My inclination is to give up on attempting to educate future generations as I can’t seem to get my younger coworkers off their papaya/cat pee combos.
So…. I would chronicle “the wonder of me” through the ages:
Sortilege – my first great scent
Biba – purchased at the iconic store in Kensington as a 17 year old.
Parure – still my favorite. Pure beauty.
    Bandit – sexy as hell
Bois des Iles – classic, and on my mind this week as Chanel just jacked up the price horribly.
These samplings would speak volumes about me and let anyone who found them know that we had some real beauties!

Of course that was me waxing and I don’t wish to offend anyone here, so I won’t divulge the name, only the initials SJP NYC. Oops.

cat pea and mango smells to me like the little girl in school whose clothes were not washed often enough-does that stuff smell good on anyone? I loved the original Tiffany fragrance, but don’t think that it is quite the same.

Parure? Really Guerlain? Surely the Guerlain family has a wicked sense of humor to give a perfume that unfortunate moniker. Paruresis is when the sufferer experiences an inability to…umm..well, pee..in the presence of others. “Pee shy” would be another way of putting it. Hope that doesn’t ruin the love you have for the fragrance but thought you should know just the same.

The word parure means a set of matching jewelry, and comes from an old French word meaning adornment.

And I thought ‘cat pee’ was one those indolic/civet-like notes – the kind that a sophisticated perfumista has finally acquired a love for, lol!

maybe…unless you are a cat owner…in which case it only inspires a case of frantic searching and sniffing with the phrase “damn worthless cat” thrown about liberally. ;)

Ha! Civet we love, I’m talking about American Shorthair. Not elusive enough, and not for a top, heart and base note.
And please, never with tropical fruit!
Th note I was describing is neither feral nor sexy, simply flat and stinky, and when you add in 110 degree AZ summer days my nose cries “Uncle!”.

        17 August 2013 at 3:02 pm

Ack, it would be SO hard to make that 5. This could be a list from my very early days as a perfumista…maybe a list from when I started NST?

        Diptyque Philosykos
        Guerlain Vetiver
        Ormonde Jayne Frangipani
        Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist
        L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer

So those came to mind right away, but then I started thinking about Fracas, and the Frederic Malle line, and there’s no rose on that list, and hey, there’s nothing by Jean Claude Ellena on that list which is obviously crazy. So can’t be done! Might be nice to do a list like this every year.

were you asking about personal favorites, or in general? I listed some I thought would be notable for posterity, not my HG scents.
Oh, and I recently acquired my 1st JCE (vintage First edt, more substantial than the current edp) and my 1st Hermes, 24 Faubourg.

I bet Daisy proposed this one before 2011, the year in which most of the great perfumes were destroyed. So the question makes me sad, since I’d like to have had someone put some backup bottles in a time capsule for me of some perfumes that, despite being released within the last 6 years, have nonetheless been reformulated badly. All that aside,

    5 for a time capsule? Hmmm …

    Bandit
    Borneo
    Vetiver Pour Elle
    L’Heure d’Nuit
    and maybe Nahema extrait?

This was a LOOOOONG time ago….who knew Robin had lists this long? While I don’t really remember what I was thinking of at the time…..was it pre-coffee, post-coffee, while I was bemoaning a reformulation…..now that I’m thinking about it this morning — my time capsule would have to have a few more than the top five land mark fragrances in their original (or close to it) form. Just off the top of my head I’d pick these:
      1.Chanel No5
      2. Shalibarf….er, I mean Shalimar or Molinard Habanita
      3. Guerlain Sous le Vent
      4. Fracas
      5.Coty Chypre

But now I think there could be a few other important categories as well (I’ll order the “large size” time capsule) Or maybe I’d change my time capsule to make it a “Best of the Best” type thing: 3 best Citrus, 3 best green, 3 best chypre, 3 best fougere, etc. That would be more fun. :)

Hi Daisy! I was just thinking that a time capsule really makes me sad since if I actually had to put bottles in it that I had to find myself, today, I’d have to try really hard to get older lots – even my Vetiver Pour Elle reissue would have to be before 2011! One doesn’t expect things that one bought a few years back to be dramatically different toda;, something like Chypre, sure, that’s expected, but when people are running around trying to find pre-2011 Miss Dior Cherie, there’s something so wrong with the industry! But I love the question you posed. I just have to think of it more in ideal terms :D

I like your list. Sous le Vent, swoon!

