Thursday scent of the day 8/14

Posted by Robin on 14 August 2014 125 Comments

Guerlain Jicky, revolution banner

What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Jicky Eau de Toilette (but as usual, not from that bottle). I smell fantastic.

Reminder: this Friday, August 15, wear something by Guerlain. We'll do this again in winter, so don't feel like you have to wear Shalimar if it's too hot for Shalimar. The following Friday, August 22, wear something beachy, or anything you think of as "a vacation in a bottle".

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Daim Blond today. Feeling rather leathery.

I need to try Jicky, because I suspect you smell fabulous, Robin.

I did not love it the first time I smelled it…also worth trying all 3 concentrations if you can find them, because the emphasis in each is quite different.

Both, and the extrait if you can! (Although finding a tester is not easy) I like the EdT & the extrait best, but yesterday Dawn said she likes the EdP best, so your mileage may vary :-)

I do love the EDP the best. Even though Jicky no matter what the concentrtion is hard to find but I find the EDP the hardest to find for a reasonable price. I have a small spray decant, the only reason I won’t get the extrait is the price tag. But it is worth a try.

Early this morning I sprayed from a sample of Xerjoff JTC Shunkoin, and oh, it is not good, like a cheap, synthetic version of SL Rahät Loukoum. (I’ve tried three from the JTC line so far and haven’t liked any of them.) When I couldn’t stand it any more I showered it off and put on something decent, which is to say Hermes Ambre Narguilé.

She’s the one who sent me her samples when she was done with them! I wish I liked them more, considering the price and the trouble she took to send them to me, and maybe there’s a hidden treasure, but so far nothing.

They really should be a lot better than they are, considering the price, but we know that cost is no index of quality (look at YR Secrets d’Essences — a third as much even at full price and inestimably better).

I’ve never tried Jicky on skin. I always get distracted by the L’Heure Bleue Parfum at the Guerlain counter.

I haven’t picked a fragrance yet but it might be Iris Silver Mist. I like it best in the summer and it is hot today in Houston!

On an unrelated note, I bought some fresh tuberose and man, what a knock-out scent! I wish they smelled so good on my skin!

My decant went bad. The guy put it in a plastic atomizer. My fault for leaving it in there. It wasn’t a huge decant, so not too big a loss. I think perfume lasts longer in the original bottle. Plastic decants are the worst.

Ooh where did you get fresh tuberose? I saw some one day at Whole Foods (the one on Bellaire), about a year or so ago. I didn’t buy it right away because I was going back to my office and wouldn’t have anything to put it in until I got home. And when I went back it was gone. I was kicking myself for not buying it when I saw it, and they haven’t had it again.

I was gonna suggest CM. They had some at the one here a couple weeks ago but D said he’d get a headache if we had to drive home with it. I have actually seen it recently at my regular HEB (which happens to have a great floral dept) so if there is a nice one nearby you might try them.

I do love Jicky, but it is so hard to find. I ordered two small decants. One for the EDT and one for the EDP. I’m trying to judge which one works best on my skin, and hopefully I’ll see it at a store soon near me really soon. If not, I’ll be traveling through the Miami airport, and maybe they’ll have it there?? Hoping!

Today I’m wearing Atelier’s Sous le toit de Paris, and did a few extra sprays and for that I’m quite happy!

Stopped by Aedes de Venustas yesterday and tried their newest, Oeillet Bengale, and thought it was really gorgeous. It’s a rose that with the spices comes off as a carnation. Very pretty and lasted a good long time on me after I sprayed some.

    On my list it goes!

    SOTD is Sel de Vetiver.

I went to Barneys to try perfumes yesterday for the first time ever. My experience was mostly positive and I may have gone a little bit crazy. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of telling one of the sales assistants that I didn’t buy many full bottles and I got decants instead, and he was not quite so helpful after that. Oh well, I learned my lesson :/ If only all the perfume houses offered reasonably sized (and priced!) bottles!!!

I expect the companies have done the math, or just don’t care, but you might think they would have learned something from L’Artisan and Hermes. I would buy a LOT of things in half-ounce bottles if they were available (and my current moratorium on new purchases would not exist).

I have an old Jicky eau de cologne in the “dial” bottle. I opened it this morning and then put it down while I was reaching for a cocktail straw to apply it. Suddenly, I was stunned by the impression that an animal had defecated under a nearby stack of books and magazines – how that could happen in a high-rise condo?! Then I realized I had just let the civet out. :-)

(Not to deter anyone – that impression was immediately replaced by by the frisson of fresh lavender and citrus, coumarin and vanillin, herbs and roses.)

I bought it on ebay from a seller who told me she was happy to find someone who wanted it, because it had been sitting around “under the rocking chair.” I thought to myself, that’s no place for Jicky!

