Tuesday scent of the day 10/14

Posted by Robin on 14 October 2014 117 Comments

Kenzo fashion campaign

If you have the time, do tell us what fragrance you're wearing today!

I'm wearing Kenzo Amour.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/17, wear one of the perfumes included in Michael Edwards' Perfume Legends (I've added a complete list at the end of the book review), or wear any fragrance from 1992 or before.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing vintage Eau Sauvage today. We just got our first real cool front yesterday in Houston. Sadly I’m on my way to work and can’t enjoy it too much. Therefore I needed a happy smell today.

There are a fair number on that list that I’ve never tried either, and that are rarely mentioned by perfumistas … Ombre Rose, for instance, and the original Nina.

I loved the original Nina. I used to wear it waitressing when I was at uni. I’ve looked for it since then but it’s as rare as unicorn poop.

I surprised myself by having more than a few of them, albeit mostly in minis. I think of my collection as being very small, but I might be delusional. :)

I got my order of Amouage samples yesterday (women’s collection and library set). Since it’s warm out today I decided to try Ciel, which is really nice, but extremely sheer and light. Considering all I’d read about Amouage perfumes this took me by surprise. I was expecting something with a bit more substance (and sillage, it turned into a skin scent on me after an hour), but I can’t say it’s bad. I do like the light florals and even something slightly powdery. Not bad for a very humid and warm “Indian summer” sort of day.

Ciel is definitely one of the lighter scents…not representative of their later style (it pre-dated Christopher Chong, the brand’s current creative director)

Adding in case it helps…he joined Amouage in 2007. I think you’ll see a difference in style/consistency after that.

Thanks for that info. I knew Chong made quite a difference to the brand once he started there. I think I’ve heard more about him than the perfumes when reading about Amouage!
I’ve tried Journey and Honour so far, so wearing something so light as Ciel was a shocker, but I guess it makes sense since it’s and older one. It’s so light it’s like an EDT!

I rather like Ciel – it’s nice in the summer and reminds me a bit of Chanel Beige. If I had to choose, though, I’d prob go with Beige. I’m still working through decants of both so I’m good :)

Hi Jenkr. What a nice buy! Love Opus 1. Very green but still warm. Would love to know what you think. Also Ubar, my going-out-for-an-event choice – too big for the office – and Fate, which has all the Amouage markers but manages to stay within the boundaries of office good taste. Dia is, unfortunately, not office material. Almost killed a co-worker who clearly isn’t a perfume person with just a few dabs.

Oh, I am jealous. I’ve only tried Lyric Woman, Jubilation 25, and Epic Woman, and while I didn’t love all three, they did make me want to try them all. (You’ve made me move Ciel down on my list, although between the name and Maurice Roucel, I still want to love it.)

Edp is heavy on the dried fruits for me. It’s the same note that turns me off Daim Blonde.

I find it richer and warmer than the EDT, but I like them both. I initially bought a bottle of the EDP, but then liked the EDT so much, added a travel size (10 ml?) of that. I’m probably set for life

I’m also wearing Volutes edt (from a spray sample), also prompted by yesterday’s discussion. On me, the honeyed dried fruits soften seamlessly into the distinctive sweet tobacco note, which becomes more prominent as the scent progresses. I like the backstory and appreciate the composition, but I prefer swirls of woodsmoke, not tobacco (although Volutes is not terribly smoky), and there’s not enough ‘earth’ nor spices in this one to satisfy me. I remember trying the edp in the store and remember that it was heavier, richer and sweeter and that I preferred Volutes in the edt. I’ll pass on both, however; more left for those of you who love this!

I got a bottle of Jean Patou Ma Liberte on E-Bay about two years ago or so, and I am rationing it, as it smells wonderful and therefore might be the non-reformulated version. Lots of lavender and citrus really make their presence known.

Wearing Jaisalmer today, and received a shock when I realized that I’m almost out of it. That black metal bottle hid how much I had already used up and I didn’t realize how much of a staple it had become for me, although I remember that last winter I pretty much only wore this, La Fille de Berlin, and Ambre Russe. It looks like it will be the first full bottle I’ll have to replace.

I’m wearing Pink Molecule by ZarkoPerfume. I bought a sample after seeing the list of notes at https://nstperfume.com/2014/10/07/zarkoperfume-new-niche-line/. It starts off with elderflower and is soon joined by apricot. After two hours, the cream accord and dark trees begin to emerge, but it remains slightly fruity (the apricot). Everything, including the dark wood, is done with a light touch. It is not very sweet.

I think that I want a bottle, but I don’t want a gallon (meaning 100 mls) of it :-) I don’t see it at STC (they do have a couple of the Zarko frags) or TPC yet.

