Same old open thread poll: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the fall launches you're most looking forward to, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Good afternoon my lovely fragrance community!
Today I’m wearing Amyris Homme, the newly released from Maison Francis Kurkdjian. It’s a nice and different take on iris, combined with woodyness of amyris wood and sweetness of tonka bean, and nicely blended background.
I’m really excited about this perfume because thanks to my local niche perfumery I was one of the first in Poland who tried it! Amazing, right?
Also my parents celebrate their wedding anniversary tomorrow and we’ll be going on another kayak trip and on a special dinner in the afternoon.
Is everyone doing fine? Hugs for all!
Congratulations to your parents!
Team GB has done quite well in kayaking at the Olympics – people say that the UK does OK in sports where we sit down! But I think your kayak trip will probably be very energetic, and you will work up an appetite for the special dinner.
What perfume is good for wearing in a kayak?.
Thanks!
I’ve seen how they did!
It will definitely energetic so the special dinner will be an even more special treat. After our previous kayak trip I had pain in my arms for next 3 days.
Good perfume for kayaking? Would say something that smells sunny, but I’ll probably go unscented, don’t want to waste any of my juice as it would wear off quickly.
I`ve been kayaking today, wearing Dzing! It worked fine, as in any environment, I think 😉
Good for you Lise, Dzing! is definitely not my fairytale…
Haha, it is not for everybody, no. I find it absolutely addictive, and very comforting. We can agree about kayaking beeing a god thing, though? Even if arms can get a little sore 🙂 Sounds like you have had a wonderful weekend.
Agree, kayaking is great though arms hurt the day after.
Yes, I had a good weekend.
Sounds like a perfect August weekend, Lucas! That MFK sounds intriguing – is it very masculine or more unisex? Congratulations to your parents, too!
I’m quite into kayaking now. I like that we paddle with our own tempo, and we can experience a lot of nature which is lovely.
Amyris Homme holds that absolutely masculine element bu woman should do fine with it. Can’t forget to mention that there’s also Amyris Femme which is even better than Homme version!
Hi Lucas! Congrats to your parents? How many years?
Thanks dear! They’re married since 1989 so it’s their 23rd anniversary.
My parents have been married over 60 years. My mother is a saint.
That’s a lot of time together. I’m sure she really is.
Congratulations to your parents! Have a wonderful time.
Thank you dear! You have a good weekend too! There’s not much time until you’ll be leaving for Japan.
Forgot to mention my two Pradaholic pleasures! Thanks to a nice friend from the States I got an anticipated sample of Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue which I find amazing.
Also just swapped my unloved samples for Prada Infusion de Fleurs d’Orangers, which I also didn’t have to try yet!
Glad you got the Absolue Lucas!
I’m glad too. Actually I think I might go for a full bottle. It smells different comparing with my Infusion d’Homme and another Prada will do great in my collection 🙂
I am wearing a new sample of Romantina by Juliette Has a Gun. I had read a review that said it had violet note. I smell it a bit. The dry down is a bit boring, I don’t think I will be getting it. Very nice that
Nam Nam gave me a sample to test.
I did visit Portland Oregon’s Perfume House this summer. It is so worth a drive!!! Even in San Francisco I would have to go to several stores to see all that is in his one shop. Niche and mainstream old and new.
So happy to hear that you had a good trip to Our Lady of the Scented Wrists (TPH)! I’m completely spoiled by having Our Lady almost literally around the corner from my apartment. Did you notice that they’ve expanded their website? Looks like they’re trying to join the online purchasing world, so if you got some samples and want something, that’s now an option. Makes me happy, because I want them to survive! (even though I buy a lot of perfume online, myself)
Me too! But I find going in there is overwhelming. Either I have something specific in mind, and they (believe it or not) don’t have it, or I just can’t fall in love with something on a whim because there is just too much there.
You’re a Portlander, too?
You’re right, of course, that it can be overwhelming. Actually, one of my “goals” this summer was to use a gift certificate that was given to me last fall, but I still haven’t because I can’t figure out what to buy! Most of my newest infatuations have been with independent perfumes (SSS and Andy Tauer and the likes), which they don’t carry. I need to find a nice L’Artisan or maybe a classic Patou or something, but I don’t really know where to start.
They seemed to have most if not all of the l’Artisan line. Maybe just go and focus on those?
I was there last week & Pam said they are going to be carrying Andy Tauer. She was thrilled that he actually visited the store, and she was very impressed with what a genuine, nice person he was.
