Happy Tuesday, and Happy Veteran's Day (with a shout out to my Dad, who doesn't read here and who is almost certainly not wearing any fragrance).
What fragrance are you wearing? And if you're a veteran or if you'd like to tell us about a veteran in your family, do add that too.
I'm wearing a tiny dab of Thierry Mugler Alien. I hadn't tried it in ages, but nope, still don't like it.
Reminder: this Friday, 11/14, is L'Effet Angel Friday: wear Thierry Mugler Angel, an Angel flanker or spawn of Angel (i.e. something influenced by Angel), with partial credit for wearing another Mugler fragrance.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
SOTD is Shazam! by 4160 Tuesdays. It’s a spicy oriental which somehow manages to be bitter and sweet at the same time – it makes me think of dark chocolate covered lemon fondant. Then as it dries down I swear I can smell freshly cut timber. Not tree felling – I’m no lumberjack, but the treated kind used for construction. Timber that’s just been cut through with a circular saw and might be a bit scorched from the friction. It’s utterly bonkers stuff, but I think I love it!
Oh, sounds fun!
That sounds wonderful!
Sounds great to me, too!
Mmm, sounds nice!
Sounds fantastic. Where did you find it, BobH?
I got it from their website. They were selling off all their old style bottles for half price earlier on this year. I would say if you can get hold of them, they’re definitely worth checking out, and they do great sample and mini sets on their website.
L’artisan’s Mure et Musc. Sometimes I wish the berry to be a little darker and juicier though.
I actually own a few flankers of Alien but I never could bring my self to buy the original…
I liked the flankers better too. Couldn’t find my samples!
The M&M Extreme has more berry and is my favorite of the two.
My favorite berry perfume is Mistral Wild Blackberry. Recently discontinued 🙁 I just put my bottle in the fridge.
Sounds like one I need to try and hunt down before it’s too late!
(I think we all need a mini fridge for our beloved bottles 😉 )
I also own one of the flankers and can’t wear the original Alien.
I have the day off and just got up, so no scent yet. I can still smell the Bvlgari Black from yesterday. I have a very soft spot in my heart for veterans. My father was in the army for over thirty years. He was in WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He died in 1980 in November, so this is my least favorite month of the year
Oh, so sorry! And wow, 30 years. Thanks for telling us about him.
Wow, I have two family members who served in two of those wars that you mentioned (one per member), but not one person in all three. My hat is off to your dad.
A tiny tiny amount of SL Rahät Loukoum, which is very sweet and powdery but in a way that I like. It makes me happy and daydreamy.
Yum.
My dear dad was in the Navy, but most decidedly not the military type (wound up being a professor). He wore aftershave– Aramis, Old Spice or Royall Lyme. This Veterans Day is more meaningful to me after having visited the American Cemetery in Normandy this past Sept…incredibly beautiful and moving.
SOTD is pre-reform Eau Premiere and am grateful I got a backup of the older juice.
Did you see 60 Minutes this week–the former head of Procter & Gamble, who’s now in charge of the veteran hosp system was profiled. When his previous position was described, they said something like his company “put Tide, Pampers and Joy in drawers around the world.” Wonder what Patou would have thought of that!
I would love to go to Normandy. My dad was Army Air Corps, he served on Saipan in WWII, and also later became a professor.
Military service to professor must be a thing. That was my dad, too. Korean war to college professor via the GI Bill. Like galbanumgal’s dad, he was an Old Spice aftershave kind of guy.
Yep! The GI bill is a huge part of it, I think. My dad was the first of his family to make it through college, and he went right on through his Ph.D. Plus, my dad has never put it this way, but many aspects of college life must have seemed terribly attractive after the what they’d been through in the war, right?
Yes, indeed.
Wearing Mito today. I wanted something to sorta match the kinda-warm day we’re having here before the bitter cold hits us (possible snow later this week, ugh).
Ugh indeed. I don’t know where you are but I’d rather not know, LOL…if we have snow coming, I’ll be pissed.
Wearing the gorgeous Rien. I need a decant of this.
I need to try that again. And still have not tried the Intense.
Me either but I’m curious about it! Especially since I’m thinking about my favorite releases of the year and realizing how many I haven’t tried.
