Monday scent of the day 11/24

Posted by Robin on 24 November 2014 92 Comments

Traditional Medicinals tea

Another week starts...what's your fragrance today?

I'm commando. I might be coming down with something.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/28 (Black Friday!) will be Cheap Thrills Friday. Wear something that costs $50 or below, double bonus points if it costs $25 or below. No points for wearing something expensive that you bought cheaply via a sample or decant or somesuch! We're trying to find real bargains here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hope you feel better soon, Robin. There’s nothing worse than being sick during the holidays.
My SOTD is my signature scent, Nectarine Blossom and Honey by Jo Malone.

I love doing Thanksgiving “early.” It takes the pressure off the holiday and stretches out the fun.

I always go for eau de cologne or lavender when I’m feeling blah. Take care!

I’m sorry you are not feeling well, hope you are better by Thursday. I know I’m crazy, but I wear perfume even if I’m sick (usually Caron Pour Un Homme, I find it very comforting). Today I am wearing Esprit d’Oscar, very pretty.

Yay! for Pour un Homme. I love the lavender. Sometimes I want to spritz it all day long just for that lovely top note.

Very similar but darker and with perhaps more of an intense licorice sweetness in the beginning; the top notes are just incredible and I almost prefer it on paper or fabric or just in the air to on my skin.

    Get better soon!

In the morning I tried some vintage Balenciaga Le Dix, perfume concentration according to the bottle. I got it reasonably cheap from That Big Auction Site, but I had to get my DH to help me pry the stopper out (he used a pair of polygrip pliers). The top notes felt a bit off and I didn’t get much violet, but the base notes were very smooth and rich, almost thick. Very enjoyable.

Anyone have a clue how to date Le Dix?

Now I am off into the world and need something a bit more pushy. L’Occitane Labdanum de Seville fits the bill perfectly. Happy Monday everyone!

Can’t help with the dating of Le Dix, but I have a mini of the perfume concentration that’s probably at least 20 years old and it still smells wonderful. Its what introduced me to my love of violet scents, and still remains my favorite violet. I have a later spray edt I purchased, which is nice but not as wonderful as the perfume – just a dab or two does it for me.

    SOTD was Terracotta Le Parfum
SOTN Caron Violette Precieuse. I find this really calming and cooling in the same way as Dzongkha. It smells of damp, cool earth and violet. Not sweet at all. More like a cold and damp early spring morning.

Ugh, I hope you’re not getting what’s been going around here! Feel better before the holiday.

I’m wearing a sample of Phi Une Rose de Kandahar. I wore a tiny dab yesterday and really liked it, I applied it a bit more heavily this morning and am waiting to see if whatever it is in the base of some Tauers that often doesn’t work for me shows up… but so far not!

Feel better, Robin! Today I’m wearing Dior New Look 1947. I’ve worn it a few times now, and the first time I tried it I was really disappointed. I thought it would be more like Lipstick Rose or something really glamorous. It is really mellow, but now that I’ve gotten over the fact it’s not what I expected, it’s really grown on me. Especially as a sort of subtle winter floral scent. It has a nice warmth to it, and really is a lovely fragrance.

I’m in Caron Coup de Fouet. It’s a grey, about-to-rain day and I was in the mood for that sharp, jittery peppercorn-and-carnation buzz. This might be in my top 10 all-time favourites, now that I think about it.

Allergy season has officially hit here. We had three cancellations from patients with sinus infections and two with laryngitis but I’m not sick yet, just tired from moving the sofa upstairs and other move related soreness. We have some really big heavy furniture as my husband is a woodworker and he and I opted to move it ourselves. The exhaustion is worth it to me, listening to him rant if someone else had damaged his creations would be much worse 😉
Since we’re not completely moved out yet and have an agent breathing down our necks about showing the place, I’m still totally stressed. We still have to pack up the garage and plants so one more big moving weekend will happen in December. I’ll keep everyone updated on the saga whether y’all like it or not.

PA is having some ridiculously weird weather this week! 70s today and then a chance of snow in a huge storm on Wednesday night?! Ugh. I’m on the cusp of the snow/mix line so I’m hoping it’ll be more in the mix-rain by then. So not ready (read wanting) snow this year after the hellaciously cold one we had last year.