It’s a good thought. I own Tea for Two, and I like it very much but there don’t seem to be a lot of occasions when I really want to wear it (too smokey for work, too strong in hot weather, etc.). I also bought my father Patchouli Patch, as a more sophisticated replacement for his patchouli oil. It seems I’ve tried a few others, but it’s a big line. Do you have any favorites?
Oh Nita! That’s great news! Did she give you a sense of when that might start? Maybe I’ll hold my gift certificate and get Une Rose Chypree.
No, I’m sorry but I don’t remember whether she said when the Tauer fragrances would be in stock because I knew I wouldn’t be back in town until next year.
By Our Lday of Scents you mean???
Sorry, I think you meant Perfume House, I am not fully awake.
🙂 I was chatting with someone here that The Perfume House is really a sacred site, so we dubbed it Our Lady of the Scented Wrists. Can’t recall who that was now!?
I adore the Perfume House but I live in Eugene and do most of my purchasing online. I am glad to hear that they’re stepping up their web presence. Last time I was there they said they welcomed phone orders, but I never followed up.
This place sounds like a good reason to visit Portland!
Yes, and it’s in my fabulous Hawthorne District, which is a great “Portland” experience in itself. Very hip (so good people-watching), MANY restaurant and shopping options, and not far from the absolutely beautiful Laurelhurst park (designed by the Olmsted brothers). (Don’t mean to sound like an advertisement, but I love where I live!)
Hi All, I think the new Prada Infusion d’iris is amazing to. I actually have this on one arm and Infusion d’ris EDP on the other arm. I love both but can only afford one right now. I’m having trouble deciding. Would love any helpful tips to help me decide. Happy Weekend everyone!
Buy the new Infusion d’Iris (the Absolue)! It has more lasting power, it develops more over time, and it’s just a better, more complete, more nuanced perfume composition. Of course, if you like lighter scents, you can disregard my advice – I think the Absolue is very much about the benzoin-tonka-musk base so a much more forceful scent.
Thank you LYS, I’m new to this so I need all the help i can get. I’m really leaning towards Absolue.
I really like both the EdP & the Absolue, I’d have a hard time picking. The Absolue is possibly the better scent, but the EdP is perfect for everyday, no-brainer wear.
Hi Robin, Thank you for your imput. Your review on both Infusion d’iris and Absolue got me hooked. I have two boys with special needs both in wheelchairs. I really like the idea of no-brainer wear. I have to many other things to worry about but I still want to smell good. Plus perfume always cheers me up.
Oh, then I’m sure you’re busy! I have ended up with bottles of both, but wish they did smaller bottles — would love to have 30 ml of each.
Both are really beautiful scents. My edp is empty now, and I have a hard time choosing wich one to buy. I will need at least one of them.
Hi Lise, I really like both Infusion d’iris and the Absolue to.I guess I can’t go wrong either way. I hope they find your beautiful neighbor. It sounds like you live in a wonderful and supportive community. I hope you hear good news about the girl soon.
Wearing Calyx right now. Glad that the bottle hasn’t spoiled, even though it’s a couple of years old. But I think that one of the reasons why I haven’t worn it much is because this bottle doesn’t smell the same to me as the version I used to wear many, many years ago. No doubt it has been reformulated (and perhaps that could be why it hasn’t gone off!), and it got me wondering if it will have been reformulated again after the demise of Prescriptives. In my experience, old classics that are absorbed by other companies invariably suffer. Does anyone know what the latest Calyx is like?
Jillie, I wore Calyx in the 80s and have been afraid to try the current version. If I have a chance to do so, I will report back on one of these weekend polls someday.
Of course, most things seem to have changed, and I’m never sure if it’s the formula, my nose or my frame of reference – probably all three in most cases! 😉
Thanks nozknoz, that would be great. I suspect my nose is beginning to fade these days (!), and I suppose I might be remembering certain smells as better than they were ……….
I wore Calyx for about 10 years from when it launched. I stopped because it didn’t smell right and returned the bottle… It made me sad. I’ve been afraid to try the current version as well – I’d rather remember the original.
I do miss Prescriptives – it was about the only counter where I could find the right warm red lipstick…
SOTD is Jardin du Poete
It’s true, NancyG: there orange/red and red/orange lipsticks really lit up my face like nothing I’ve found since!
