Monday scent of the day 9/22

Posted by Robin on 22 September 2014 107 Comments

ThreeAsFour fashion

Hope your Monday is going smoothly so far! What's your fragrance today?

I'm still on last week's discontinued theme...I'm wearing Curated by Colette ThreeAsFour. It's a wonderful fizzy ginger-iris-vetiver and perfect for this time of the year.

Reminder: this Friday, 26 September, will be Uncle Serge Day...wear something by Serge Lutens.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Wow, Curated sounds wonderful! I don’t remember ever hearing about it before.
    My SOTD is Vanille 44.

It was never sold outside of Colette in Paris, to my knowledge. I can’t remember now how I got a decant…

I’m wallowing in Delrae’s Amoureuse. It’s big and beautiful. Easily my favourite Delrae, although I’ve yet to try Wit.
Saturday was devoted to Manoumalia and yesterday to L’Impacte de pour un homme.

Well, I’m sort of jumping the gun. She asked people on Twitter one day if she should do travel sizes, and if so, spray or rollerball.

I love Amoureuse and really need to get some. A Travel spray size would be so perfect so maybe I’ll just wait. I have a bottle of Wit that I’ll prob never use up (it’s pretty, though) but travel size would’ve been perfect!

I love Amoureuse. I wore it last night and today. I have to be careful with it. If I wear too much in the evening when I am even a bit tired, Amoureuse makes me so sleepy. I almost feel drugged. It’s amazing!

I’m wearing Heeley Cardinal today, which was instant love for me. It had just a little extra resinous sweetness that some other incense scents seem to be missing and without which I get a little queasy. Unfortunately, my SO HAAAAATES (all caps) it to the point where he politely pleaded I don’t wear it around him so I’m thinking twice about buying a full bottle. Sigh. Maybe a large decant for workdays when I won’t see him for a long stretch?

It totally sucks when a partner hates a fragrance you like. It doesn’t happen to me often. My DH hates No 5, but I think I’ve trained him not to notice anymore b/c I’ll wear it anyway – just apply far away or when he’s at work so he misses the offending top notes.

I finally tried a decant of vintage Mitsouko extrait and was a bit disappointed: it’s much richer and plusher than the EDT I’ve been wearing for a few years, but also very tame compared to the wild spikiness I’m used to. (The ten-year-old bottle I have actually seems to have more, or at least more obvious, oakmoss than the vintage extrait — is that even possible?) Maybe I need to wear it more, but for now I think the parfum, although beautiful, is not thrilling and amazing and savage the way the EDT is.

I find the Mitsouko extrait to be very subdued and close to the body commpared even to the edp. I like it when I’m at work b/c the sillage is lower. I get more spicy carnation out of the extrait too. I like them both, but the edp is certainly more bold.

After wearing all of the different iterations of Mitsouko for about, oh, 100 years, I too figured out that I prefer the edt. The extrait is heavier on the base notes (as extraits are) and I prefer to get more of the top and middle notes. I think it lets the oakmoss/bergamot combination shine more.

I have an FB of Mitsouko extrait that I think was created just prior to the most recent iteration. I remember reading reviews of the newest revamp and perfumistas all saying it was much better than past reformulations…. Whew. All that to say… I really like my less than the best, ostensibly, extrait. But it is a skin scent in the sense that it seems to fuse with my skin and smells like what I would smell like if I smelled like a cashmere shawl of under-ripe peach, spices, and labdanum.

Yes, I think Eau Premiere goes on with a big burst, just long enough to get you out the door, but really wears as a skin scent. (For most of the day, for me!) I like that effect, but YMMV of course.

That surprises me. I’m reading this now, hours since it was in full effect, so I can’t analyze it while discussing, but I didn’t get that impression from it at all. I don’t tend to like overly sweet perfumes, and my nose didn’t pick up on anything like that.

But my nose might be off…

Those cobalt bottles with the Japanese iris blue tissue paper in the orange boxes were love at first sight for me, and, happily, I love the perfume just as much. Please take note, however, that the recently revised bottles are no longer blue. What is Hermes thinking?!

Fortunately, their folly is our gain, as the old blue bottles are now showing up at the discounters. ;-)

Ooh, can I pick your brain about these different bottles, esp re: how/whether they relate to reformulations? I got a decant in a swap fairly recently, and while it’s very pretty, I’m always baffled when folks talk about Hiris as a very rooty iris…which makes me suspect I’m smelling a reformulated version. Wondering whether these blue bottles are a way to get at the older stuff? On the other hand, maybe I’m totally mistaken and it hasn’t been reformulated at all? Would love to hear what you or others might know about this!

Hiris launched in 1999 in the blue bottle. The clear bottle is very recent, so a blue bottle isn’t necessarily very old.

Nonetheless, I don’t think of Hiris as particularly rooty; that would be SL Iris Silver Mist, wouldn’t it? I think of Hiris as lighter, as most Hermes perfumes are, although not as light as the Hermessences.

I remember a friend who really liked the original Magie Noire and Feminite du Bois when they were both sold in the department stores. She was certainly on to something! It was definitely not my thing when I was in my 20s – it took me a long time to understand greens and woods – but I’m glad I found it now. It is just so well composed, so smooth for being so dark and rich. I have a current bottle from a few years ago and then managed to score bargains on two vintage bottles, so I’m set for a long time.

