Monday scent of the day 10/20

Posted by Robin on 20 October 2014 137 Comments

Ringo Starr for John Varvatos #peacerocks

Welcome to another week! Do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing John Varvatos Artisan on one hand and Artisan Acqua on the other. Artisan Acqua is much nicer than I expected, but all the same I'll stick with "plain" Artisan.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/24, we're doing Gender Wars: wear something marketed to your gender opposite, with partial credit for wearing something marketed as unisex.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: yep, that's Ringo. Snap a photo or video showing your peace sign, post it to Twitter, Instagram or Vine with the hashtag #PEACEROCKS before 12/31, and John Varvatos will donate $1 to the Ringo Starr Peace & Love Fund.

My scent of yesterday and today is Golden Cattleya by Olympic Orchids. I wore it yesterday to visit my in-laws. When she hugged me, my mother-in-law commented on how good I smelled. She liked it so much that she drew me in for a second hug. She said that she really liked it and that it smelled “dusty.” I said that it must be the resins.

The four of us (me, husband, and in-laws) went for a walk and she smelled like Shalimar — probably from the huge jar of cream I gave her for Christmas 🙂

      Yay for sweet inlaws!

I don’t usually have trouble with sweet fruity florals, and I tend to mind them less than most perfume lovers do. But I found that nearly all the orchid scents I tried from Olympic Orchids were gooey, sticky, fruity candy-sweet on me. Now, Ballets Rouges I love, but the orchid scents are just not my thing, and it’s somewhat puzzling to me because none of the other reviews I’ve read of them mention this extravagant sugar content – so it *must* be me. Shrug.

I’ve only tried two of the orchid scents — Golden Cattleya and Red Cattleya. I love them both. On me, they both start off as very sweet (I do have a high tolerance for sweetness), but the sweetness does not stay at a super high level on my skin.

On me, after the first 10 or 15 minutes of some fruity sweetness, the Golden exhibits a dry, dusty sweetness and the fruitiness disappears. The Red Cattleya exhibits a humid sweetness (Victorian greenhouse, and all 🙂 ) and its fruitiness lasts longer and then the flowers and spices become dominant.

I know that I am not a true perfumista, because, a free sample of Ballets Rouges was included with one of my orders, and when I sniffed the vial, I was kind of turned off because it smelled like perfume to me (perhaps this is the “vintage” aspect that O.O. was trying to reproduce?). I will try it on skin at some point — I’m not completely philistine after all 🙂

And yes, hooray for sweet in-laws!

Well, you like what you like. You’re allowed to *not* like Ballets Rouges. 🙂

I was just surprised to not see anybody’s review mention the sweetness of Golden Cattleya and Red Cattleya when they were so sweet for so long on me (and I usually burn through topnotes pretty fast).

Oh, and don’t let that “true perfumista” crap mess with your mind. If you like fragrance, you are a true perfumista.

(I don’t like Mitsouko. Or more to the point, she doesn’t like ME. And I have a serious dislike of several of the five-star scents in Perfumes: The Guide, just for example. Everybody has a personal set of tastes.)

In the morning I wore Tokio Milk Excess to give a class (can´t refrain from this ridiculous rhyme, it’s Monday morning and my brain isn’t fully working), but now it is fading and I´ll play with my Comme des Garçons Incense Series sampler set, because of Victoria’s beautiful article at Bois de Jasmin.

Greetings after a long week off the grid. I was sick as a wet dog last week and went commando most of the time. SOTD now is Bottega Veneta Eau Legere. I love that nutty part! I got my dad a bottle of Artisan a few years ago. It is so crisp and well done. If I already didn’t have a few OBs, I’d get that too. It definitely rivals AG’s Neroli. I’m hoping to snag a decant off my Dad’s bottle one of these days. Cheers!

Armani Prive Bois d’Encens. Not particularly interesting on me, but pleasant nonetheless. I spent part of the weekend enjoying the great outdoors, and I’m feeling less in the mood for obviously perfumey fragrances, and more inclined towards scents that reference forests and mountains. That might be my theme of the week.

Though I think it was the intention, this doesn’t smell like church to me. I love church incense, but this smells a lot woodier to my nose, which places my imagination outdoors instead of indoors. It makes me think of nature, and this is a very peaceful and serene fragrance: absolutely nothing harsh, sharp, or heavy. I can’t imagine anyone finding this offputting or disagreeable. If anything, it might be too quiet, but I think there are days when quiet is just right.