I love Rien but find the intense to actually be an improvement in some ways. It’s less sweet and more dry smoke and seems more fleshed out, which is sometimes what I really want. I do think the original is much more about the leather. Rien smells like the inside of my saddle leather backpack and RII is like someone emptied a censer into said backpack. They are different enough to me that I could easily make room for a decant of each in my collection.
Timbuktu for me today! It’s afternoon here, so it’s dried down to that lovely soft close-to-the-skin woodsiness I’ve been looking forward to. It feels maybe a bit too chilly for today though – I’ll be switching to warmer woods now that winter’s definitely on its way…
Nothing yesterday, was under the weather with my second autumn cold and mostly slept through the day. Today I feel much better, am off to see some friends from a recent workshop and wearing a bit of my social favourite Miss Dior.
Glad you are feeling better. Miss Dior is great for social events 🙂 I like wearing it when I go shopping too.
Thank you! And oh yes! And sometimes a spritz before going to bed.
My brother is in the military, been to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He has dealt with some tough situations, and I am proud of how he has handled it!
SOTD is Bottega Veneta. I bought a set of Bottega Veneta minis (including knot, essence aromatique, and pour homme) on ebay – they don’t count if they are mini, right?? BV is full bottle worthy, will probably splurge when my mini is gone. Has anyone tried the BV body oil?
My appreciation to your brother.
Didn’t know they made a body oil! That really appeals to me- is it in the original BV scent?
Yes! I haven’t seen it but I know it is sold online. There is also body powder, which I am not normally into but I think would be amazing in this scent! Sounds so luxurious.
Thanks Rose! I am planning on a Google search for it at first opportunity! This is the time of year my skin really needs some help and I do love the scent but the EdP is a bit too pushy for me- I bet the oil is out of this world!
The body oil is very nice. Not heavily scented, but layers nicely with the edp.
SOTD is Matin d’Orage, one last bit of springtime before the really cold weather hits. Lovely!
All the veterans–thank you for your service. On Veteran’s Day, I am often a bit embarrassed to admit my family has very few people who served in the military, but a rich history of military deserters from the Boer war through Vietnam.
LOL — I like the idea of a “rich history of military deserters” too!
LOL, that’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day!
No need to be embarrassed, Mish, especially where ‘Nam was concerned; many people didn’t agree with that one (so I’ve heard). 🙂
I am sampling Violet Fumee today which I’m so far liking. I am now below 300 untried samples, assuming my counts were accurate. Hooray!
300! Yikes. That’s a lot of samples. I’m still a bit of a fledgling beginner and I get flustered when I have more than 10 untried samples.
I claimed some reverse fairy offerings off the Posse, I bought some, I live in the NY area and got some free from stores, some were included with purchases, some were gifts….but yeah, I was definitely shocked when I counted them around May
Ohh, I may have to put on some Violette Fumee today. It went from about 75 degrees here yesterday to 30 degrees today and Violette Fumee is such a lovely cold weather scent. It definitely has an edge to it, too, which I think will rather adequately express my resentful mood towards this weather.
Oooo, forgot I had that. It’s so lovely. That will be my “lay-me-down” scent for this evening, thanks!
OMG, I finally made it below the 300 mark as well! Most of them are from your everyday department stores, some are from Sephora, where (at least the one where I live) you are always guaranteed to receive up to 3 if you wish (altho they evaporate quickly in those plastic tubes, which I unhappily discovered one day), and a handful from the kind folks on this very blog. I have discovered many new favorites via samples.
I am wearing Coco Mademoiselle extrait layered with Chanel EDC, loving it, light and clean.
Thank you again pyramus about the info on Rahat. I went there yesterday and bought the two sprays now I am good for a long time.
I think I have uncovered enough Angel adjacent scents for four days. Today I am wearing the sadly discontinued Yves Rocher Neonatura Cocoon. It is a warm vanilla-cocoa-patchouli blanket of a scent. Sweet, but not achingly so.
Cocoon is one of my favorites, glad I got a backup bottle. On me it’s not sweet, but rather dry cocoa/vanilla/patchouli. Great name for a wonderful blanket scent!