I overslept this morning – ugh- so I just dipped into the untried sample bowl rather than taking the time to rummage through the horde. I pulled out La Cautiva from Argentine house Fueguia. This is the first scent I’ve tried from them. This is a vanilla-black currant super sweet gourmand that dries down into the usual musk. Nicely made, but very much sweeter than what I’d ordinarily wear. It reminds me of CK’s Euphoria, only with higher quality ingredients and much less forceful.

They seem to be the oils, which I didn’t expect. I couldn’t wait to try one, so I picked Oud. I figured a spritz on the back of my hand wouldn’t clash (too much) with the FdB. It’s interesting.. Not exactly but: apparently people on Fragrantica have voted that it reminds them of Eau Sauvage and Cristalle. Then I realised it vaguely reminded me of Metal. So I guess it just reminds of the retro green floral/chypre genre, as it shares notes with those.
I decided I will get a bottle next spring. It’s inexpensive too.

I doubt anyone will beat my combo today. I’m making samples so I’ve got on some Chamade extrait, some Guerlain Terracotta Voile d’Ete (I need to wear this more), and I am still wafting some of the SSS Amber/Incense that I’m testing for Laurie. Note that it is a natural and I applied it yesterday afternoon!

It was a close call between Shalimar and Havana Vanille. In the end I chose Havana Vanille. My mother decided that she was going to steal my bottle of Courtesan and wear it today, now I want to wear it. Maybe tomorrow.

Today is Estee Lauder Private Collection. It was the first thing I grabbed from my care package baggie of samples (from a glorious perfume fairy) that seemed like it would work for today. Applied more heavily than the last time, and I’m enjoying it much more.

Day one of Serge Week: I am wearing de Profundis which I smell as an earthy green floral with plenty of incense and a smaller dose of woods and earth and medium sweet. There is a thread of metal running through it, too. I can see how this could be a funeral bouquet with fresh green hothouse blooms, some incense, some earth with the metal backbone of an arranged display or floral wreath. As it develops it becomes the scent of soap, purse leather and the lingering smoke, earth and bit of leafiness–as if you’ve moved from graveside to a warm room with dessert table set up just within sniffing distance. It ends with all of the smells that might linger plus a hint of animal funk, as if you are home smelling of the last of your ablutions, the lingering smells of the ceremony (bitter greens and incense) and the last bite of pie (vanilla and wood).

I am not sure I love it, but it never bores me. Probably more decant worthy than FB, though.

I think I might make this a Serge week. I’m wearing Cedre today, which seems to be as much about tuberose as cedar. I’m liking it – the cedar seems to make the tuberose more dressed down and casual.

I need to dig that one out. I haven’t smelled it on a long time. I remember it smelling like some sort of fantastical spicy floral brew.

      Hey Jirish,
I sold a bottle of Cedre on eBay to someone named Jirish. If it wasn’t you that would be really strange. Even stranger if it was! In any case, it’s a gorgeous Serge.

Traveling for work. SOTD is Frederic Malle Iris Poudre. It was really hard to decide when I had to get up so early – I’m not a morning person and I feel awful when I have to get up much earlier than 7. Nothing really smells good before 7!

My sample of Feu d’Issey, which I understand better now that it’s on the sleeve of my t-shirt, and not just on skin… an herby, milky aura.

Following Robin’s recommendation from the other day, I just received carded samples of Paul Smith Story. To my disappointment, the juice has turned. From what I can smell, it seems it could be very nice, but I cannot really tell with certainty … The packaging is very cute.
I wonder whether others have experienced that Story tends to turn easily.
ThreeAsFour sounds also great but no samples of that one around …

What a shame. My bottle has held up quite well, but I’d be wary of buying it now.

AG Eau d’Hadrien. Uncomplicated easy-wearing and elegant – seemed right for an almost overslept Monday, grab-and-go to face the week.

SOTD is Eau des Merveilles from a tiny sample vial. It probably needs to be sprayed with a heavier hand than the sample allows – it became faint quickly, and on me the drydown is nearly identical to BV Eau Legere, with slightly less than EL’s already-slight scratchiness.

Another oldie – today I am wearing some Boucheron edp I got at the grocery store. It smells nice, even tho it is more active on my watchband than on my skin….

I’m testing Costes (1) for the first time, another pick-up from the STC Friday decant sales. The top notes were a little too fresh for my taste, with the coriander and bay, but as it’s drying it’s becoming pretty addictive!

My bottle of Shalimar Parfum Initial L’eau came today – a blind buy that I’m really liking so far. It’s just really *pretty* without being too straightforward or boring. Luckily I didn’t expect anything like my beloved original Shalimar – they’re such distant cousins I’m not even picking up any vanilla in this one!

Wearing ELO Vierges et Toreros. Still going strong after seven hours, as ELOs usually do. Don’t wear it too often, but its tenacity is inspiring me to get through the day.

SSS Rose Musc, still going strong since around 10:30 this morning. ;) It’s so perfect this time of year and I love how it gently clings to my clothes.

JM English Pear and Freesia. It was accidentally sent to me in an online order but I didn’t have to return it. Unfortunately it was the worst JM I could think of getting for free and have attempted to sell it a couple of times, but as seems to happen to me, over time my tastes change, and now 2 years later I’m thinking it might be quite nice as a spring scent.

Had to run some errands near a niche perfume shop so popped in and tried Amouage Journey and Piguet Jeunesse. Journey was a bit leathery to start but was a lovely drydown. Jeunesse started really nice but dried down too sweet.