Arpége Pour Homme, which is largely sandalwood with enough other ingredients thrown in (pepper, iris and jasmine, vanilla) to make it interesting. It doesn’t seem to have any relationship to the original Arpége but that’s par for the course.

Launched in 2005, died probably around 2008? There wasn’t much call for it. I think you can’t make a men’s version so many decades after the original women’s version, especially if the original is no longer top-twenty: even Opium Pour Homme (1995, original 1977) and Rive Gauche Pour Homme (2003, original 1971) were pushing it, I thought, although they still seem to be in production (I haven’t seen them in years, mind you).

Good morning! I’m in Theorema today. Loving that it’s finally cooling down outside and I can wear some Fall favorites. I’m am also a bit giddy because my date on Saturday went really well. He seemed interested in my perfume ‘hobby’ (let’s not call it an obsession quite yet) and mentioned liking EL Knowing. So of course, I’m on a mission to track some down and give it a sniff.

He also asked me what I liked and I had no answer for him as far as “men’s” fragrances goes. I’ll have to share with him a bit of my Black and Chypre Palatin, but I could sure use some other suggestions for great masculine scents!

So many good ones are just marketed as unisex, but my picks: most Amouage men’s, Bottega Veneta pour homme, Tom Ford Noir, Guerlain Vetiver, Habit Rouge, and L’Instant pour homme, Chanel Anteus and Egoiste, Varvatos Artisan and Vintage Platinum (I think that’s what it is), JPG Le Male and Fleur de Male, Armani Code, Terre d’Hermes, Acqua di Parma men’s anything, Knize Ten, Caron Yatagan…

So many great ideas – I’m making a list so I can acquire some samples. I did sniff Spicebomb during a lunch run. Good stuff! But I didn’t leave with a sample.

Also, I stopped at the EL counter to sniff Knowing to see what it’s all about. Of Course, there was no one around and after standing around pantomiming “lost and confused customer” for about 5 minutes, someone finally walked over from across the store. Of Course, Knowing wasn’t on display (why not display all the perfume?) Of Course, Knowing wasn’t even available behind the counter to sniff. I left unhappy and not going back. This Macy’s is pretty unfortunate in the cosmetics area.

That is a nice story, and very promising! Guess what, my BF wears Knowing often and it smells divine on him. He is wearing it today – we are sitting at the airport; will be separated for some weeks (my work commute), and I know he wears it partially because I like it so much on him. He would do really well on Friday’s community theme, as he (correctly) has observed that there are way more terrific “women’s fragrances” than mens’.

Confession: I often have trouble with these gender-bendy experiments, in that I grew up and came of age in the late 70s/mid-80s, when Men Were Men and they Wore Manly Fougeres. To this day I can’t manage to wear anything even vaguely fougerey, not even the floralish ones like Troisieme Homme. But I might swipe my elder son’s VC&A Midnight in Paris. That’s marketed to men, isn’t it? The soft tonka-heavy woody orientals, I can do those.

SOThis Chilly Day – we turned the heat on this morning because it was 35F outside, 55 in – is the lovely, warm Soivohle Centennial.

We have a firewood-cutting policy for our farm: If you want to come get some from the storm-downed trees, have at it. Just leave us a pile of cut wood half as big as what you take home with you.

We usually have plenty of wood for the fireplace, which is nice.

Hotel Slut is nice. Haven’t been impressed with many of the others (which is probably good because I really sort of hate the ELd’O “we’re too cool for you, minivan moms” marketing). I mean, I’m not offended enough to avoid purchase, but I feel vaguely unwanted as a customer.

I just see it as being arrogantly French 😉 in which case, I just think yes they’re being all French mod and ‘artistique’ and that’s fine, it makes a nice change from the cool, elegant glamour of other lines (which I in turn, am not 😉 ) I like that my perfumes have their own vibes that I can channel by wearing them.

This thread made me chuckle… I love ELdO, but know what you mean about the cooler-than-thou marketing.

I went to their boutique in London earlier this year and the woman I spoke to was absolutely lovely, very warm and friendly… then at the end she handed me a business card and it had a typical ELdO-type ‘raunchy’ tagline on it like ‘Come on my face’ or similar. She looked a bit embarrassed… think she thought I’d be terribly offended.