Cocoon is amazingly good. Hardly anything to it but every element is perfectly chosen and arranged. It’s my favourite minimalist scent.
I’ve got the US flag out on the front porch; can see it from my desk. My deep appreciation to all veterans. My dad served in the Navy during the calm before the storm of Vietnam; my brother-in-law has served the US Army in Desert Storm and Afghanistan (just got back from his third deployment to Afghanistan about six weeks ago).
No fragrance yet, but it will be Aedes Oeillet Bengale in just a little while. I’ve got a lovely L’Occitane Sentier de Maquis candle in the little hexagonal tin burning on the desk too – reminds me of Coty Chypre.
Incidentally, L’Occitane seems to have switched to all glass candle holders, and I don’t see Sentier de Maquis anywhere on the website now. Wonder why.
I’ve never heard of Sentier de Maquis! We obviously didn’t get that one. But I was in store about 3 wks ago and there was still the tin candle display, but lavender, verbena and some others in glass. Itd be a shame though, I like those tins!
I am wearing Omnia Platino today. It is sweet, but not too much for me.
Ava Luxe No. 23 for me today. Such a calm, lovely scent!
No relatives in my generation went into the service, but my father and all my uncles served, and my grandfather served in the navy in WWI.
I was happily surprised yesterday to see a veteran selling poppies for the VFW outside my grocery store. I hadn’t seen anyone selling them in years. Perhaps the poppies are making a comeback?
Remembrance/Armistice Day poppies are a big thing here, for as long as I can remember. We also commemorate the fallen soldiers with a minute of silence at 11am. I remember not too long ago being in shopping centers and they’d stop the registers and ask everyone to be silent for the minute, but I’m not sure they do that anymore..
They’ve sold them all along in my small town, but I think it might depend on how involved the veterans at the local VFW are.
Family story: several years ago, my father-in-law had suffered a heart attack and was in the hospital on Nov. 11. While my husband and I were there, one of the younger nurses came in to check on Bill and was asking him what year it was, who was President, what his full name was, and the date. Bill answered all the questions correctly, with his answer to “What’s today?” being “Armistice Day.” The nurse looked at him askance, and we had to assure her that he was in fact correct.
Nice story
Anticipating the nasty cold weather that’s imminent, I’m already wrapped in the cozy embrace of the original Omnia. Chai spices with a bit of white chocolate, one of my very favorite November ‘brown’ scents.
My dad and all my many uncles served in WWII all around the globe. One of my uncles was a medic killed in the
Philippines when he was just 21, helping get wounded soldiers off the battlefield. My grandma had a small table in her parlor as a memorial to him, with his Army photo, bronze star, silver star, and purple heart. As a child I was always drawn to this display and grew to know and love him despite never having met him. I always think of him on Veterans’ Day.
Wow, just 21…your poor grandma.
Gusts of 50 mph today expected so I am cozy in Guerlain SDV today.
My dad was in the Navy during WWII. We could never get him to talk about his wartime experiences, all he would say was that his ship “had helped our boys on Okinawa.” I also had two cousins serve in Vietnam. I am grateful to our military for their service.
My father couldn’t talk about his experiences in Vietnam for around twenty years after the fact, and even then the info came out in bits and pieces, but nothing graphic. My grandfather, on the other hand, gladly told some war stories (WWII) when asked. I always thought that difference was fascinating.
Lys Med today, and Le Parfum de Therese tonight. I like most of the Malles, but I find a harshness to many that prevents it from being love.
My mums father did his military training but wasn’t conscripted as he was a farmer and was needed on the land. My dads father fought for his country, in Mussolini’s army in Africa. War is war- everyone does what they have to do I guess. I believe there are good people and not so good people, but I don’t believe that they are divided by lines on a map. Just my opinion.
Almost nothing is as simple as lines on a map, or black and white, right?
I’m always glad for the reminder, black and white thinking is seductively easy.
War is a tragedy on all sides. Most of the people involved are just normal people in a bad situation. I think Veteran’s day is very bittersweet.
Have you tried En Passant or L’Eau d’Hiver? Not harsh at all. And IMHO, Carnal Flower is as smooth as butter. But you better like tuberose! 😉
Lots of veterans in my family, but my stepson Kristopher is the youngest. He’s 24 and in the Air Force, has served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and will be deployed overseas again in December.
