Scent of the day 5/20

Posted by Robin on 20 May 2014 113 Comments

hermes-quadrige

If you are so inclined, do share your scent of the day, and tell us why you chose it.

And, please vote: would you like to see 'scent of the day' polls every day, Monday through Friday? One or two a week? Or are the weekend lazy polls enough?

I'm wearing four fragrances from Hermès while I finish up today's review. Shown is their Quadrige dip-dyed silk scarf, $910.

SOTD is Bois des Isles again.
I vote for weekdays or, say, every Tuesday and Thursday.
A year or so ago I made a conscious decision to minimize computer time on weekends. I’ve missed many Lazy Weekend polls, sadly, but weekends feel longer now! and that’s a fair trade off.

SuzyQ – I’ve had to drastically limit my weekend computer time now that my daughter is 6. She is massively into imitating and can get really fixated. The last thing I want is for her to just think that all Mommy does is sit in front of a computer all the time. It’s made a huge difference. Since she was about 4.5 or 5 years old, my husband and I really limit out computer time while she is around to see us. We don’t ban the computer entirely, but we put a limit to one hour per day. It is really hard! I miss a lot of blog stuff, but then I don’t miss out on other things in my life that are in the analog world. In a few years when she is a pre-teen then I’m sure it will be different.

    Shalimar extrait.
    Because it’s comforting and a mood-booster!
I’m in my blue period. Like Picasso, but without the paintings!
I’m liking the daily SOTD minipoll.
Like Suzy above, I miss most lazy weekend polls so this is a nice way for me to get a glimpse of what other perfume lovers are testing/loving/hating/choosing….

SOTD is Mona di Orio Violette Fumée. I was intrigued enough by my sample to buy a small decant and now that that’s almost gone, I’ve really come to like it.

It’s fun to see what other people are wearing, so I’d vote for these polls as often as you’re willing to do them.

I love that scarf… and can’t help calculating how many bottles of perfume one could buy for that much money!

SOTD: GIORGIO ARMANI ACQUA DI GIO ESSENZA EAU DE PARFUM POUR HOMME

WHY?: I just received a sample vial and wanted to try it since it is a big seller and won the FiFi Awards for 2013; I can see why, Essenza is WONDERFUL!…I definitely am going to purchase a fb!

VOTE: I WOULD like to see SOTD polls EVERYDAY…I think they are very fun.

SIDEBAR: Robin, what four Hermes fragrances are you wearing? If you are going to offer a SOTD for us to post, I would like to know what you are wearing as well…thank you.

I may not always comply on Tuesdays & Thursdays, it’s when I’m finishing reviews…usually I’m wearing whatever I’m reviewing! But today, wearing vintage Caleche EdT because someone mentioned it the other day & realized I hadn’t worn it in awhile, but Jour d’Hermes regular & Absolu (for the review) and Kelly Caleche (because curious to smell the EdP version next to the Jour d’Hermes Absolu).

Oh, can’t wait to hear how the Kelly Caleche EDP compares to the Jour Absolu. I really like KC EDP but the first Jour felt a bit cold (though inarguably beautiful!) to me.

Oh, then I will disappoint you — wasn’t really comparing the 2, they’re too different. Just was curious to compare the “weight” so to speak. This Jour though is definitely less cold, but whether it’s warmed up enough to suit you….??

Sous le Vent, because it’s one of my favorites and had fallen out of the rotation lately (not from any lack of love, just kept forgetting to refill the little spray bottle that I use to apply it).

Did anyone else hear that SlV (along with Vega) was slated to be discontinued by Guerlain? I panicked a little and called Bergdorf’s in NYC to order a backup bottle a couple of weeks ago, but Alina at Guerlain said that the word they had gotten was that the scents would probably be repackaged, but not discontinued. FWIW (and I still got that bottle).

      Looking forward to trying it!

Wearing Bohemia from One Seed because I was in a sampling mood but apparently have almost no running water at the moment, and all natural perfumes, even if I don’t adore them, are less likely to be scrubbers. This is a soft chocolate with rose and tea tones on me. Nice but probably not FBW. I’d favor a SOTD poll 2 or 3 times/wk

    Four fragrances today!
Wow! I guess that’s the life of a perfumista blogger 😉

To answer your question on how often you might do SOTD, in some respects I think every day would make sense because not everyone will be able to chime in each day but you’ll have the option to do so if you are able to. Whereas if you just do, for example, Wed. – mid-week, that will only capture those that are able to join in on Wed.

Personally I like a mid-week SOTD. I would look forward to that mid-week SOTD. I also appreciate the “why” part too. Helps for us still learning 😉

And, for my SOTD: Field Notes from Paris
Why? I just love the tobacco note among the orange blossoms, and especially on a 55 degree weather day. I did notice this morning after spraying, however, that it is quite masculine. Definitely unisex!

SOTD: absent as I will be doing landscaping work. Even though I’ve been assured our swarming ground bees won’t sting, I always have quite unusual (albeit friendly) encounters with animals, birds and marine life. Chances are insects could be next…

As far as the SOTD polls go, I really look forward to the lazy weekend Saturdays, but I can certainly relate to those who can’t participate and feel they’re missing out. I think once more during the week, say Wednesday, would be good.