I walked away feeling amused, wonderfully scented but very un-hip…

I visisted the main shop on the Rue des Archives in Paris. It was perfectly fine, and the SA was perfectly friendly. I think that for some people their advertising does them a disservice. Their fragrances are mostly good and distinctive and used to be very affordable.

I agree and think their marketing mostly playful and cheeky. I am the proud owner of a bottle of Putain des Palace and to me, it seems quite powdery and innocent.

I like the fact they are serious about fragrance but not so much about themselves and poke fun at the often times snooty fragrance industry.

I’m wearing Un Jardin en Méditerranée today. A commenter had mentioned she wears this in the fall and I thought I’d give it a try. So far I’ve got the same meh feeling about this as I did when I wore this in summer. It’s nice, but the world of perfume has opened up to me so many other wonderful scents that it’s hard to wear just a meh scent (at least to my nose).

Really enjoyed reading all the interesting answers to Saturday’s poll! Have a few new ones added to my list to try.

It doesn’t set my heart alight either, and I much prefer Sur le Nil and Après la Mousson, but for me this and Sur le Toit have a place in the ‘above your average warm weather doing housework and grocery shopping and fluffing about not wanting to concentrate perfume’ section 🙂

I woke up feeling panicky this morning. I am thinking that’s it’s because I am going to Virginia mid next week and I am worried about packing, what perfumes to take, hoping that I have more than enough money. So today’s SOTD is no 5. Cross of cold hearted bi**** and comfort.

I had to laugh, not at you (God knows I wouldn’t laugh at anyone for anxiety) but because when I feel panicky No. 5 is my go-to as well and I think a lot of people use it the same way. Hope you feel better soon and have a good trip!

SOTD is Boucheron. I needed something mild for Monday Morning Meetings.

One person said, You smell great, like some sort of French perfume!

    LOL.

So, I am going to New Orleans in November. Is there any place I should go to smell some wonderful scents?

Last time I was in New Orleans I wasn’t as interested in perfume as I am now, so I’d like to know as well. I think I’ll be heading there in 2015.
I believe Ms. hajusuuri was there recently. I wonder if she found any interesting shops/brands she might be able to tell us about?

Trying out Opus ii by Amouage today. I kinda wish I’d chosen something a little warmer to wear since it’s a bit chilly out today, but I do like it. It’s not as strong as I thought it would be, but perhaps I needed to add another spray.

Yesterday was spent exploring the autumnal forest at our nearby arboretum – crushed leaves and pine needles underfoot as we traipsed under glorious golden beeches, scarlet and orange maples, and stately, bronze oaks. Keeping that scent and sight memory alive one more day in SSS Winter Woods.

Autumn forest is awesome. Our rain finally slacked off on Saturday and I was able to smell all the dry leaves, what a wonderful smell.

Unfortunately I do something wacky to Winter Woods – it smells like an open fireplace on me. I wore my sample to work once and someone commented, “Are you burning wood in here?”

Yes, it’s funny how body chemistry plays such a role, isn’t it? On me, Winter Woods only has a hint of woodsmoke, as if you’ve been walking in the woods and catch sight of gently swirling smoke from a distant campfire and you ‘imagine’ rather than actually ‘smell’ the campfire.

Ahhh … that sounds like a beautiful place. It’s nice to have a perfume that keeps the memory alive.

We only get a little bit of fall color out here (I live in California’s Central Valley), but it is pretty. The California wild grape’s leaves can present a rainbow of colors, and the poison oak turns red (there has to be something good about poison oak, right? 🙂 But seriously, I know that it’s native and that it’s an important food source to some native animals).

My husband and I were listening to a podcast last night, and the host was railing against the lack of seasons in Los Angeles. Our response is: Become a birder! Or, more broadly, start observing nature, and you will changes throughout the year, even in Southern California. How cool would it be to see a grunion run?!? (a cool event that happens in SoCal). They spawn on the beach — scandalous! 🙂

We have the Seasonal Guide to the Natural Year for Northern California. The book series covers many areas of the country.

I hate when people say there are no seasons in California (I live in San Diego). There are, just not 4! We aren’t wearing shorts and flip flops all year. And if you want 4 seasons, there are plenty of places you can go to get that. Isn’t that why people move to California – to get away from the extreme hot and cold weather? I know that was one of the main reasons I moved here.