Noz, have you tried Nars’ lipstick in Beautiful Liar? Ignore the dippy Harlequin-romance name; it’s the best reddish-orange lipstick I’ve ever worn. I’m on my fourth tube now. (I’m super pale with neutral undertones, green eyes, and auburn hair, if that helps.) I also really like MAC’s Chili, which is more matte than the NARS and is more red than orange.
Thanks, Emily, I’ll look for those. I’ve never really tested the NARS line, aside from the multiples.
Prescriptives was part of Estee Lauder anyway though…not sure it really “changed hands” in that sense.
Good point!
I just got back from a Tai Chi class and need to get to the supermarket, so no perfume yet. There are still many summer launches that I haven’t tried yet, and several fall launches that sound interesting but by far what I’m most looking forward to is receiving my pre-order of Seville a l’Aube, so that I can finally spritz on a whole cloud of it!
I also ordered Chandler Burr’s S01E03 from OpenSky but haven’t received it yet. Really hoping it is something interesting that I can’t identify so that I can take advantage of the “blindfold” effect (trying a perfume unswayed by the names and marketing hype).
Also, I’m looking for a good health-related blog. I’m so spoiled by NST and other great perfume blogs – I haven’t found anything close for health so far. I do look at the Real Age website from time to time. It has good information nicely presented, but it doesn’t have any real conversations going on, and it has some commercial ties that one has to take into account. Any suggestions?
That “blindfold effect” is interesting, isn’t it? I often am torn between sniffing “blind” and doing research first when I’m trying a new scent that I don’t know from reputation. My usual routine is to sniff it first, take some notes, and then look it up. I notice more about the scent after I do the research, but I like to try them without bias first.
I hadn’t really thought about it, but since samples and decants usually come in simple containers, one can reduce the impact of marketing and other influences by trying them in this way. That’s a good idea!
I happened to try SL Santal Majuscule before focusing on the reviews, and was surprised when I did read them. It doesn’t smell at all to me like the descriptions. I think I must be sensitive to some of the sharper notes. It’s the greatest divergence I’ve observed between my experience of the scent and what is described by the reviewers.
That *is* surprising! Not sure I’ve had quite that drastic a difference, but I do remember trying Serge Noire, getting all excited and then I read Kevin’s review–he HATED it! It made me laugh how much he panned it!
I don’t know if there is a blog associated, but Lance Armstrong’s website, livestrong dot org, has lots of health info. It isn’t just about cancer by a long stretch.
Thanks, Sapphire, that’s a good suggestion. I’ve occasionally run across it on searches but haven’t explored it yet.
I also practice tai chi! I needed to step down from boxing, but wanted to stay in the martial arts world.
I am on the list for Seville a l’aube as well and can’t wait! I’ll be on vacation before that but hopefully there’ll be a bottle waiting for me to pick up! It’s such a beautiful, complex scent!
I only started Chen-style Tai Chi last fall and have never done any other martial art, so I’m still at a baby level, but I can already tell that it can have a powerful effect on the way the body works.
Last week I found my new apartment and they had a special of $500 off the first month’s rent so I was, with perfect perfumista logic, going to buy myself something new with the money I”saved” (not that I don’t need it for the next month’s rent, etc). I had been in Henri Bendel’s the night before and had tried on HdP Rare Edition Petroleum and really liked how it smelled sort of minerally on me. Unfortunately, the SA was so aggressive that I chose not to buy the perfume just to get away from her–she was practically shoving the sniffer funnel of Violette Blanc in my face since SHE liked it so much. I really can’t stand aggressive salespeople. If she had just told me, “Let me know if you have any questions ” she probably wouldn’t have lost a close to $200 sale.
This is in sharp contrast to my favorite SA–Saint Ellen of Saks (Boston) who just sent me some samples of my favorite scents. I WILL be making the trip back to Boston when I get my tax refund to buy Central Park West and maybe Incense Oud from her.
Wow, what a shame! I really prefer to be left alone to smell in peace.
Am pretty sure Aedes carries the line if I want the immediate gratification thrill once I move, or I can always do mail order. Since they’re not the only place that carries it, I’m not worried. Just wish the first floor Bendel’s people weren’t so predatory.
Congrats on your new apartment (and that extra $500). Since I live in the Boston area, I’ll have to go to Saks and request Saint Ellen 🙂 I need to connect with a SA in the area.
She’s the Kilian rep but she’s also knowledgable about the Bonds and she ‘s enthusiastic about perfume without being aggressive. She’s mailed me samples, held Kilian samples for me when they first came out, absolutely loves giving me samples. (Of anything that there’s samples of, not just Kilian). She is the perfect perfume SA. Definitely get to know her if you’re in Boston
What a gem!