If I leave the house w/out make-up on, no worries.
But, I will turn my car completely around and go back home if I forget to put on fragrance. For me, its like forgetting to put on an article of clothing! I have learned, though, to always keep samples in my purse and also in my desk at work.

Robin, and anyone else under the weather, feel better soon!

Ugly, ugly day here, temperatures already plummeting, cold rain has already turned to snow. I’m abandoning my usual Keep-It-Simple Monday theme, needed something with oomph to get me jumpstarted on Thanksgiving prep rather than pulling the covers over my head. SOTD is the original Givenchy Hot Couture edp (I believe it’s now called Hot Couture Collection No. 1) and this definitely has oomph! Raspberry-peppery-woody-smoky-oomph and deliciousness! Just like the original Organza Indecence, I fell head over heads in love with this scent the first time I tried it and still love it; luckily I have a backup bottle and a mini or two of the original formula. And, just like the original OI, Hot Couture’s reissue and various flankers don’t hold a candle to the original scent IMO, neither does its now boring bottle. Yes, that original Art Deco bottle does have a tendency to tip, but it looks awesome on my 1930’s vanity!

Inspired by Angela’s review, I’ll wear Knot today. I totally agree that this is a very nice dept store fragrance, and I got myself a mini off eBay (which is exactly how much of it I need). Not that I know that much about Bottega Veneta (have one secondhand purse), but it seems to me that, in comparison to prior fragrances, Knot somehow matches the brand most accurately.

I am guessing that Knot would work alright even when one feels sick, but Echinacea probably works better …

I don’t think your cats (or whoever is working on your wishlist) should have hard time with this one as it seems that they already have a variety of Knot things (creams, body lotions …) to assemble gift sets.

      Meredifay,

That particular JM fragrance is a bit masculine IMO. I bought this for my ex-boyfriend years ago and it smelled terrific on him. I think it is meant to be worn by either gender, but leans more towards the masculine side.

My SOTD is Wild Violets Body and Room Spray by Antique Pansies Soap Company. I think that I got in in a gift shop in Oregon during a Lewis and Clark road trip with my husband.

I sprayed it all over myself and then got dressed while it was still wet, thus ensuring that the scent would stay with me all day. It is not very sweet, but it does remind me of violet candies. It is also green and slightly soapy. By soapy, I mean that I smell like I just bathed with a bar of violet soap. I keep sticking my nose down my shirt to smell myself. Good thing no on ever visits my cubicle! 🙂

Ooh, Wild Violets sounds nice. Between that and Le Dix mentioned above, I feel a violet craving coming on . . .

I see that STC has the EDT and parfum versions of Le Dix. I think that my next batch samples will be violet-themed 🙂

SOTD is Burberry Brit Rhythm for Women from a carded sample, and I’m quite enjoying the pink pepper in it. It’s not complex, but very wearable I think. Better than I expected.

    Get better soon, Robin.

It’s getting colder outside, the wind is picking up and baby and I are fighting off yet another cold, so I went for one of my “soft fuzzy blanket” perfumes and wore NR for Her edp. It doesn’t seem like a sillage monster on me yet lingers gently for hours, and is just so cozy, soft and pretty that I love being wrapped up in it on difficult days.

I heard part of a fragrance-related program on NPR tonight. I think it was an interview on Marketplace by Kai Ryssdal, but I missed the opening and can’t find it on the website. Maybe it will show up tomorow?

They were talking about Macy’s reinventing itself to attract millennials, and the role that fragrance launches by Justin Bieber, Rihanna, etc., have played in creating excitement and getting millennials in the door.

If anyone else heard this and can remember more, please enlighten!

nozknoz, they didn’t say much more about fragrances than what you reported (they mentioned celebrity fragrances as a part of the discussion on Black Friday and how to get young consumers).

By the way, Kai was clearly nonplussed (in the original sense) at the idea of a Justin Bieber perfume. 🙂

CB I Hate Perfume’s Winter 1972. It’s awesome, but it smells more like salt air, or when you’re underwater in a lake or an ocean. Very natural, but I’m just not getting winter from it.

Also, the Frederic Malls coffrets ARE officially back on the Barney’s website! Both men and women’s! I’m going to post this again tomorrow early because I know a few ppl were asking about it. It’s not in my budget, but gosh, I wish it was! 🙂