I vote for two during the week!

SOTD is Dior’s Addict. It was reformulated a couple of years back, but I have a 20ml bottle from before that. Unfortunately the spray is bust and I need to spritz then swipe the scent that spills from somewhere or other onto my skin, lol.

I went through a stage where I strongly disliked it but am glad I held onto it – works perfectly for when a really heady, heavy white flower vanilla is in order. Today is cold!

Because I am on medical leave and spend my days at home, I am taking this opportunity to go through the million samples I have. Today, I am wearing Benevolence by House of Sillage. I adore it.

You should definitely start testing your samples out. You might find one that you love and then you can buy a FB instead of buying samples. But, it is so much fun! If I could afford it, I would gladly buy a bottle of Benevolence. I would have never known about it if I didn’t get a sample of it. Good luck with your testing. I hope you find one you fall madly in love with.

The problem isn’t testing things since I tried over 300 scents on skin last year, the problem is that I keep acquiring more. I do in facthave dozens of scents on my full-bottle wishlist but when I want a scented indulgence for cheap, then I either purchase some samples or some soap but I think I’ve maxed out my soap capacity……

SOTD: Annick Goutal’s Hadrien Absolu (with the recent repackaging: Eau d’Hadrien edp). Like a summer walk through a lovely lemon grove. I know it’s changed, what with all the restrictions on citrus oils, but I’d rather have this version than no version at all. I’ve loved and worn Hadrien for 20 years and would be heartbroken if it were to go away.

Today I’m wearing Cartier Baiser Volé Eau de Toilette, though my sample ran out after the smallest spritz. It’s nice for the hot sunny weather that we’re getting here. I’m trying to decide whether to buy a FB – saw it at a local discount shop. I like it but wish it had just a bit more *something* to it. Any suggestions for layering?

SoTD is Salvatore Ferragamo pour homme (discontinued bordeaux box)

When it came out circa 2000 it was too much for me… the almost cetonic first stage of fig leaves (to me it smells like green dates-the fruit).

But I still liked it and of course being a naive sould I thought it would last forever.. (it had won a 2000 new fragrance of the year at the FiFis)… but you see, no one (and no perfume) has security anymore… the frag was discontinued… or if it still is in production, the production is minuscule.

Anyway I got it a couple of years ago and I am about to finish the bottle! 😀 I must say that I’ve enjoyed this immensely.

SOTD is Guerlain Terracotta Le Parfum. I absolutely love it and find it perfect for our balmy climate here in SW Florida.

I enjoy SOTD threads because I find it interesting to see what scent people are wearing and why, though I think daily could be overkill. Maybe one mid-week and one on the weekend?

I’d like to see SOTD 2-3 times a week, besides weekends. People can choose to participate or not, or can choose one day to list what they wore on various days of the week and their reasons and experiences. I learn so much about perfume this way and through NST, I’ve become a full-fledged perfumista and also discovered wonderful fragrances I never knew existed!

It’s very hot and muggy here today. I started the day with Carnal Flower and at midday, spritzed on Ginger Essences which actually lasted for hours! It usually vanishes quickly. I think I’ll now spray some THC Bergamote and of course, will wear my Lalique Amethyst to bed (it really helps me sleep).

Today it’s Amazing Grace. I have been enjoying their body spray before bed and doubled up with the edt after my morning shower. Good for office wear and 100 degree days.
Have to add that on my trip to the Hermes boutique in Vegas a few years back to pick up some 15 ml bottles of AN and VT, I was admiring a dip-dyed scarf behind the counter. The SA grabbed the end and pulled it down in a flourish. It and months worth of dust. Well….I let out a sneeze, and I mean a big, wet Yosemite Sam – sized sneeze. I was mortified, but not guilty. We both knew that. Now I see just what an expensive sneeze that was. Thanks, Robin!

I am wearing Parfums DelRae Amoureuse b/c I was decanting some this morning for a swap and I got it all over my fingers – yum! I needed to tone it down so at lunch time I put on just a wee bit of Lancome Mille et Une Roses. Now I smell like a proper summer garden! I wish Lancome would realease MeUR in the US already. What’s the deal? Roses are very popular this last year or so, and they would have killed if it were another LE in the states. It is the real queen of the soft, musky, vanilla roses.

Amoureuse? Forever and massive. Amoureuse, for me, is definitely a fragrance that needs a gentle dab here and there. A full blast would be really stunning and intoxicating and that’s not necessarily a good thing for more than a few hours. More than one good spray would clear a small room. The fragrance lasts for at least 15 hours on my skin, if not more. Mille et Une Roses? Perfectly tempered no matter how you apply. It wears quiet but for a long time.

My SOTD is Lancome Tresor Midnight Rose. Regular Tresor smells like peach-scented plastic on me, but I decided to try this one on a whim at Sephora a couple weeks ago. I tried it again and kept thinking about it, so I decided to buy the 30ml yesterday. It was under $50 so in perfume terms, that’s even less than free, right?