If you like MCMC Phoenix (I do), you might like Pink Molecule. Phoenix and Pink Molecule are kind of what I wanted Nectarine Blossom and Honey (Jo Malone) to be. Unfortunately, on my skin, the Jo Malone smells generic and harsh with no fruit or honey.

A note on the elderflower: I don’t have much experience with it. I’ve tried elderflower liqueur (Saint Germain), and the elderflower in Pink Molecule reminds me of the liqueur. Pink Molecule does not smell like booze, thank goodness.

Not at all too long, I agree with the others! I love it when people take the time to explain scents that I may not be familiar with; not just the notes but their personal responses as well, because fragrance appreciation is both personal taste and personal chemistry (besides the artistry/quality of its composition). You’ve made Pink Molecule sound intriguing and sample-worthy – I’m not familiar with elderflower as a note either. Thank you!

I enjoy reading people’s descriptions of WHY they like things. Glad I’m not alone :-) If they put Pink Molecule in the St. Germain bottle, it would boost sales. I saved the empty mini-bottle of the liqueur because it’s so pretty :-)

I’ve lightened up on how much I use of this…I think the tobacco leaf is so great with the orange blossom, but it does lean a bit too masculine for my nose as of late and when I spray it’s definitely overpowering.
Now I blot vs. spray and it’s just perfect.

Happy Tuesday! SOTD started off with Onda VdE, from my rapidly dwindling sample. Onda, I love you, but I cant afford you! So sad! I should have been born with a silver spoon in my mouth ;)

Then, just got my delivery of Hiris, which is just gorgeous in a whole different way. Seems like this would be good for hot or cold weather too. We had a “cold front” come through this neck of the woods and temps are supposed to plummet to low 80’s. Sheesh! Give me a break already!

Anyway, Hiris has been on my radar for a while and I found a small bottle relatively cheap. Plus it’s in the blue bottle, which I read in comments a while back will be discontinued (the bottle color and design, not the fragrance). So, even though it came from half a world away, I snapped it up and it is BEAUTIFUL! I will get a lot of use and enjoyment from this one :)

I’m wearing Carolina Herrera today, and a lovely tuberose/civet concoction it is!

I was also surprised to see how many Perfume Legends I own or have owned in the past. Of course, thirty years ago there were many fewer releases and it seems to me that the perfumers were able to take their time in developing formulations, so perhaps that’s why they are legendary today? Time, thoughtfulness, and quality ingredients?

No clients today so I’m wearing Tocca Colette layered over Violet orange blossom lotion from Royal Apothec to go with the warm and spring like weather.

Speaking of body lotion, I just took a chance on a big bottle of Amouage Memoir woman lotion from an online discounter. Has anyone used Amouage bath and body products and could comment on the quality? Also I have no idea what Memoir smells like and the reviews are a mixed bag -after buying, I learned it has the dreaded tuberose note which isn’t specifically listed. Oh dear, could be a blind blunder on my part and could end up being a swap item if it doesn’t work out. I think I’m having buyer’s remorse even before receiving the item!

Oh, I have not smelled the body lotion but Memoir is my favorite Amouage! And I don’t recall tuberose at all–I’ve only worn it a couple times so it could be there and I just didn’t notice but at least it’s not very prominent. Memoir is not very floral overall–more warm and spicy. Perfect for fall/winter! Don’t despair just yet, you may love it.

I have some Memoir lotion (from… Parfum1, I *think*) and it is wonderful – very rich and stays scented a long time on the skin.

I do hope you like it, because it does get very mixed reviews. I think I wore it 7 or 8 times before I realized how much I loved it. (It actually gets very mixed reviews in my house. Daughter hates it. Older son thinks it’s awesome. Hubby is neutral. Younger son wrinkles nose.) Don’t worry *too* much about the tuberose; it’s stealthy and, if I might guess, there’s also some jasmine in there hiding under all the spicy herbal leather chypre weirdness. I still can’t classify the thing, I just surrender to it.

While I have not tried any of them myself (or Memoir!), I know Musette over at perfumeposse loooooooooves the Amouage body products. I’m sure they will be very high quality.

Oh my word, what a lovely combination! I didn’t know about the Violet Orange Blossom Royal Apothic but those are two of my favorite things so I will have ot check it out. I really enjoy Colette too. I think you have made my fragrance choice for today!

Oh I’m so happy it inspired you! I usually don’t go for orange blossom notes but that lotion smells absolutely gorgeous with the citrus wood spice of Colette.

Another vote for Amouage lotions! I have a bottle of Dia hand lotion and it’s one of the best lotions I’ve ever tried! I’ve also tried their body lotion and it’s divine. Like others have mentioned, Memoir doesn’t smell floral to me – it’s warm and spicy. Enjoy!

