Tuesday scent of the day 9/30

Posted by Robin on 30 September 2014 168 Comments

L'Artisan Traversée du Bosphore

Another Tuesday, and September is almost gone! What's your scent of the day?

And if you've discovered anything new and great lately (anything!) do tell us about that too.

I'm wearing L'Artisan Traversée du Bosphore.

Reminder: this Friday, 3 October, is Purgatory Basket Friday...find a sample you haven't been able to make up your mind about, give it a second chance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

I wore Traversée yesterday, such a wonderful scent. I’m wearing Bois de Paradis today, a little loud but quite wonderful nevertheless.

I bought some Traversee to Turkey with me so I could traverse the Bosphorus in it 😀 As much as I like it I only wore it the once as it was too warm, and I found Ninfeo Mio (figs) and Roma Imperiale (Roman ruins) suited the place better. Is that odd? Hehe

I took Philosykos to Greece and could only wear Cristalle Eau Verte there – it was just that hot! Ironic though…

I brought Traversée du Bosphore to Hawaii a couple of weeks ago (it worked well on my previous trip there) but never got to wear it this time. For any special reason, I just didn’t feel like it. But I still think it’s great.

TdB is very cozy, very pretty. I’m waiting for the perfect day to bust it out! It’s one of the few L’APs that I own (along with Drole de Rose).

I tried some of it flankers, and quickly decided that Eau de Merveilles is not for me. Then, finally, because everybody here seems to like it, I gave the real thing a try. WOW! Eau de Merveilles is really marvelous! So, now, I am also planing to buy a bottle. Is there anything one needs to be careful about; reformulations or other tricks?

You know, it’s probably not even that bad for a quality niche fragrance. (Trigger warning: $165 for 60 ML.) But way higher than my previous top! Also, unfortunately, not one that’s likely to come around at much of a discount on any regular basis.

I have not tested LFDB as thoroughly but from my limited memory it was rather edgier, with more dramatic dark bits. What’s special to me about Rose Cut is how smooth it feels, which is not a quality I remember associating with LFDB. I hope that helps!

I’ve used up my sample and I still don’t know what to make of it.
It’s actually quite frustrating. It is not wowing me, but I still want to smell it and even, dare I say, buy it.
It’s subtle and very wearable. I find it pretty and not too sweet for an orange blossom.
I wonder if my love of the original is hugely influencing my feelings toward this. Could be.

I love Traversée du Bosphore. It will have to be brought back into rotation as soon as this fall heat wave is over.
SOTD is my work regular Eau de Courrèges.
At some point this week, I am expecting my new (unsniffed) A*Men Pure Wood. I might even let myself be tempted by the A*Men Pure Coffee re-release…

Continuing on my Ormonde Jayne adventure, I’ve got Frangipani on one arm and Orris Noir on the other. Ta’if is still my favorite of the four I’ve tried thus far, but all are wonderful.

Also – I am so enjoying this beautiful box they came in….not usually as concerned about packaging as the scent, but oh how satisfying it is when your scents come in a pretty box…

Wearing Indigo from Magnetic Scent and this is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever tried– it’s sharp from a distance and is more of a soft floral on my left wrist and the hyacinth is starting to come up while my right wrist is sharper and for the first couple of hours was sort of inky/animalic/indolic almost but not quite fecal which is fading now. It’s like I’m wearing two different perfumes which is a very bizarre effect

While decanting some for you, I got some on my fingertips which is a spicy hyacinth. My left wrist is now a soft floral while my right is a plush dark colored fur with purple tones. Never encountered a perfume that smells radically different depending on where I apply it.

    Hello!
A bunch of decants arrived today (yay!), so have been trying:
    Corsica Furiosa (yum)
    Osmanthus Interdite (yum)
Vanilia (yum, and boo for discontinuation)
    Lys 41 (yum)
Eau d’Hermes (hmm. Not sure yet)
Ylang 49 (er, not so yum)
Heure Exquise (hmm. Not so yum either)

Chypre-ish frags are the ones I’m having difficulty liking. They still smell old fashioned and musty to my nose but I’m still waiting for that ‘A-HA!’ moment where I ‘get’ them. Hopefully that will happen because I don’t feel I can truly wear my perfumista badge until it does :-/

I’m really enjoying the unseasonably warm (and dry!) September. I spent so much of my early summer studying and sitting the exams that I appreciate this lovely weather even more than usual. Anyway, I was in Philosykos yesterday and I’m continuing the fig theme with Premier Figuier today.

I discovered that I got a new job yesterday so that’s pretty wonderful. I mentioned an interview a couple of weeks ago and got some good luck wishes from fellow NSTers. They worked pretty well since I ended up with two job offers and could pick the one that’s more interesting and better paid.

Hmm, based on what you own and your testing notes for the last 500 fragrances, I think sample #219, which is the one I sprayed between your shoulder blades, you will find to be an absolute scrubber

I got a random sample of Gin Fizz earlier this month and it made me smile for smelling exactly like its name promised. Apparently a re-launch of 1955 perfume inspired by Grace Kelly? Not sure I can see her wearing it for some reason, but I am totally behind the idea of re-launching old perfumes 🙂

Today is my SO’s birthday, and the only two scents I’ve worn that he’s ever mentioned liking are Mythique and Clair de Musc, so I think it will be one of those today. It’s not that he doesn’t like scents, but he can hardly smell anything. It’s weird to me that these would be the two he would like, since they’re both so light, but that is the case. And they’re two of my favorites as well!

