Wednesday scent of the day 10/22

Posted by Robin on 22 October 2014 160 Comments

Prada menswear campaign 2012

Happy Wednesday! What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Prada Amber Pour Homme.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/24, we're doing Gender Wars: wear something marketed to your gender opposite, with partial credit for wearing something marketed as unisex.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image is Gary Oldman, Garrett Hedlund, Jamie Bell and Willem Dafoe for Prada Menswear Fall/Winter 2012.

Looks like you’re getting an early start on the Friday Gender War!
So did I actually as I wearing vintage Montana Eau de Peau last night.
SOTD is Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentré, a former signature scent of mine.

And you smell great, if I had that one I’d be wearing it!

On basenotes, there is a 2001 interview with Michael Edwards in which he indicated that Chanel pour Monsieur was then the closest match to the original Coty Chypre.

Chanel Pour Monsieur is indeed a great chypre (or oriental fougère according to some) but the Chanel Pour Homme Concentré is a spicy oriental. Not to every one’s liking, the Concentré version is still, IMHO, a great fragrance in it’s own right.

Alien, because the new trainee quit and I don’t have to be considerate with my scent today. Anyone who gets too close will just have to suffer.
The lady in the waiting area keeps sneezing but I’m blaming her huuuuge Aqua-net sillage. It’s actually making my eyes burn (and making me slightly nostalgic).

Oddly, the first thing I thought of was a Baptist girls camp in about 6th grade. We used Aqua Net to knock scorpions off the outside of the cabin screens, and there was an Aqua Net scandal of some kind. Theft? Spray in someone’s food? One of the girls was a dancer and had multiple huge cans (and glitter makeup which was confiscated). I had completely forgotten (blocked?) that experience and still have no idea what led to my being there.

I’m wearing La Prairie Life Threads Platinum today. This scent is a very nice traditional chypre with actual oakmoss. It might be a bit much for office wear, but I’m heading out to the field later this morning, so I can rock it just fine.

You are the first person I ever see admitting in public (Perfumeland, I mean) that she’s wearing this perfume. I really liked La Prairie Life Threads Platinum and bought, I think, 10 samples at some point but whenever I offered to share with any of my perfume pals not a single person was interested.

I liked the moss-patchouli stuff in the base. I was less enthralled with the screechy florals above it (and you know I *like* my florals). I gave it a shot, it just wasn’t good for me.

Didn’t March at Perfume Posse like it, though? I have a vague recollection.

I doubt I’d ever have purchased this at its original price ($150 I think?), but when they discontinued the line I picked up a bottle for $40 and at that price, it’s an excellent value. Heck, I loved these bottles and wanted one to set out. Thankfully, I liked one of the scents that came with them. :)

It’s a bit much when you first put it on, but on me, at least, the ‘muchness’ only lasts for minutes before the woody/mossy good stuff comes to the forefront.

I wasn’t enamoured of the other scents – gold and silver – but platinum spoke to me.

I’m wearing Amouage Sunshine today – such a happy happy scent! It’s super light – I’ve doused myself (2x my normal sprays) and I still can barely detect it. It’s fruity – the notes say black current + osmanthis and that combo smells peachy with just the slightest hint of vanilla to my nose. Despite it’s lightness, it seems to last for hours. Typical of Amouage, I’ll get a good 6-8 hour longevity.

Amouage seems to be my house of houses. Almost everything works beautifully for me and several are listed in my list of desert island scents. I’ll need a bottle of Sunshine when my decant runs dry. A beautiful sunny yellow bottle!

How would you personally describe that scent? I’ve been considering purchasing a decant because I’m a Malle fangirl, but I’m worried it might be a bit too masculine? I looooove green, but sometimes scents with vetiver (prob Vetiver Extraordinaire, too) verge on the masculine, I find.

I love Noir Epices and if it wasn’t so $$$ I’d already own a bottle. As it is I consider myself lucky to have about 10 mls. I find it very wearable for women. It smells like a whopper rich cousin to Chanel Coco, which I like very much, so there is no problem there. I get a lot of neroli/orange peel out of it. The opening is very dense, but it smooths out fairly quickly. I find only a small squirt is necessary, and it’s one of my favorites in very cold weather.

SOTD is Volutes having seen it mentioned a number of times the past few days I decided to dig out my sample.
As I’ve also been sampling Chergui I immediately get the tobacco & honey similarity, but Volutes is much softer and easier to wear than Chergui IMO.
Perfect pick for a rainy and cold day.

Am finally getting around to testing the “petal” samples that Pinrose sent me a couple weeks ago. I’m still doubtful that the petals will last more than a couple of hours – they’re like those wet wipe thingies, and I don’t think I like them.

On the other hand, Moonlight Gypsy smells quite a bit like Organza Indecence, so we’ll see if I get decent wear out of it. Will report back.

Coming to the conclusion that not only are these Pinrose things as I suspected, just variations on the average department-store stuff, they’re not even cheaper, as they advertise that they are. Mind you, Moonlight Gypsy is pretty decent, but if you can get an ounce of it for $50 at Pinrose and 3.3 ounces of Organza Indecence (the Mythiques version) for $95… well…

I knew I wasn’t a particular fan of towelettes, but don’t hate them specifically. The lasting power on these (I’ve tried four of the ten now) is actually decent, but sillage is pretty much nada, and then there’s the whole issue of “what if I want more than this for one application?”

I’m wearing Arkinson’s Odd Fellow’s Bouquet. It’s an easy to wear, undemanding scent that reminds me of an uncle’s cherry pipe tobacco.