How is the Tresor Midnight Rose different than the original Tresor? Are the cedarwood and musk notes prominent in the Midnight Rose? I am not that fond of the original Tresor either.

I think they’re very different from each other. Midnight rose has a berry note instead of peach, but it melds with the rose note (which is also darker and more prominent than the original), and it’s not overly sweet. The cedarwood and musk are very prominent. On my skin, there is a period where the cedar note almost takes on a slight sweaty quality, but in a good way. A few people on Fragrantica compared it to Lalique Amethyst. I haven’t smelled that one, but if you have, maybe that will give you some frame of reference.

My scent of the day is Onda, which I’m wearing to celebrate both my anniversary and a day off of work.

I like the idea of daily SOTD polls.

I echo the sentiment of the folks who cite ‘weekend warrior-ing’ as the reason for not being able to catch up with the LWPs. My job entails a lot of weekend work and am too burnt out to look at a computer screen come Sunday eve. But I also like to know what everyone else is wearing and their particular reviews for their SOTDs. I think two polls a week is sufficient.

My own SOTD: Mon Jasmin Noir L’Exquise. Gosh, love this frag!

SOTD!Tom Ford Viole(n)t Blond.I’ve been on a Violet kick these past 2 weeks, really enjoying this 1 and Lush Tuca Tuca.To my horror, almost ALL of the Tom Ford Private Blends/Exclusives go sour on my skin.Tobacco Vanille the most (And it was FANTASTIC on the smelling strip!)The weird thing is,I have great Perfume-loving skin, even 28 La Pausa lasts very long on me,so not sure what the deal with the TF’s are?Only Violet Blonde and Sahara Noir settles comfortably.Nice to do SOTD during the week, gives me a mental break from the everyday mundane!

My SOTD is Fox by Sweet Anthem. It has several notes, but, to my nose, the focus is on a very realistic honey and beeswax combination. The addition of beeswax balances the honey. I chose it because today’s cooler weather allowed it and because work has been stressful.

I would like to see a SOTD day poll at least twice.

Wearing Dia, my new office scent, ie the rest of the bottle is at work to use up. I think two SOTD polls a week would work well.

Annie, I’m delighted to find a kindred spirit: I have a Dia solid that I keep in the office! It almost seems like heresy to wear Amouage to work, but Dia creates an invincible forcefield of perfection.

Nice Hermés scarf — I’m so excited about the body products that are coming.

My SOTD is Daim Blond — I’ve been intending to wear my decant for the past few months and never bothered looking around for it. A friend posted it as her SOTD last week and it made me really commit to finally wearing this. So luscious. I now sense it sharing some DNA with Bottega Veneta.

I have no strong opinion about SOTD polls, but they’re fun and easy when I come across them!

SOTD is Lyric–pretty and not too heavy as the weather starts to warm up in the afternoons.

I don’t think I’d be interested in reading/participating in more than 1 or 2 polls a week–so if there’s one on the weekend, not sure I’d read it during the week. However, if the weekend topic is something else, a surprise mid-week poll could be fun!

SOTD is Enlevement au Serail. I wish it had a bit more lasting power on me, but I do love it so.

I’d like to see SOTD on Mondays and maybe Friday… We can comment on the past week’s wearings and what we liked best. More than once or twice a week would be too much, like Lucasi mentioned above.

I “went commando,” as Denyse Beaulieu would say, for a day of sightseeing with my brother and his family, and taking them out for sushi. Now that I’m home, I’m testing Hermes Eau de Narcisse Bleu, because it was on one of the Grain de Musc best lists, the Jour Absolu review reminded me to get it out again, and I needed something relaxing after walking around day.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Silver Iris

I picked it in honor of Lucas as this was his graduation day SOTD. I also knew I was going to have a 14 hour day at work today.

I vote for 1 – 2 SOTD polls during the week. More often than that will send me to the poorhouse much more quickly as they really end up being enabling posts!

Tokyo Milk Sencha Bleu to the office, but that turned out too hyacinthy-watery for me, so spritzed Tokyo Milk (Dark) Arsenic when I got home, and felt more right in my skin. It’s a bit edgy, but less so than the name suggests. Also vote for SOTD 1 -2 times a week during the week. Whichever way it turns out, great to connect and read here – a blessing every day.

I’ll vote for twice a week, too. As a West Coast (US) reader and an insomniac, there are usually 100 posts by the time I start reading, and while I enjoy hearing about what everyone’s wearing, I need to put away the iPod occasionally. SOTD: Natori. I bought a decant blind. (But on sale!) It’s quieter and a bit sweeter than I expected, but a nice warm oriental. Could be a nice daytime scent in cool weather.

SOTD is I Love NY Les Carrottes. It’s a nice fun sparkly scent.
It seems that people are listing different scents on this weekday query than on weekends. I suspect more people indulge in their “I Love This For Me” scents on weekends, and chose a “conference” or work appropriate scent on weekdays. I think it’s fascinating to see people’s choices for both part of their loves so I vote for at least one weekday and a weekend poll.
