Monday scent of the day 6/2

Posted by Robin on 2 June 2014 125 Comments

crown-advert

Happy Monday! If you've a spare minute, do share your scent of the day, and tell us what the weather is like where you are. We're expecting a sunny day with a high of 79 ºF; I'm wearing a dab of Crown Perfumery Eau de Russe.

Reminder: this Friday, June 6, let's all try to wear something by Chanel. The following week will be Friday the 13th — wear your own version of 'Eau de Protection', i.e. something that brings you good luck or otherwise makes you feel safe and happy.

SOTD is Gianfranco Ferre for Man. The weather is cloudy, humid, chance of rain with thunderstorms, same as the previous 3-4 days. 🙂

It is a new-to-me bottle I got in a swap and I think it’s the reissued one from 2011 or so… I’ve had samples of the original one from 2007 and I can’t tell the difference between them, although someone with a more discerning nose might be able to!

Oh, my mistake….totally forgot they’d reissued it! Was mostly curious because my decant of Crown Eau de Russe ought to be long spoiled, but in fact it’s gotten deeper and better. So funny how sometimes that happens when other, much newer and better packaged things go bad in a few years.

Finally sunny and supposed to be about 78 degrees… I am wearing Cartier Baiser Vole edp b/c its so pretty and cheerful. It’s one of the few light florals that I thoroughly enjoy from top to bottom, and one of the few lilies that I truly enjoy. Double score!

I usually use “the stick it in the freezer for a while” method, and it has worked fine for me. However, here are some other options as well as a Basenotes discussion on the subject.

First day back in the office after a week in San Diego (conference combined with a family visit) – I meant to spray on Safran Troublant, but thanks to jet lag and poorly organized decants, I accidentally put on Santal Majascule (and 1 too many sprays to boot!). So I smell “wrong” today. Oh well, better luck tomorrow.

Is 3 sprays over-spraying with SM? It is dense but does not have huge projection on me…

Also, with its dark cocoa accord I do think it would work for formal – if that’s any consolation! You may be providing everyone with a little more pleasure than they are used to via you sublime scent:)

Nope, 3 sprays is just fine – I was actually going to go for 4 of Safran, so when I hit #3 and discovered my mistake I called it quits.

Fortunately, I have a private office and now that it’s summer (I’m @ a university) no one even comes in. I wear a lot of things during the summer that are “far worse” than my beloved Santal Majascule, lol (like Lush’s Breath of God).

          • Merlin says:
            3 June 2014 at 7:25 am

It sounds like you can wear whatever you feel like, at present! And Breath of God is well suited to summer, with its menthol vibe! But I agree it has volume, lol:)

SOTD was Lys Soleia. I say “was” as it’s 6.30 pm here and it has faded since the morning. I can smell it but only if I put my nose on my wrist. I am afraid it doesn’t last very long on me.
Weather today was a mix of sunny, cloudy and windy – but warm – around 80 degrees Fahrenheit according to Google. I just hope it doesn’t get hotter too soon because I cannot stand the heat. But I think we will get a heatwave quite soon. Oh well.

SOTD is No Matter What by Liaison de Parfum from a sample I have. It’s the first time I’ve put it on, and so far I am liking it. I get a light soap note, but I like that.

Regarding the stuck glass stopper problem, I once put on a pair of latex gloves and very gently wiggled the glass stopper out of a perfume bottle. You can get a good grip and carefully pull the stopper.

Latex gloves are a super idea!

I’ve also put drops of alcohol around the stopper for a day or two if it was resisting usual efforts and I suspected that it might have gotten glued with perfume residue.

That is one of my all-time favorites. Great choice. I raced out of the house at 6:30 a.m., completely forgetting to spritz anything in my desperation to get to a 7:00 a.m. doctor’s appointment on time. Who makes 7:00 a.m. appointments anyway?!! Since the office is a “no scent zone,” I’m not comfortable with spraying anything now that I’m here. I’ll have to make up for this tomorrow morning, don’t you think? 😉

Started out with Ninfeo Mio, an unreflected choice that wasn’t excellent for stressy office day – felt like it was taunting me with its garden scent. Finished a huge project application and celebrated by trying on White Diamonds (sheer and subtle floral, not quite what I wanted) and Guerlain Shalimar edp (vanilla overload! not particularly well suited to the warm day but delicious).

Crown was an old English perfume house that was purchased by Clive Christian around 2000 or so (my dates might be off); he then discontinued the Crown scents and used the bottle style for his own fragrances. (I have yet to smell any CC, and I probably won’t. Mr. Christian annoys me.) So of course all the Crown stock hit the online discounters very cheap for a couple of years, and I picked up Crown Bouquet – tons of galbanum, plus some gentle white flowers; you might love it. I adore the stuff, which probably contributes to my annoyance with old Clive. I didn’t get to smell all of them, but I do really love Crown Bouquet.

You know, Liu and Vega are similar, but Liu seemed much flatter and more powdery to me. Love Vega; Liu not so much… couldn’t say exactly why.

Foggy and about 65F now but should clear soon and temps should hit about 72F this afternoon.

I’m sampling L’Artisan Traversee du Bosphore this morning. The opening about did me in with sugared saffron and something sour (probably the pomegranate) but shortly thereafter quieted down to a fruity vanilla. Like all L’Artisans on me, it will be gone in an hour and then I think I’ll go put on some L’Heure Bleue.

For me to enjoy TdB the most, I need to bring it down to earth by layering it. I normally dab on a tad of Lancome Magie Noire, AT L’Air du Desert Marrocain, or SSS Champagne de Bois to help give it a bit of gravity. The dark, dry woods and ambers of the above tend to reduce that super “pink” brightness of TdB and give it some balance for my nose.

