Monday scent of the day 5/26

Posted by Robin on 26 May 2014 85 Comments

HYLNDS Bitter Rose, Broken Spear

Do check in with your scent of the day! I wore L'Artisan Ananas Fizz all weekend after Janice mentioned it in Friday's SOTD poll. This morning I'm wearing a dab of DS+Durga HYLNDS Bitter Rose, Broken Spear.

Reminder: this Friday, we'll try our first coordinated / community scent of the day. Please try to think of your favorite fragrance note (or one of them, if you can't narrow down), wear your favorite fragrance that features that note, and tell us about it! If that doesn't work for you for whatever reason, no worries, chime in anyway. The following Friday, June 6, let's all try to wear something by Chanel.

I’m trying out new stuff, Hugo Boss Ma vie pour femme on the left (crisp roses, greens, some nice cuddly musk) and Escada Joyful on the right (sparkly florals, currants and …crisp roses).
Both are, well, nice, and I prefer the Hugo Boss one. It’s imo, much better then the Day one, but not better the Nuit intense. In case you all were wondering 🙂

My SOTD is Anya’s Garden Pan. It is raining and gorgeous out (this is the first big rain in several years of drought) so I am celebrating with this pungent herbal beauty. Yesterday I wore eau de whatever bug spray I could find and ended up soaking wet and covered in sludge from working on the rain catchment system. The sudden downpour washed several clogs down into the system. Nothing like several hundred gallons of dirty rainwater suddenly hitting you in the face while balanced on top of a 12′ ladder. I smelled foul. Hope everyone else had a great weekend!

Rain is nice when you’ve had a drought! But sorry you ended up in sludge.

I had an appointment at the doctor’s this morning and didn’t have much time to think what to wear. It was hot since the day started so I thought Parfum d’Empire Azemour will do the trick. It did!

SOT morning will be Oolang Infini. I’ve been reading about it on Olfactoria’s site, and am inspired to give it another try. I want something that will wear off pretty fast, since SOT evening will be something else, probably 24 Faubourg.

I love it and also have the soap. It doesn’t have much lasting power, so you probably had no problem with your evening scent (I’m writing this on Tuesday.) When I first sampled it last year, I loved it but was disappointed that it vanished so quickly. But nowadays, it seems to last longer or be more noticeable on my skin.

SOTD was Osmanthus Interdite and it will be for the rest of the week, I think. I am infatuated. However, on Friday (I know it’s a bit late but I was travelling and thought I’d unplug during the weekend) I tested the new Malle, Eau de Magnolia. It’s really fresh and light and beautiful and the drydown is woody and mossy – lovely. Plus, I could still smell it on my wrist after 8 hours.

Jo Malone Grapefruit Cologne since Saturday evening. Became suddenly very dizzy on Saturday and as I was home alone, called a cab driver to take me to ER. 8 hours later, the verdict is: inner ear related and none of the other fears I had at the time (heart attack, stroke, etc). I still have vertigo but the doc says it will pass. The Grapefruit is uplifting, pleasant, uncomplicated and a bit soapy – just right for my slightly fragile state.

My husband experienced this yesterday. He called me home he was so worried. We typically do the Epley maneuver and that helps, but he really struggled this time.
Check out this maneuver as it works wonders.

I wake up very occasionally with total vertigo–unable to walk or stand without passing out–and so now I keep a box of Bonine in my bedside table. It doesn’t get needed very often, but on those rare occasions when I can’t safely move out of bed, it is a lifesaver! Hope you find something that works well for you! That queasy feeling is no fun!

Trying out Prada Luna Rossa Extreme, last forever on me and the sillage is a beast in this heat. I want to hate it because it’s quite unoriginal but it’s not bad scent wise and is a vast improvement in my opinion of the regular Luna Rossa.

Wearing SJP Lovely as I have been a lot lately. Seems to be working very nicely for spring, which has been such a pleasant turn of events. I bought the bottle (actually, a gift set with rollerball) more than a year ago, I think–very cheap at a thrift store, but still I felt a bit stupid to have devote any perfume dollars at all to it as I wasn’t sure I even liked it… So nice to find I do now!

Oh gosh, I am SO pleased to hear it, and, so funny we had just the same experience! I wonder what it is that makes this nicer in warmer weather–with what wears on me at least as pretty diffusive musk (the first time I wore it, the people who happened to be riding in the car with me had to roll down the windows!), I just assumed winter was a better bet. But no, much nicer now! I think you’re right that something about a late spring breeze is so compatible with it.

SOTD: PdN Number One Intense – sprayed lightly! This one can be so overwhelming, but lightly spritzed it’s radiant. Maybe it will cut through the gloomy grey rainy day. No complaints on the rain though – we really need it. I dug out my PdN scents after someone mentioned L’Eau a la Folie was discontinued. I have so many from this line.

I’ve also been investigating The Laundress detergents. They have two Le Labo scents (Rose, Santal) that seem promising. I’m wondering if anyone has tried these or their classic scents?