I’m wearing fig! figgy fig! Dambrosia with premier figuier body oil.
Can anyone help with Spawn of Angel suggestions?
I can think of Lolita Lempicka and Wish by Chopard, anything else obvious?
(does every fruity floral on dept store counters like Si and Manifesto and La Vie est Belle count?- I’d prefer something wearable though 😉 ) thanks! 🙂 🙂
La Vie certainly counts, so does Si & Manifesto although a little more removed. We ought to have a spawn of Angel tag, it would help. Flowerbomb would work, so would Jimmy Choo, or AP Fatale, or EL Pleasures Delight.
Robin and PerthGal, are you talking about Si Lolita, or Si from Armani. I rather liked the Lolita one, and am eyeballing a bottle that has been hanging out at my local TJ Maxx.
Armani Si!
I think they key to Angel, the thing that made it so outrageous in its time, was that it didn’t have any discernible floral notes: almost entirely food, plus patchouli.
If you’re comfortable with men’s scents, you have options. A*Men and its various flankers (particularly Pure Malt and Pure Coffee) are clearly related to Angel and are generally excellent. Lempicka Au Masculin is the guy version of Lolita Lempicka and is I think even better than the women’s — drier and woodier.
If you have a Sephora nearby, you could try CSP Vanille Abricot, which is not really a clone but is very close to the spirit of Angel — warm and sweet and foody. Sephora also used to sell a line called Laurence Dumont (I don’t know if they still do — probably not) that has a scent called Vanille Chocolat which is basically an exact copy of Angel except without the patchouli.
Thanks! I think I have a sample of Jimmy Choo, but I wish I had any of those masculines! LL masculine has been on my list for a while. And I have some Womanity if I want to go in the Mugler direction I guess 🙂
SOTD is Laurence Dumont Tendre Madeleine. It’s perfect for polar vortex weather, which we are getting in Northwest Arkansas. Just enough spice and cozy vanilla. I still have unpacking to do, but all I really want to do is sit around drinking coffee or tea and reading. Must accomplish something soon. The in-laws are coming for Thanksgiving (which is a good thing), but the house isn’t ready for company. It’s good to have a deadline, though.
We’re getting that here in Missouri, too. Not fun at all. Maybe you can unpack just a little and then have some tea and read! Moving is exhausting and you may just need some rest. 🙂
I sure someone in my fam served in the military but don’t know who they are. My parents didn’t, that I do know. I did, however, have this young neighbor who was very sweet. He helped me with my car once when it was stuck in the driveway due to bad weather. He soon went to Afghanistan and sadly perished not too long after that. He was 18 or 19:(. It was a bummer cause he seemed like such a nice kid. He just had a nice disposition about him.
Tested Indochine by PG. Smokey, burnt sugar and honey.
Stories like yours (and Laila’s above) are just heartbreaking.
I agree. Such a waste.
Da*n. That bites. Your story reminds me of the Dixie Chick song ‘Travelin’ Soldier. I heard it live once (well, on t.v.), and teared up considerably.
SOTD is Shalimar, the real deal in extrait. Gorgeous, warm and just plain great.
Mmmm!
I’m in the edt 🙂
Has anyone else noticed similarities between Tom Ford Santal Blush and Nirvana Black? They certainly are not dupes, but there is a likeness. Santal Blush is earthier and Nirvana Black is cleaner. Although I have coveted Santal Blush from afar ($$$), I think I actually prefer Nirvana Black. There is a Nirvana Black perfume oil for sale at Sephora for $40. Majority of reviewers on Sephora lament the poor lasting power of the oil – I will need to explore further. I feel the purchase of Nirvana Black in some form is in my near future!
SOTD – Nirvana Black!
Not to my nose.
I was just sampling Nirvana last night and to me it is quite different than Santal Blush. SB is sweeeet.. and Nirvana is violet/vanilla/sandalwood in that order. I’ve got a 4ml sample of Santal Blush you can have if you’d like as I don’t and its just stitting around 😉 Send me a note a jkdienes at gmail dottt commm.