No worries, Lys — the Perfume Gods will be supplying the unadulterated pre-remangled bottles.

oops, did I say pre-reMANGLED? of course I meant to say pre-reformulation…. ;)

It’s very wicked of Daisy to limit us to only five – even with 10 or 20, it would be hard not to cheat, and Daisy would be the first to find a way!

    Lanvin Scandal – leather
Caron – En Avion – truly adventurous
Dior J’Adore (original 1999) – hedione done right – Calice Becker
    Frapin 1697 – gourmand – Duchaufour
Via del Profumo – Mecca Balsam – natural

It pains me not to include Eau Sauvage, Diorella, Seville a l’Aube, more leathers, weird Duchaufours, Puredistance I, Turtle Vetiver Back, AG Passion, Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain, BK Liaisons Dangereuses and Rose Oud, Aftelier Tango, Shalimar, and many others, but I’ll leave it to someone else.

Finally some love for Eau de Soir. I was too chicken to put it in my list after the horrid review given by Turin and Sanchez. I love it and think it’s the best chypre everrrrr. So . . . here goes. . .

      Onda extrait
      Cuir de Russie
      Cristalle or Mito
      Cabochard extrait (vintage)
Vent Verre or Ma Griffe (both vintage)
My list is a little heavy on leather and perhaps more representative of my loves than a broad reflection of genres but there you have it.

I know how to cheat this!! Of course ALL our time capsules will be included, so by my very rough calculations there could be well over hundred separate little containers buried together, which means that there will be lots more than just five fragrances for future perfumistas to smell!

OMG – that’s some serious insider information. I haven’t even heard of Place Rouge – when was that announced? Or is that more insider info? Other than NST, I haven’t been following any perfume blogs at all for a while now. Guerlain made a mistake (IMHO) with Quand Vient with that ridiculously expensive bottle. But they do that every so often.

And if memory serves… I believe I sent you my sample of Quand VIent. Same mailing address for the shiny stone. ;-)

Balenciaga Le Dix would also be there, together with CK’s Eternity(vintage version) together with PdN’s L’Eau a la Folie and Guerlain’s Samsara (again pre-reformulation).

I’m a cranky “woman of a certain age”, so of course I’m going to cheat! ;-) But, I’ll do it with some valid reasoning (of course I will) by doing it in categories.

    LONG LOST GREATS:
    Houbigant Fougere Royale
    Fath Iris Gris
    Coty Chypre
    Guerlain Djedi
    Caron Alpona

    STILL AROUND BUT GROSSLY REFORMULATED:
(obviously we’re saving the pre-reform versions)
    Lanvin My Sin
    Rochas Femme
    Chanel Cuir de Russie
    Guerlain Vol de Nuit
    Worth Je Reviens

    CURRENT PERFUMES:
    Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille
    Roja Dove Unspoken
    Amouage Jubilation 25
    Serge Lutens Silver Iris Mist
    Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain

There are so many great ones not on these lists. :-(

I can’t possibly stop at 5, but I will try, honestly.

Amouage Gold & Chanel No.5 ( the last one isn’t a personal favourite but should be preserved because of it’s iconic status)

    Piguet Fracas & Bandit

Clinique Aromatics Elixir and Guerlain Mitsouko

Guerlain Après l’Ondée and L’Heure Bleue

Lutens Iris Silver Mist and Etat Libre d’Orange Rien

And I sincerely apologise to: Goutal Sables, Songes, Heure Exquise, Vetiver, Eau de Monsieur and Eau du Fier. De Nicolaï’s Le Temps d’une Fête, Odalisque, Sacrebleu, New York and Pour Monsieur. Chanel’s Cristalle, No.19, Pour Monsieur and Cuir de Russie. Malle’s Le Parfum de Thérèse, Carnal Flower and Noir Epices. Lauder’s White Linen and Prescriptives Calyx. Dior’s Dune, Diorella, Diorissimo, Eau Sauvage and Poison. Bvlgari’s Black and Thé Vert and last but in my case not least: to YSL’s Paris.

