So I sprayed on some Bronze Goddess. My co workers were a bit confused. I also wore my newly purchased snowskirt. This thing is amazing, I just wish I’d thought of it.

The snowskirt is an insulated, zip on skirt. Put it on over your clothes and your legs and rear end stay nice and toasty. Tres chic for the Alaska fashionista,

Started the day with Amaranthine, ended it with A*Men Pure Coffee. I’ve been on the lookout for a coffee scent that’s deep, dark and delicious, lightened ever so slightly with an interesting non-gourmand note. I’d welcome any suggestions for good coffee-centric scents!