Oooh, she sounds great. I live in the western suburbs but work right in Boston so will have to make a trip to Saks during lunch hour or after work. Thanks!
I’m wearing the remnants of Thierry Mugler’s Angel Le Gout de Parfum that I wore for last nights dinner party to celebrate: A. Our upcoming honeymoon, B. My birthday as we will be in London on said honeymoon, and C. our marriage, at 75 days, has surpassed that of Kim Kardashian’s.
I’ve recently been on a lactonic kick lately, desperately trying to find perfumes with strong milk notes in them. Can anybody recommend one or six? ^_^
Gucci Rush.
Guerlain Mitsouko.
Congrats on all of the above!
I’d recommend Penhaligon’s Amaranthine. (Condensed Milk but not too sweet)
Yes, congrats!
2nd the Amaranthine, it’s stunning – milky, with banana notes and some kind of white florals.
There was a limited edition Jo Malone called Milk and Honey, which my favorite of the tea layering scents she did last (?) summer. It was pretty sheer, as many of her scents can be, so I didn’t make a purchase. Not sure if it’s still available or not. . .
And I just recently sampled BK Back to Black, which definitely has that milkiness in the dry down. (As an aside, I was sort of glad/sort of sorry that I didn’t just totally adore this scent–seems right up my ally, but so expensive, maybe I should be grateful?)
I think Kenzo Amour would be worth a try, Anne
Good thought!
I second this one. Very milky!
Congrats, Anne!
Lann-Ael–milk and cereal
Artemisia–nectarines, vanilla cream and some white florals
Theorema (discontinued)– mild orange egg nog
Hi Everyone. I just have a few questions today. I like having lotions to compliment my perfume. I have recently become interested in the Bond 9 fragrances, but noticed many of them do not have lotions with them. I am thinking about purchasing Chinatown, which does have a lotion, but also Sag Harbor, which does not. Does anyone know if any of the other lotions in Bond 9 would go well with this perfume? Also, curious what others think of this line. The products are quite expensive, but are they worth it?
Thanks.
Chinatown is great. Sag Harbor is their newest one, so maybe give it a few months to see if they have a matching lotion. Maybe call them directly to ask their recommendations or to see if they plan on getting a matching lotion
I did call them and they recommended the signature lotion. Maybe because they both contain oud. Not sure.
I think people’s opinions differ on whether they’re worth it. They are very expensive, and some people (including me) are not impressed because the formulas aren’t always that inspired and the raw ingredients are clearly not that rare; but then if you love them and you don’t love anything else as much as them, they must be worth it, right?
If you like a lotion to compliment your perfume, then that too is your taste, right? Like people who love matching wallets for their handbags. I always use different skin products because my skin gives me a lot of hassle and I don’t want to fuss with finding things that match my various perfumes anyway. But if you want it, you want it! Sag Harbor is kind of beachy – do they have a Fire Island lotion? Or perhaps you can find a complimentary scent from another line? I hear the new Scent Bar line at Target is very good, and maybe their Cabana scent would be complimentary?
I will have to try your idea with the scent bar. We have a Target that I can check out. Thanks for the suggestion.
I’ve tried a few and thought they were good, but something would really have to take my breath away to justify those prices…
You can make your own scented lotion by spritzing fragrance into a dab of lotion in the palm of your hand, mixing them by gently rubbing between your palms, and the spreading as you like on your body. I love doing this but I admit that it may not work with fragrances that have very delicate top notes, as it may smother them. But if it works, it saves you having to buy a whole new product.
I’,m in Australia and a department store near me carried the Bond No 9s for a while, but it did not last. There were so many of them, and many Australians, me included, do not know New York well enough to understand the place references. The Bonds only came in huge bottles and they were SO expensive!
I think my problem with Bond is that they put a lot of effort into marketing and packaging, and not so much into the juices.
I mean spritzing fragrance into UNSCENTED lotion, naturally! Sorry.
Thanks Annemarie. I never thought of putting the perfume in unscented lotion. Great idea.
I second the idea of using an unscented lotion and spritzing with the scent of your choice. Mercola.com (a health/medical website) has a *great* unscented and organic lotion. HIghly recommended!
I do this as well – it not only saves money but lets me use the type of lotion I want, without harmful additives (which many brand-name lotions have).