That is awesome! You know you are a fragonerd if someone writes about civet, and interest is peaked :D With all the talk of Jicky today, I realized I’ve never put it on skin. I’ve always bypassed it for Mitsy, and my struggles to find the perfect vintage of that grande dame. I will go and search out a tester of Jicky this weekend. Enjoy your vintage EdC. It sounds wonderful! Be well.

    Happy Friday Eve everyone.

I’m wearing an oldie but goodie today – Love Comes From Within from Sarah Horowitz Thran. It’s a very light amber with clove and carnation that stays close to the skin. As a confirmed amber lover who hesitates to wear the big “bombs” in hot weather, I appreciate the light, powdery nature of this scent as my amber ‘fix’ during the summer heat.

A recent stop at a Brooks Brothers outlet store reminded me that somewhere I had a mini of their scent, New York for Ladies. Found it and that’s my SOTD. Luckily (for me) the tuberose peaks out only gently from amidst the other florals and the drydown is soft and woodsy. It smells cool, clean, classic and elegant, and I can see it adding a dash of femininity to a woman in a pinstripe suit (does anyone wear those anymore?) The bottle, even though a mini, is pale pink and lovely, and I shall keep it for those travel occasions when I need to be ‘ladylike’ while city-visiting.

I don’t have any Brooks Brothers suits and I’ve come to the conclusion that if a woman is using the pinstripe to look slimmer, she does not have the right body shape to make the suit flattering on
      her. ;-)

      Too catty, no?

Wearing MPG Bahiana today. My decant is almost empty and I’d like to clear some out (I have so many and they all look the same, so I forgot what I have), so trying to finish it up. It’s nice enough and fun, perfect for summer, but shortlived and nothing I need a full bottle of.

    SOTD Bvlgari Black.
I can’t remember the last time I went shopping with my dad but somehow we found our way into Nordstrom Rack during his visit with my family last week. I spotted a bottle of Black and despite my self imposed moratorium on all purchases, I couldn’t resist. As I got to the counter my dad jumped in and bought it for me, saying he doesn’t get to buy me gifts anymore. Now I smell fabulous, and will think of my Dad whenever I wear it. Sigh…I’m so happy.

Kai is my SOTD. It’s the original oil, light green gardenia and tuberose, soapy clean, which is pretty and works well in the 100+ heat here. I like the way the oil wears very close to the body. Stay cool, and be well :D

Agree – LT called Grossmith Shem-el-Nessim, “an enthusiastic copy” of 1905 Coty L’Origan and recommended it to all who would like to know what that smelled like.

I officially live in a fragrance desert. I could not find Guerlain Vetiver at the local mall. Everywhere that I checked had “something better”. One SA even suggested that Vetiver had been discontinued and replaced with L’homme Ideal. She pulled the “I’ve worked in men’s fragrance for ten years” line to back up her proclamation that L’Homme Ideal is the best fragrance ever created. I told her I didn’t care for it. She stared at me like I had two heads.

I don’t really think that’s very unusual…Guerlain is very poorly stocked in most US malls, and even local stores (near me) that have Guerlain counters (NM, Nordstrom) have a really crappy selection of the scents. Frankly I think most perfumistas overestimate how popular the brand is here.

You’re probably right. When the average person wants to spend that kind of money on perfume they most likely will look to Chanel instead of Guerlain. Still, I just had some idea that this particular one would be easier to find. I guess that’s the norm outside a few of the larger cities.

Our 2 Guerlain counters have minimal offerings too, but I find they tend to rotate. Shalimar and Vetiver have been random guest appearances, as was Jicky not too long ago. I wish I’d had the $ to get some (I want the parfum) as it has now all vanished and is so hard to find. That space is now just Insolence and Idylle…

In keeping with the plan of wearing from decants, I got into my 3ml bit of Penhaligon’s Eau Sans Pareil (the rerelease… which I think is discontinued again already). Such a nice light chypre thing – had to take all three kids to the dentist today (two cleanings, plus one kid having 3 baby teeth removed), and I smelled good.

This is Shalimar with all the good bits amplified. I used 4 sprays from my FB and I smell terrific. It reminds me of Chergui.

I wore Lys 41 today and got complimented multiple times! This was my first time wearing it, and while it’s lovely, I’m not sure yet if it fits me. I am terrible at taking perfume compliments, too! They always make me feel like I’m wearing too much…

Today I tried ELdO Josephine Baker. It was a lovely spicy thing with lots of cinnamon, but surprisingly for spice and ELdO, it was incredibly short-lived and wore close to the skin. I brought my decant with me and topped up 6 times during my shift but it was pretty much gone by home time

Today will be Jicky EDT from a circa ’90s tester and just a touch of the real thing: the perfume itself that I splurged on nearly 5 years ago this month.