The wanna be historian in me would want to save a picture of what the public at large deemed important. So even though I have not smelled most of these here goes:
Paris Hilton Heiress-undoubtedly a good representation of Ameica’s celebrity obsessed culture and emphasis on show off sexuality. (Plus, the other candidate for this honor, Justin Bieber’s Someday smells awful).
Avon’s Derek Jeter scent-whatever it is called because it is the number one male scent, probably represents the fact that most men still obtain their fragrance as gifts from women (who are probably buying Avon in small social parties or from that secretary in the office). Besides I love baseball and would vastly prefer it if other players would confine their chemical explorations to aldehydes, neroli extract etc.
Flower Bomb- probably the most popular current “prestige fragrance.”
Tide- yeah, most of us DO smell lightly of laundry detergent.
Kerosene Pretty Machine, as representing the development of American niche perfumery arising, in some sense, in response to disenchatment with, or decline of American mass manufacturing. (What would you all out there chose as a representative of the niche movement?)

I totally get the representative nature of these selections….however I threw up a little at the mention of Justin Bieber’s Someday.

*one of the worst I’ve ever smelled….not sure if I should thank or curse the discounter for sending me that sample. * :::shudders:::

It has been a phenomenal best seller, but I agree it really is awful.
Any way, that’s why I chose Heiress, (unsniffed by me.)
Plus, the title also reflects this culture’s depressing interest in children of celebs, rich and famous, or political leaders who may be charming and wonderful, but who have not had outstanding achievements themselves

How interesting… some of the old well known perfume like Mitsouko and many Chanel ones have to share the throne with the very recent creations by Vero Profumo and Neela Vermiere, Ormonde as well, though maybe less recent…
It is like when you love and then you are in love…this new intoxication that you cannot just dethrone for the sake of what is proven to be much better than good…
and you are not certain if it is just you or it is really the new true gem…
and by the same token we build collections…at least I have built it and still still there is much love out there that I have to steal away

    2. Guerlain Shalimar
    3. Serge Lutens Tubereuse Criminelle
    4. Puredistance M

The classics are already well covered here, and it seems reasonable to think scents that have already been around for 100+ years will still be around in another 100…so my capsule would be filled with favorites from my lifetime with great personal meaning.

    1. Dior Dune – stolen from my mom as a teenager, one of my proudest discoveries
    2. Gucci Rush – This holds such a special place in my heart. I discovered it on my first trip to Vegas (so appropriate!) and loved it so much that I wore it every day in my early 20s…to the office…when I thought fragrance should always be applied with a spritz to each wrist and one to the neck. So inappropriate. Oops. I bet all my old co-workers still make fun of me. That’s okay. Nothing makes me want to drink, dance, and sing out loud like Rush.
    3. Hermes Eau des Marveilles – similar to Dune, but shows progression. So easy to wear everyday and elegant. If I were ever forced to pick a signature scent this would be it.
    4. Chanel Coco – discovered (recently) as an adult, but deserves a spot in history. Plus it melts into my skin like no other fragrance.
    5. Estée Lauder Pleasures – I need a floral in the capsule and this one’s so distinctive. It was popular right around the time I graduated from college. Everytime I smell it I am reminded of that exciting time of my life – living amongst all of my friends, a sense of pride and great accomplishment, and a few weeks of downtime to party like a rockstar before starting a real job. There were so many possibilities back then. Everyone should have the chance to feel like that.

Fun poll! And it’s nice to see Daisy, too – I was wondering where you’ve been?!

Yes, yes Gucci Rush! That should definitely go down as a classic of the time period in which it was released. Thank you for reminding us, I went through two bottles (boxes?) and still have a little of one of them left. I heard it had been reformulated and was not what it once was. Sigh . . . .

I also went through two boxes and have a drop left. Someday I will buy another but for now I just search online and check Sephora’s site every few months to make sure that it hasn’t been totally discontinued.

I didn’t know about the reformulation. I wonder if I would even notice it because I never got the floral notes in Rush – just the spicy, earthy vetiver and patchouli, and maybe a little peach. I was shocked when I read gardenia was in it. To my (possibly incorrect) nose, Tokyo Milk’s French Kiss is an affordable doppelgänger. You might want to check it out if you don’t like the new formula.