Yes indeed. I have a few Estee Lauder scented creams they are not good moisturisers. The opposite actually; I find them drying.
If you own a big bottle of perfume, mixing it with your own lotion is a great way to use it up.
Hi all!
I have several FB and lots of full or partialy used samples I would like to swap. Im not a big ebay person, and i’d rather get new stuff to smell than sell stuff. What places do you suggest for swapping? Any favorites? I poked at makeupalley, but it seems really overwhelming.
Thanks for any help!
-stars
We harassed Robin about hosting a swap here on NST last year, but it doesn’t look like we poked her hard enough! I tried Swapmania for the first time this year, and it was a positive experience. Can’t recall when that happens, though . . .
I was going to do one, then Perfume Posse did another big swap. How about I promise now we’ll do one in mid-September? I’ll go put it on my calendar now.
Yippee! Have to think what I might have to contribute! (And stock up on decant bottles . . . )
Ooh–right near my birthday. Yummy
That sounds great! I got in on the last Swapmania on Perfume Posse, and it was a very positive experience. I still have more stuff to swap away, though. September sounds good–the weather is not so hot, so fewer worries about stuff potentially spoiling in the heat, but still well before all the holiday craziness at the end of the year.
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! *rubs hands together* The Posse Swap is such happy chaos–someone once knitted me a hat!–I can’t imagine what will happen over here with so many commenters. I’m very much looking forward to it though and hope I will be free that day (or two).
Yay! I’ve wanted to try a swap but haven’t been brave enough. I would totally do it here though.
A swap on here woukd be awsome!
I don’t think MUA can be beat, when it comes to swapping. Sure it’s a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get into it, it’s a great community with such friendly and helpful people. Many throw in extra stuff into their swaps, and some things (like a 5 ml decant of Bel Respiro,) have just blown me away with their generousity. Can’t say enough good things about that website, I’ve learned and sampled so many things thanks to those girls 🙂
Agree w/ all of that!
I’ll have to take another look. Thanks!
SOTD: R’Oud Elements (Kerosene)
Tried Clive Christian V last weekend in Nieman Marcus, the opening seemed a lot like R’Oud Elements but quickly diverted. I wish I had asked for a sample or small decant so that I could wear it a few more times, but from what I remember it was lovely. The ending seemed similar to one of the incenses by CDG (Ourzazate?), very nice.
Awaiting the arrival of TF Noir, sounds lovely from the listed notes.
Disappointed with the Cartier Declaration Cologne I got last weekend, although I like it better than the Essence, it doesn’t seem to have as much cumin (or whatever that high-pitched screeching note is), but still manages to give me a little bit of a headache.
Love, love, love my new bottles of Bn9 I Love NY Marriage Equality and Chinatown. Can’t believe I waited until recently to try Chinatown, this for me is the best frag from Bn9. I’m a guy who digs Chinatown, who knew?
Was that the V for men or for women?
(and I think Chinatown would be great on a man, and for that matter, they ought to do a men’s version — I think it’s still their best scent)
It was V for men. I had like 5 other fragrances on my arms/wrists that day, so I will definitely need to try it all by itself again.
I’ve reached the point in the summer where I’m just tired, tired of the choice between sweating and being shut up in air-conditioning, as well as tired of my summer dresses, the lack of lettuce (my farm share stops producing delicate greens in late July when it really gets hot), and the smells of my hot apartment.
Am going through the lightest, freshest things I have just trying not to feel sticky and cranky. Hierbas de Ibiza is surprisingly pleasing on this front today, and my Gin Fizz is making me pretty happy this week.
What else are people wearing in the heat? Love to hear some suggestions besides Atelier colognes!!
When I’m hot, I love Guerlain’s Herba Fresca with its minty tones (no, I don’t smell like toothpaste), Jo Malone’s Grapefruit and lemony O de Lancome. Also, when I’m really hooooot, I use L’Occitane’s Verbena body gel( which must have menthol in it) – really cooling after a bath. Then I collapse on the sofa with a fan blowing over me!
I too feel like sitting all the time. With fans blowing on me. But then I don’t get any exercise and I get cranky!
I have been meaning to pick up a mini of O; I’ll have to look for a Jo Malone Grapefruit too, I don’t have that one. (I’m ok with there being at least a few Guerlains I don’t own. 🙂 )
Eau d’Hadrien and the oils I got during my last trip to Cairo (orange blossom, white floral, etc.) That’s basically all I got taht I can stand wearing when it’s really humid. Most of my collection is orientals, patchoulis, and vanillas.