You’re right. Those of us who live in areas that have 4 distinct seasons are sometimes ignorant of those differences because, to us, they may seem minor. Also, those of us who visit an area for the first time and ‘assume’ the weather is seasonal (according to what one is accustomed to) may be in for a surprise. I think back to many years ago when as a young woman I visited San Francisco in August – it’s California, it’s warm and sunny, right? I took an open-weave shawl as my only coverup – it’s boiling where I live at that time of year – and I froze because only later did I learn that San Francisco is foggy and chilly and rainy in August and that September is much better! Since then I’ve learned . . . .

“Seasonal Guide to the Natural Year . . . ” Oh, thank you for this! Am unfamiliar with this but I just put it on my birthday wish list after googling it. Yes, the subtle changes most don’t see are still there; one just has to ‘know’ and to ‘look.’ I see it all the time, even with just the birds that come into my yard – their movements and activities are the initial harbingers of what’s to come..

Wearing AA Floral Nymphea as someone mentioned it a little while ago and I was reminded I have a sample. It’s nice, but not right for today. Fall is tough for perfume here in San Diego. It’s chilly in the morning, but then warms up during the day. So if I wear something “cold weather-ish” since it’s cool in the morning, it’s wrong by lunchtime. And alternately, something more warm weatherish, like this one doesn’t feel right now. I’ll live 😉

SOTD is Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile – I find it very comforting, and my stress level has been a little high lately (two new employees I’m helping to train, plus my house getting re-roofed). Had dinner last night with my parents and my niece, and my mom and I both smelled fabulous – she was in Coromandel (which is sweeter on her than on me), and I was in Caron Tabac Blonde. We kept getting up to smell each other, which amused my niece and embarrassed my dad. 🙂

It looks like it’ll be to be our last plus 20 day up here so I had a hard time choosing my SOTD. I wanted something light and summery. I ended up going with L’Eau de L’Artisan.

I’m hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I’ve had with two of my decants. I got them in the previous swapmeet. They are 10 ml each and I’d say their now around 70% used. About a month ago I noticed one of them had oil droplets floating in it. It seemed one of the ingredients had come out of solution. The other one was still fine but a few days later it separated too. If I dip the bottles in warm water and swirl them they go back into solution but within a minute they separate again. Has anyone else experienced this? It seems strange that they both did this around the same time.

I started off with Hermes Hiris this morning, which is just such an all around, easy, beautiful, shimmering scent to wear.

Then, the mail person delivered a small bottle of AG Ninfeo Mio, which I got for a very reasonable price, shipping took forever, but it did come from a world away. It is totally worth waiting for! Bright green, tangy wonderfullness!

I would say I don’t get lavender either- for me, it’s spikey green, effervescent citrus, soft woods, and a bit of sweet fig milk (if there is such a thing as fig milk). Lavender is totally MIA for me, but if you get that and enjoy it, so much the better for you! It almost seems a little bit gourmand to me, in a strange plant-like way.

I didn’t apply perfume until later today, since I was flying and don’t like to subject others in a confined space to my taste in perfume!

But I am now more than making up for my previous scentlessness by wearing three samples all at once. AG Folavril, which I do not care for at all…it smells like lettuce left too long in the crisper; Divine L’Ame Soeur, which is very pretty; and Olfactive Studio Ombre Indigo, which is a knock-your-socks-off incense. I will be giving this one a few more wearings, but so far, so good!

Still smell like Opus VI from last evening. I’m not falling for it but I don’t hate it either. It is ridiculously strong spicy amber for about 15 minutes then just…spice cabinet forever. I get none of the lovely animalicics after the opening but something slightly sour and dry-spicy hovers very close for 20 hours and counting. I tried it Friday evening too and, after almost asphyxiating my husband, had the same result. Like I had been locked in a spice cupboard until lightly permeated by the odor. It’s not like I actually WANT the opening to assault me all day but somewhere in between would be nice.

Wearing 31 Rue Cambon which y’all recommended as good for work. And it is, since I feel very crisp and efficient and mature and undaunted by my workload, but as with all Chanels it doesn’t fit me. Lovely as it is, it makes me feel more conservative than I am. So still hunting for work perfumes. Extreme sillage or wildness of expression not an issue.

I just had the same problem with Rue Cambon – I feel it’s a bit too big for a work scent. Have you tried Chanel Beige? I am currently in love with that scent – it’s so cheery. And I feel it’s perfect for work. My other work go-to is Cartier Basier Vole.