Ooooooh…emailing now! 🙂
Love the Nirvana Black edp – bought a bottle last month, no regrets! I tried the oil, thinking it would extend the lasting power of the perfume, but I can smell it for literally two seconds before I become completely anosmic to it. First time it happened to me and caught me off guard because I can smell the perfume so expected to be able to smell the oil! I have another oil so that doesn’t seem to be the issue. Maybe the oil on my skin extended my perfume’s life, but I couldn’t tell. Hope you have better luck than me, but in the meantime, you smell great!
Thanks for sharing about your experience with the perfume oil. Too bad – wishing it was great!
We have no Nirvana Black here, but I’ve always thought Santal Blush reminded me of Versace Crystal Noir …
CN has been reformulated and is now sold in the edt but I have an old bottle of the edp which is richer and lusher, and whilst it IS Versace vs Tom Ford, with CN having peroxide hair and big boobs, I still just smelled SB and thought Crystal Noir
Perthgirl, I JUST acquired a sample of CN, in the reformulated edt version. That bottle pretty much goes hand in hand your peroxide and big boobs analogy!
(lost the rest of my comment…)
I’m looking forward to comparing CN and SB. Thanks for pointing out the similarities!
Nirvana Black is quite nice and on me lasted a long time. Definitely something to wear for a night on the town; reminds me of NYC skyscrapers and nightclubs and all that such.
No SOTD yet today, but I am leaning towards Violette Fumee now! It got SO cold here last night, and it’s making me very grumpy.
I still have a little bit of Caron Infini EDC on from yesterday too. I found a bottle at an antique mall yesterday, but did not care for it in the EDC. It was just so pale and lackluster. I’ve heard that the EDP and extraits are much nicer. I did score a bottle of vintage Youth Dew bath oil though! Smells divine!
In honour of Remembrance Day, I went with the scent that seems to symbolically mark the close of WWI, Mitsouko.
My grandfather died before I was born, but I’m told he came back from WWII and never spoke of so much as which countries he went to. Makes me think that no matter how many stories I hear, books I read, or movies I watch, I will – hopefully – never understand what war was like for the men and women fighting for our freedoms. Immeasurable sacrifice. Lest we forget.
I am most humbly grateful for the sacrifices of my family members and friends who fought for our country: my maternal great-uncle who was a WWI pilot and died when his plane was shot down over Germany; my paternal grandfather who came to this country as an 18-year old newlywed and was so thrilled to be an American that he enlisted in WWI to fight against his own former countrymen; my paternal uncle who fought in Korea; my maternal uncle who was one of the paratroopers liberated by Patton’s army; my father who was an army medic and among the first group to enter Dachau (Other than a flat statement that he’d been there, he was unable to speak about it until the end of his life. He was 19 at the time.); several older brothers of high school friends who were called up for Vietnam in the very last draft lottery (some came back, some didn’t, all were deeply changed by the experience); my neighbor who served in the 1st Gulf War; and my son’s brother-in-law who is currently serving in Air Force intelligence.
My scent is Je Reviens from Worth, conceived as a gift for departing soldiers to give their best girls, letting them know that he would return to her.
Thank you so much for your lovely, lovely post. And Je Reviens, with its haunting beauty and backstory, is the perfect remembrance scent for today.
I came of age during the last draft and Viet Nam era. All the boys I knew were drafted, if they weren’t in college, most went to ‘Nam (as we called it); some didn’t return. We all lived in dread knowing that our boyfriends would soon go. My DH-to-be was drafted a few short months before our long-planned-for wedding, which if not for the interventions of the base chaplain would’ve been called off 2 days prior to its happening. We were somehow more fortunate than many others; he was never sent to ‘Nam and we were able to spend most of his time in the Army together here in the U.S.
Wearing LL Gaiac 10 today. Seemed to be the right fit for a gray cloudy day. I have a small decant, but I’m not that crazy about it. I do like a little sweetness in my scents and there is none here!
My uncle is the only one in my family that I know of who served in the military. He was in the Navy and served in Vietnam. He never talked about it much, and I can imagine why. I have lots of friends who were in the military at some point, and one friend who was in Desert Storm. I live in San Diego, which is a big Navy town, so there are lots of Veterans Day things going on, including a parade. So thankful for the service of all our veterans.