I’ve noticed that some folks here know a lot about essential oils. My 4th grader was sent home with her second note this year that another student in her class has lice. Does anyone know of any scents to repel the little buggers? I may be naive, but I’m hoping that there’s something preventive I can spray on hair/clothing so she doesn’t carry any stragglers home. Thanks!

I’m no expert, but I searched at a website that I like (and have no affiliation with) and it seems that lavandin, which is a more camphorous lavander, can work well for that. The link is:

My boss is a certified aromatherapist so I just texted her for some info, but lemongrass and peppermint are both natural insect repellents. I wouldn’t put any directly on their hair, but put maybe 10-20 drops of either of those in a 2oz spray bottle with water (or 30-40 in a 4 oz) and spray it on their hair. Also, 10-20 drops of tea tree oil, or the lemongrass or peppermint, in their shampoo would probably also be helpful.

These are just my suggestions, but I will report back when I hear from my boss!

Hope this isn’t too late to be any good, but after several dreadful bouts of lice in our family we have totally nailed it and have been free of them during the last few epidemics. Once we got rid of the little beasts by using a lice comb and quantities of cheap white conditioner every 3 days until clear, we started using tea tree shampoo and conditioner on the kids. Not one little beast for over two years now. Every time we get a note home about lice we spray diluted tea tree oil into school hats too. Tea tree is very unattractive to lice and I think they just choose another head when they smell it.

SOTD is Profumum Fiore d’Ambre. Notes are reportedly amber and opium, but having never smelled opium I will have to go on faith. In any case, it’s warm, somewhat dusty. with a touch of salt. Not sweet so far. I think it’s very nice.

A Lipstick Rose day! Always makes me happy.

I do feel for the commenter who sprayed too much yesterday – it is tenacious and big. One spray lasts me for several hours.

Don’t think I saw Marjorie Rose here yet today but I know she is a big lipstick rose fan as well.

Wearing AG Nuit Etoilee today. It’s been chilly in the mornings lately, though warming up during the day so I am having a hard time choosing scents lately. I think I made a good choice today. Even though the piney-ness makes it seem “wintry”, the mint is cooling and hopefully won’t overpower once it warms up.

Just have to decide if I want the feminine or masculine. Leaning toward the masculine one (and it’s cheaper too!).

Oh, and yes, when I got my bottle in the spring I thought, “This is the perfect fragrance for spring!” And now that it’s fall I have been thinking the same thing. Bulb: Lights of America, FML-27 Model 9024B 27W. I got the lamp at Home Depot several years ago. I don’t rememer how much cost, but I think that it was well under $50 (it’s a small desk lamp). It came with a bulb. Whenever I look for replacement bulbs (you don’t have to replace the bulb very often) at Home Depot, I have to ask for help because they are not shelved with the other bulbs.

I don’t have the box for the lamp any longer, but you should look for terms like “Natural Full Spectrum Sun Light. Simulates Daylight.” I have some gemstone rings, and some of them turn different shades under different lighting (regular office fluorescent lighting, incandescent lighting, and my lamp that simulates daylight). When I hold them up to my simulated daylight lamp, they look the same as they do outside in the natural sunlight. Cool!

Less than a full squirt is the perfect amount. I get a lot of compliments when I wear Coco, and I think that’s because I keep it as low dose as possible. And that’s also why I have a bottle that will last me about 6 years.

SL Clair de Musc. I’m a grad student at UChicago, and everybody here is really bare bones as far as make-up and scent go, maybe because everybody is so studiously nerdy. Not even patchouli-smelling Karma-wearin’ hippies — the shame! ;) When I’m on campus I’ve had to go with really light skin scents, or something fairly innocuous. One day I want to wear Lust or Black Oud though and tear things up! But I won’t, because I’m gutless and Lust in the daytime would just be cruel.

I’m here for the social work school. Yeah, I’m a product of state school undergrad and it’s a completely different world. Everybody’s nice and smart, but there’s a sort of weird mentality there that seems endemic to ivy-ish league-type schools. Like everybody is entitled in the sense that they are used to having the best of the best schooling, so if they don’t like or agree with a prof, they feel personally insulted and/or marginalized. Ugh. I relate more to the clients at my practicum who are DV victims and alcoholics than the people in my cohort. Well, I’m also in recovery, so there’s that! (Phew, I guess I needed to vent! Thanks!)

I hope I didn’t come off as obnoxious and snobby! It’s a UofC thing – they separate people at the various schools eg law, policy, social work into more manageable groups that you have all your classes with for your first year – I think it’s to make them homey, but it can also be a semi-prison if you don’t care for the people in your cohort! ;)

SotD is vintage Brousseau Ombre Rose (*not* the reformulated L’Original).

Normally I would run a mile from an old-school powdery rose (I’m all about in-your-face orientals and chypres), but there’s something about vintage Ombre Rose… it has a tangy citrusy note that cuts through the powder and keeps it balanced and interesting. Very wearable!

I’m going to put it aside for when I’m better and hope next time I get the same beautiful amber and incense I got the first time.

Tonight, I’m going to take a hot bath with one of my fave bath products–Pure Fiji Coconut Milk bath (not affiliated) in the gingerlily scent, spray on a bit of LAP’s Fleur d’Oranger ’05 and hope for sweet dreams and a happier nose (well, entire body, really) in the morning. ;)

A glorious fall day here with bright sunshine and temps a bit warmer. One of my rugosa rose bushes is still bravely blooming, defiant despite falling leaves and nighttime temps hovering near frost. Large fragrant roses with luscious and creamy yellow/peach/apricot petals, they inspired my scent choice today: A tiny spritz of vintage Lancome Tresor edp layered over apricot/vanilla lotion captures their essence. I ‘treasure’ both!