SOTD is OJ Ta’if. Nearly drained my large decant and trying to decide if I should bite the bullet and buy a FB and just pay that horrible shipping, or if I should just get another decant with one of the various sales (like today!). The price per mL “bargain” is still the FB, even with the enormous shipping fee, but it’s the principal of the the thing!

It really is brutal, their shipping charges. They do have often have specials with really good freebies though (e.g. a free parfum mini with an EDP purchase!)–maybe a compromise would be to get a decant on sale now, and then get a bottle when they’ll throw in a great extra? If you “like” their Facebook page, you can see when those specials are on.

I really hope you’ll enjoy Isle Ryder! And sorry to hear that Kevin didn’t like the series. I very much appreciate his writing style and was blindly following his opinion on the latest Diptyque (yes, that was a funny review) until I had a random chance to try them myself. Wow, what a surprise. At first I did dismiss Lavande to quickly discover that this is nothing like a boring scent on me: after a somewhat unusual burst of lavender, it turns into a leather scent with prominent spices, and once in a while there are random buzzes of green and flowers. I ordered it and cannot wait to receive my new leather scent that is not sweet.

SOTD = Soivohle Kentucky Bourbon Rose

I jumped on the limited edition bandwagon with this as I don’t drink bourbon but like the smell of it (it is like comforting mulled spices to me). I scented my hair which could withstand practically anything (my skin, not so much). Anyway, as a natural perfume, it has very good longevity (5 hours in and it still smells as if I just put it on); sillage is quite low…just the way I like it!

I am looking forward to the community scent of the day, this Friday’s and the next one!

In L’Occitaine last week I came across two scents that had been discontinued but have been brought back: Eau d’Iparie and Ambre. I had not heard of either before but immediately fell deeply in love with the amber one. All I can say is that at $70 I am infinitely thankful that it is affordable. I far prefer it to so many ambers that go for more than double that price!

Eau d’Iparie is coming back too? That’s wonderful news if that’s the case! That one and Eau des Baux are my favorites from them. Several months ago I actually emailed them about it and they said it was discontinued, so I assumed the bottle I had bought in France must have been leftover stock from before. Maybe they’ve changed their minds! It especially makes sense for the Ambre, I think that one is/was pretty popular. Do you happen to know if they’re going to be in the regular line-up again, or are they some sort of limited release?

So the shops here (in South Africa) have both Ambre and Eau d’Ipaire. The staff say they have more stock than what is on the shelves. They say it had been discontinued but has been brought back. They seem a little unsure, and having worked in retail myself I doubt they have any definite information. Often sales assistants are given ambiguous or mixed messages. Sometimes this is because those giving the information are not clear themselves or because the decisions higher up have not been made with any certainty. From what I read on the web it seems these fragrances were re-introduced in 2012, but in that case I’m not sure exactly when they were discontinued. Sorry I can’t be more helpful! Eau des Baux is my other favorite from L’Occitane, and I definitely need to try Eau d’parie again.

Hmm, maybe it’s only being brought back in certain locations. I see it in stock on their South Africa site, but the U.S. site still says it’s discontinued, and it’s not even listed on the French site. I guess only time will tell! Thanks again for the info.

I’ll have to keep an eye out because I really like it and would go so far as to even buy a back-up if necessary! (I have a weird aversion towards buying 2 bottles of the same perfume, so this means I REALLY like it!)

SOTD is the first Ines de la Fressange… sad it’s gone. You can still find minis, and I think Amazon still has bottles of the second fragrance (the oak leaf bottle, the fruity-musky one) – but the original? Hen’s teeth.

Adore it. Peach, jasmine, rose, benzoin, sandalwood, with a sprinkling of aldehydes up top (fizzy ones).

SOTD was going to be Midnight Oud but that lasted about 45 minutes so I switched to Fragrance Republic 01/04. We didn’t get the beautiful sunny day they kept promising me. It was gray and somewhat dismal but at least it wasn’t cold. I’m finally done planting those hosta. I did a rough count and I put in about 180 plants. Granted, some of them are small at the moment but still, that’s a lot of planting.
Now I’m trying to pick a SOTE. I can’t figure out what I’m in the mood for though.

How about #3 green, green, green…and green? Barring that, maybe some Tiger Balm…

Or you could go to the other extreme and feel glam in some Amouage, 24 Faubourg, POAL:)

I was wearing Fracas yesterday, and I do today as well.
Friday will be Cuir Russie day then 🙂 That is the only Chanel that i own.

SOTD on Monday (writing this on Tuesday) was my sample of Le Parum de Therese. This was my second testing of it. It’s very reminiscent for me of the great classics in the 50’s, although I can’t think which ones. It’s very special and sophisticated, but much as I like smelling it, it’s not a good fit for me. It makes me feel like I’m wearing a lovely dress that belongs to someone else and doesn’t fit with my style.

I adore Parfum de Therese and am savoring the rest of my sample, yet totally understand what you mean about someone else’s dress. I don’t know where you live, but I found that it works better in cooler weather rather than heat and humidity. If I tried to wear it yesterday in 85 degrees with a few thunderstorms it would have choked me.

    Typo: parfum, not parum.