SOTD is Dior Ambre Nuit. I am floating in a fragrant cloud of spicy ambergris heaven thanks to a sample from a lovely friend and perfumista. *swoon*
This is the first I’ve tried from the Collection Privee and it, along with Mitzah, had been on the top of my ‘must try’ list. If Ambre Nuit is this good, I really need to find some Mitzah to try. This stuff is amazing and perfect to warm up the drizzly, cold and soon to be snowy weather outside.
Ambre Nuit is the best from that collection, IMHO of course. I love it. Only wish they made smaller sizes.
Bvlgari Black. Every time I wear this, I appreciate it that much more! Splendid scent that I will be wearing until He** freezes over- which may be soon with this Polar Vortex Insanity.
Stay warm folks!
That’s what I’m wearing too. It’s my first time wearing it and I’m really enjoying it in this 0 degree weather.
I’m deeply grateful for all of those that have served and protected and defended our country. I have an uncle who served in Vietnam and still suffers to this day from what he went through over there, and a grandfather who is no longer with us but received the purple heart for his valor while in the air force during WWII. The story is amazing and I’m very proud.
SOTD: Guerlain’s Terracotta Voile d’Ete
I really do like this scent, but it doesn’t last on me. The best part, about 15 minutes in, vanishes the quickest and then its mainly vanilla with a touch of spice.
Wearing Comme des Garçons Black.
Did a sample evening last night! I had to go to the drugstore and my prescription wasn’t ready, so I went to the frag section and tried Chanel 19 (edt), Valentino Uomo, and Magie Noire.
I LOVE the bitter green start of 19. OMG! LOVE-LOVE-LOVE. Then, after about an hour, it turns to vetiver. Vetiver and I are “frienemies” to put it mildly. That was a let down. (Anyone knows if Silences- often compared to no19 also goes vetiver-ish?)
Valentino Uomo was not a winner in my book, but S.O. was impressed. I wanted to like it, because of the bottle mostly, but it was weird, cheap, and all gone within an hour.
Magie Noire was my clear winner. While it has been through reformulations, it still reminded me of a friend from college who used to wear it. It lasted all evening, and I could still smell it on my arm this morning.
Looks like Santa will have to add Magie Noire to my list…. or I will have to help Santa and get it for myself.
I caved and bought myself Magie Noire a month ago. It is so distinctive and long lasting. Wonderfully sophisticated. Do help Santa on this one!
Today’s SOTD is Nicolai’s Amber Oud. I really didn’t expect to like this as lavender is not one of my favorite notes but here it is a star. Love it!
I have no idea why this is called Amber Oud though. I get zero Amber and zero Oud. Creamy lavender, yes.
SOTD = By Kilian Intoxicated
From a sample I got at Saks (quelle surprise…I “made” the Jo Malone SA beg for the Addictive State of Mind series on my behalf and the By Kilian SA reluctantly filled my atomizers…I came prepared in case I got the classic “We don’t have any sample container” excuse). The notes per LuckyScent are: Cardamom, mocha coffee, cinnamon, tobacco, vanilla, patchouli. All I got a few minutes into wearing it are cardamom, patchouli and something really sweet but oddly flat…I’m on the fence as I was expecting something plusher but I probably shouldn’t since plush and By Kilian don’t usually go together. I will give it ’til end of day since I’m stuck with it anyway. I still prefer Apple Brandy so perhaps this is money saved!
I like Intoxicated but not the price. Same with Apple Brandy.
I’m wearing Frapin 1270, and its boozy, stewed fruits and resins are just the ticket for this frigid, snowy Denver day. My dad – who most assuredly never wore fragrance in his life – was a Korean War veteran. He never spoke much about that time, and for whatever reasons, few here in the U.S. do, either. I am proud of my dad for infinite number of reasons, including his service to this country. Cheers to our veterans, today and everyday, and may we do better by them going forward.
Amouage Reflection and from the word go, I knew it was a mistake, as I needed something dirtier and with more bass today. Since Amouage is a fine scent, I did not scrub, but should have. Funny how the wrong scent match for the mood can put the whole day out of kilter!