Donna Karan Black Cashmere. I wasn’t sure at first that I liked this. The opening is sharp and the sweet elements in the wood seemed kind of bubblegum-ish on my skin. I found myself reaching for my sample a lot more often than I expected, though, and have since not only gotten over the bubblegum thing, but decided I really like wearing this one.

I emptied my bottle of Prada Candy over the weekend, and so I’m allowing myself one new full bottle to replace it. Even though fall is just starting here, I’m not really sure I need another exclusively cool-weather scent, though, so I’m torn on Black Cashmere (especially since I’m trying to make more of an effort to be office-friendly).

Wearing TDC’s de Bachmakov today. I’m jealous that you can wear Traversée du Bosphore, Robin… I tried to like it, it sounds like something I should like, I like La Belle Helene, which some people say is similar, but there was something just too sweet about ii to me. Plenty of others, though, I guess.

It is cold and windy here in Minneapolis and I need to do a few things outside so SL Daim Blonde in on my wrists. I haven’t rotated in my really cold weather frags yet (I only have so much room on my dressing table) but todays cold blast means I need to get my act together and switch out. Daim Blonde is the rare bottle that gets year round use.

This is the one SL, besides La fille de Berlin, that I want to try. Well, try again. I sampled it a long time ago, and made a note that I liked it, but I don’t remember it at all. But I’ve read that Daim Blonde is a much richer suede plum than Bottega Veneta (which I concede is very sheet IMHO). Do you have any opinions on this?

I will agree with that opinion. I have both and find myself turning to Daim Blonde over and over all year long. It is much suede-ier LOL on my skin. Bottega has leather, that at least on me, disappears too quickly and then disappears overall. If I had to do over I’d just go with SL. I find that Diam Blonde lasts at least 5-6 hours on me and BV doesn’t even come close. Add in the richer leather smell and it’s a winner.

My usually beloved Theo Fennell scent, but today it’s kinda funky. Like the funk from whence the music gets its name. Inappropriate for my day of hospital waiting rooms. Don’t know if it’s the Minneapolis chill and sweaters?
I put some moisturizer on top, maybe that amped up the funk?

I pulled a couple of possibilities from the purgatory basket (TM Robin) and am wearing Cristalle edp. It is both lovely and meh, if that makes sense. It smells like quality ingredients and there is nothing wrong with it, but it doesn’t have that extra something to push it over the line either way. Still, perfectly nice and presentable.

This morning I started out with AG Musc Nomade, but think I will put on a little bit of Montale Patchouli Leaves since it seems like it would layer nicely over MN and also because it’s such a chilly afternoon. It is such a cozy smell and my older kids actually really like it. I was cuddling the baby with it on last week and so a wee bit rubbed off in her hair and when my older daughter took her, she and the boys kept smelling her and saying how good she smelled even though I think she smells beautiful all by herself. So patchouli perfumes, for me, often make me think of my kids and they feel a bit like a “family perfume” if such a thing existed. 😉

I kind of liked Musc Nomade but for me it wears better in warmer weather. Also at some point I realized that three perfumes from that collection – Musc Nomade, Ambre Fétiche and Myrrhe Ardente – just do not smell different enough for me to use them all. And since I own Ambre Fétiche bottle my decants of the other two don’t get much use. I should probably try them again…

Continuing my attempt to smell everything I can find locally, today’s SOTD is a sample of Shalimar. (I’ve resisted opening the worm-hole of internet purchasing of samples, for fear of where it will take me.) But I’m having a hard time getting a sense of Shalimar because my scarf smells heavily of yesterday’s sample, Atelier Cologne’s Silver Iris. They actually smell pretty nice in proximity.

Big, yes, but I like them that way. I can’t really wear this scent in the heat – just too much of a muchness. Eau de Dashing Grandpa wore off by mid-morning (it’s cologne, after all), so I’ve dabbed on some vanilla oil from the health food store that I keep stashed at work. It did fade rather soon, so I can’t wait to get home to get some more on skin. I needed a bel respiro – been working very hard this month, and just submitted a project end report. Respiro sigh!

Very late to the party and have neglected these SOTD polls.

I am unlikely to participate in the Purgatory Basket Friday because I tend to be polarized when it comes to perfume (usually anyway) so the ones I don’t like / hate on first smell do not stand a second chance. I don’t feel like I am missing out because there are just so many perfumes left to try…why agonize over something? Therefore, I will be doing the “wear a perfume you discovered in a blog” over the next two weeks (yes, I am weak). I will post links when I can (i.e. when I am sitting in front of my computer instead of tapping my comments on an iPhone).

Today, SOTD = Oriza Legrand Chypre Mousse

Earth, mushroomy, green, spicy, weird (that’s an ingredient, no?)

    http://www.kafkaesqueblog.com/2013/11/04/oriza-l-legrand-chypre-mousse-horizon-reve-dossian/

    Yesterday’s SOTD = Papillon Angelique

I could absolutely rock a FB of this but come swap meet time, I’ll be looking for someone who may want to swap for a similar amount of Anubis.