I love that, and wore it yesterday! An evil minion at Atelier Cologne had suggested it’s even bettah layered with Orange Sanguine, and I loved the combo. I love them singly or layered. Sous le Toit de Paris is no longer available in the just the 30mL bottles, so I recently restocked with the ginormous one :p I cannot be without it.

The weather is hot, hazy, humid, with a chance of thunderstorms here in Toronto. No SOTD (thanks to work restrictions) but I went for a walk at lunch and came back with a 50ml bottle of Goutal Nuit Etoilée. Impulse, unsniffed purchase. My favorite kind. I guess that will be my SOTE.

Guerlain Meteorites. Pure girly whimsy, powdery violet – brings a smile to my face, exactly right for today: a public holiday, and meeting a girlfriend for coffee at an arty cafe in the afternoon. I live on the equator, so no significant summer/winter changes. It was a coolish day with a few rain drops.

I love Meteorites in Spring on “a coolish day with a few rain drops,” one of the few scents I own that I actually finished the entire bottle. Luckily, I have 1 more hidden away. It’s been d/c awhile, don’t know how readily it can be found. So enjoy every drop and every smile!

SOTD is Ganesh by Arcana. Clove, spices, and honey. It is sunny and we’re expecting a high of 83.

I like the graphic that you used today.

Eau de Russe sounds nice. Do you own that lovely bottle?

I do not, I have a decant! I almost bought it when I first discovered it, but it was already discontinued then and I was worried about the shelf life. Turns out to have kept well even in a decant, so I should have bought it. Oh well!

You need a perfume fridge. The bottles are small and you could use it just for the discontinued stuff. 🙂

Here in Estonia we have rainy and cloudy day, 13C (55F), so I wear a coat. And Jovoy Paris – Les Jeux sont Faits –very lovely men’s fragrance with tobacco and alcohol notes. I don’t know why it’s men’s, it looks like unisex for me.

Hello NST! Here in Alberta it is a balmy 34 celsius. Hot like summer. SOTD is hubby’s Hermes vintage eau de colgne which is a splash that I keep in the fridge. It’s fleeting but very nice in the heat.

It’s 87 here in Houston (according to the Weather Channel app on my phone), and I’m wearing Aromatics Elixir. I got a sample from a fellow fumie who was offering the bottle. She sent me a sample to evaluate before I make a decision because she thought the bottle might be a little off. Smells fine to me.

It was a more or less temperate Autumn day, here in South Africa – and I am wearing both Mugler’s Pure Havane (about 2 or 3 sprays) and Santal Majuscule (2 or three sprays). From what I gather that would be considered heavy perfume application, but I am not feeling smothered (just getting a whiff here and there) and no one seems to have noticed that I am wearing perfume! So, opinions? Am I over-applying?

By the way, I find SM a much more dense scent but to have far less projection that the sweeter PH…

I would have thought SM would simply drown PH in the projection/longevity stakes!?Interesting!Did you intentionally experiment with these 2’s layering?(Une Rose is fabulous,by the way!lol!:-))

I put on a spray of PH on each arm because I haven’t worn it in a while, but then, as I was getting dressed, I was utterly bewildered with the fabulous dark scent coming from a shirt I had worn a day or two ago! The dry down of SM on cloth is a delicious dense dark cocoa:) So then I added about 2 sprays of SM to the sleeves of the shirt I was wearing. I think the scents have mixed now!

Glad UR works on you! Turns sour on me, unfortunately.

I think PH and SM play nice together because of the chocolate and cocoa connection!

Ambre Nuit, Dior from a sample. Yummy, a bit masculine. There’s gotta be patchouli in this but it’s not enough to bother me. Powdery, good scent. Not sure if it’s worth the price tag, perhaps to one that can afford it more easily than I, it would be, still good scent.

80 degrees and humid, a little bit of sun and off-again/on-again (much-needed rain). A perfect day for one of my favorite Atlantic seaboard scents, C&E’s Nantucket Briar. Reminds me of camping with the wild ponies – think Marguerite Henry’s famous book, Misty of Chincoteague, – at the Assateague Island National Seashore (Maryland & Virginia). A hint of spice from the maritime forest, wild briar roses by day and tiny evening primroses buried in the sand by night, salty sea breezes, hot sun on clean cotton clothes, and watching the sun rise and set from this tiny barrier island.

It’s a beautiful sunny day here in Venice by the beach, so I thought I would throw on some Urban Lily by Strange Invisible Perfumes. It is local perfumer Alexandra Balahoutis’ take on the first day of spring in Paris. It seemed to be the perfect weather for it, but also gives me a feeling of escape since there is nothing LA or beachy about it…A really unexpected take on lilies.

The weather today has been sunny, but not that warm. This is a time of year that is considered especially beautiful here in Sweden, “between the *hägg*(bird cherry) and the lilac”. It’s midnight and I’m writing this in the midnight sun 🙂

94 in the shade and humid but supposed to be the coolest day all week so heading out to mow the lawn. Forgot perfume this morning but think I will put on some O de Lancôme for mowing. Coming back from lunch today the elevator and hallway smelled like popcorn and patchouli (our office is on the floor with the break room and often smells of popcorn) and my coworker and I had a good laugh about how nice it was and how we would both wear it if someone bottled it.

    SOTD = VC&A Orchidee Vanille

I needed something comforting to last me the whole day so I slightly over applied but since this is such a beautiful vanilla and stays quite close to skin, no one around me minded (or if they did, no one said anything). I went to a wake in the evening, then had dinner with friends at this tiny hole in the wall hand-pulled noodle place in the upper west side.