Very similar to waking up on the wrong side of the bed.
I’m wearing EL Sensuous Noir today. Yummy. I found a 30ml bottle at TJ Maxx cheaper than any I’d seen on Amazon, so I snapped it up. Nice when something I find at TJ Maxx that is actually something on my wish list. 🙂
I, too, have a soft spot for Veterans.
Every generation of daddy’s family has served going back to the Revolutionary War. Both of my grandfathers fought in WWII. All of my mama’s brothers and one of her sisters were Army or Air Force. Daddy was in the Air Force, most of my brothers are Marines, and I have many cousins still serving now.
My deepest gratitude goes out to all who have served, American troops, and those in every other country, as well. I thought the poppy display at the Tower was especially beautiful.
SOTD: Jub 25, what else???
I awoke early this morning with the pleasure of a stomach bug. Of course, I have a gajillion things I really need to be doing and a super hectic schedule at work that I’ll have to cover tomorrow. Ugh, why don’t I ever get sick during a slow period? Since I’m at home, I should be packing or doing something useful but I feel terrible so am just cuddling the cat and dosing.
My dad was in the Navy and quite a few uncles and cousins have served as well as many of my in-laws. Most of them aren’t around for me to thank anymore but I am so grateful to everyone who is a veteran. I was just thinking of that the other day as we packed the stuff in the den. My husband is a military history geek and keeps most of the family military memorabilia in a really wonderful little display that I hadn’t really looked closely at for a long time. It was surprisingly hard to pack away, even temporarily.
Am, unsurprisingly, unscented today. I even had to wear the guest robe since my nausea was tickled by the remains of perfume on my regular one. If I feel better, I think I’ll try an incense scent later.
Hope you feel better soon.
SOTD is Jolie Madame. We had a beautiful day here N of the 49th parallel… temperatures hit 16 degrees C. Positively balmy. Jolie Madame fit the bill today.
Passed a L’Occitane store that had a tester of that new Arlésienne out on a little table on the sidewalk. To me it smells a lot like Prada Infusion d’Iris.
OTOH, who knows how long that bottle has been out in the sun, so maybe it actually smells completely different unless you leave your bottle out in the sun for the same amount of time. I should try one of the indoor testers someday.
I woke up cranky and tired and just plain ole crabby today, so I felt like wearing something obnoxious and thoughtless to my practicum. Tubereuse Criminelle. God rest my soul.
Anyhow, it cheered me up on this gross Chicago day. Also, today was the first day I ever got the gasoline accord from TC that’s so often discussed round these parts — usually I just get the minty menthol. It was awesome! (I just adore its opening – love at first weird sniff!)
That’s a great story! Well, not the fact that you woke up cranky, but that you used it to your advantage. I am LOLing over here.
Just can’t do Alien, as much as I try. I have to walk away when the refill station at Ulta has been in use. Maybe someday my nose will change.
For today I’m enjoying a sample of Caron Bellodgia EdT. I like it very much. It is rich, rounded, and “just so” in an old school way.
My family loves its soldiers and its scents. My nephew is a Marine (Stetson), my father was a Navy Seal (Old Spice), my grandfathers were a Navy officer (Bay Rum) and an Army paratrooper (Aqua Velva). My great uncle was an Air Force pilot who did not return home from WWII.
Today we will take time as a family to remember and cherish those who served. My father’s birthday is November 12, so that gives us another reason to celebrate the life we are so fortunate to share.
Dad was a Marine and hubby is a Vietnam vet. Thanks to all who serve(d)! I wore Dans Tes Bras today. Love that stuff, hope EL or IFRA don’t ruin it.
I am wearing Shalimar ode de la vanille sur la route du madagascar..my last bottle. Does anybody know a similar scent?
I have edp edt and mexique, nobody notices..madagascar though..TONS of compliments!! The sillage of the new edp is way lower than it was imo.
Never had the extrait, is it still good???
Thank you all!!!
Hello bonardi!
Look for the extrait in the cube tester bottle, turns up on ebay occasionally (no affiliation). If you like Shalimar, it is fantastic!!
thank you so much!!!