Today I’m wearing Lolita Lempicka Minuit Couture Noir or whatever it’s called in the gold and black box and bottle. It’s the one that smells hardly like the others with way more emphasis on the anis and myrrh. It’s wonderful and I can still smell it on my wrists and clothes. Though I’m about to venture out into the rain to do a quick bit of yardwork so will probably have to refresh when I come back inside.

This sounds fantastic – LL is one of my favorite lines. I love how the scent lingers, especially on yesterday’s T-Shirt/jammies.

Do you know if the Couture Noir different from the L`Eau de Minuit?

Hi CM! I think the Eau de Minuit/Midnight interpretations, at least as far as I’ve experienced, just feel like stronger versions of the original LL. The black and gold bottle/packaging, while still related to LL, feels like quite a different perfume. More sophisticated, much dryer and lighter on the flowers up top and the drydown is less powdery. I love all the LL variations I’ve tried, but the Couture Noir or whatever it is really is gorgeous and worth the slightly higher price. I think mine was around $75 or so, and there are fewer of this particular version around as far as I know.

Lmk if you’d like me to send you a sample if you’re curious to try without blind buying, though a blind buy would be quite understandable if you like anis and myrrh quite a lot. I don’t even like anis all that much but it just works in this one. ;) mds4pak at sbcglobal dot net

No SOTD yet today, but I am still catching whiffs of my scent yesterday, planted in my head by Robin, of Gaiac 10. It was my first time trying it and it’s not at all what I expected but I really loved it. I expected it to be really dark and resinous, but it’s very light, although still very woodsy! A lovely scent and I got a lot of compliments on it.

As for today, I’m not sure yet. I’m going to put on something fun as a reward to myself for cleaning…It’s cold and rainy, so maybe Apres L’Ondee.

I know! I hear it’s hard to get your hands on too. I liked it a lot, but it wasn’t love, so I am happy to use up my sample and move on. If it were MUCH cheaper I would be very tempted though…

Yeah, even when the city exclusives are available worldwide in September, to think of paying $115 + tax + shipping for 15ml?! The juice would really have to be life-changing…

That said, I’ve recently found my way to a Facebook split group (International Fragrance Split Assoc), which has the city exclusive decants at a much more reasonable price (e.g. 15ml for $50–not nothing but not quite so crazy), so if you decided you did need a bit more, that’s a somewhat more plausible way to do it. I’m still waiting on my first split to fill up, so I can’t yet speak from personal experience, but I hear others have been happy with that group.

While looking at the Perfume Legends list last night, I realized I could do a whole week, from now until Friday! Hooray! I was a little surprised. Today is Joy EDP. I like it, but I could never wear it as a signature scent. It’s just a little too indolic.

Yesterday I reached for JHAG Miss Charming, and it was a very very wrong choice, cloying and intrusive behind a smiling facade. So today I went for the “grumpiest” scent in the cabinet: Etro Palais Jamais. Felt much better :).

Came home to the arrival of a SL Clair de musc mini. Very nice :).

Knew it was going to be a difficult day and reached for the sweet incense cherry blossom of Ururu’s Tokyo Cafe. Not sure why incense/cherry/dark scents are so comforting but it helped. And today, unlike other tests, it lasted 4+ hours.

SOTD is Sweet Anthem Owl. I’m trying my sample for the first time, and really enjoying it. Warm, spicy, just slightly sweet. For the first hour or so it didn’t grab me, but my favorite perfumes tend to be the ones that smell better after I’ve been wearing them for a while.

Finally read the list of Perfume Legends, and three of the four perfumes I went through bottles of before falling down the rabbit hole are on it: Tabu, Opium, and Ysatis. Suddenly I feel as though I have excellent taste.

Le Labo Lys 41 today, which I enjoyed. In the arvo I wore Ylabg 49 to try to like it, but oakmoss.. sigh… I’m trying to like oakmoss, and galbanum, but they still smell like musty ol’ swamp to me :-(

It might be a bit late for anyone to chime in so if I need to I’ll ask again tomo, but I have a question about Perfume Legends.
Victoria’s review on BdJ mentions Bellodgia, and quotes from it, but it isn’t on ‘the list’. Are there more that have been included at different times that aren’t in the final copy?

Snow? No, not here. I’ve never even seen snow! :-0 I have to admit i havent seen much news in the last few days so i hope that everything is ok.. The eastern states are more likely to get snow and flooding, west Australia is much hotter and drier.
Thanks for your concern though Nozknoz, this community really is very lovely.

    I really love Kenzo Amour!

I’m wearing a bit of Krazia Krizia, which I bought unsniffed after people were talking about it last week, and going back and reading the Bois de Jasmin review. It can be found for under $30, which is astonishing. Probably the best bargain ever, aside from Basile, which I got for under $10.