I’m actually amazed at how many recs I’ve seen for Eau d’Hadrien in hot weather. I haven’t smelled it since my first year of serious sniffing – I have to dig it out and try it again. Thank you!
Guerlain Vetiver is like a blast of AC.
Agree!
Nice!
I’m tired too – for the opposite reason! It’s the end of winter here and I’m sick of being shut up in air conditioning, sick of heavy clothes and heavy scents, sick of cooking the ‘winter warmers’ that seemed so welcome at the start of winter. Sick of cutting winds and bitter frosts and short days. Sigh. (Am I making you feel better or worse?? 🙂 )
Eau de Givenchy is my summer staple. And a few weeks ago I bought a bottle of Un Jardin sur le Nil, and I am so looking forward to wearing it. Too cold right now. I also have a sample of Goutal’s Eau de Camille and I’m wondering if it will do better in the heat. At the moment it seems harsh.
A little better – at least we are sick of things together!
Eau de Camille was weird to me too. I’ll be interested to hear if it changes with the weather.
Can you try something not-usual-for-winter but not yet spring? Different floral? Leather?
It’s really not fair – the older I get the more the seasons seem to go by in the blink of an eye, yet I still have time to get tired of them!
Thanks, yes I wore Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere today, which worked well. It has a hint of spring freshness in it but can hold its own in a cold wind. And lo! This afternoon the wind dropped and the sun came out! It’s a lovely afternoon.
I find Eau de Camille the perfect remedy for a too hot, sweltering day. Perhaps you’ll like it better once those days arrive for you?
Yes, I am looking forward to Camille hurling all her cool green-ness at a really hot, sticky day. I think it she will win!
Unseencenser, I know just what you mean, and we’ve got another – at least – 6 weeks of this weather. Sigh.
I’ve been wearing the PdN Eaux (I have Eau Exotique and Eau d’ete) a lot this summer – they’re good for cutting through the humidity.
Hmm, I haven’t tried those eaux – thanks for the tip, I’ll see if I can find some! Yes, sigh, six more weeks, and my new fall clothes languish in the closet awaiting the cooler weather…
I’m another fan of O de Lancome for when its humid and simply sweltering. Sisley’s Eau de Campagne has also been a longtime summer staple thats never failed me, as has Cristalle edt.
My motto is spray til wet and repeat as needed. 😉
In the mood I’m in “spray till wet” sounds extremely dirty.
Which isn’t a bad thing. 🙂
I really need to pick up some O de Lancome, eh?
😀
Lol – Works for me! 😀
I agree with Jillie with Herba Fresca – I’ve only just discovered my love of its fresh green scent recently. I wear Cristalle eau Verte and Miller Harris Terre d’Iris. All worn with just one spritz to the decollete. It’s fine in the heat and humidity to spray more but in the ac in the office, it feels a bit much.
Highly recommend Jacomo Silences, Eau de Rochas, and Cristalle EDT. The L’Occitane Verbena EDT is really nice, too. But for a cheap cool-off, go to Wal-Mart (or the equivalent) and get a $9 bottle of Love’s Fresh Lemon body mist, and stick it in the fridge. I did this when I was on vacation in Utah, and it was a lifesaver.
I’m sick of summer too. I feel like I’ve been locked up in air conditioning for months which is just as bad as being locked up all winter. Worse actually because at least in winter you are happy to be inside where it’s warm. In summer I want to go out and work in the yard but it’s just been too darn hot to do anything. I’ve been spritzing away but I really don’t have any of those citrusy summer scents. I probably should get a bottle of a nice cologne. Maybe I’d enjoy the heat more.
It’s HOT here too and it seems that by August, I go for super tart and refreshing. Recent finds include Baiser Vole EDT. Pamplemousse is another note I crave in summer…. DSH pamplemousse is delightful, as is Hermes pamplemoussemouse rose and guerlain pamplemousse. Complete opposite, is Reminiscence Patchouli Elixer. This is delightful patchouli, and I love it in the heat. It IS super long lasting and has great sillage, so I take it easy. I often get compliments on this one.
I live in Houston, a capital of heat and humidity. My go-to summer scent is Hermes Eau de Merveilles, also I have the Elixir and the flanker Eau Claire de Merveilles. I find all of them refreshing and not too strong. I also love a fragrance I bought in Seville last year, Agua de Sevilla. If your look a bit you can find some place to buy it on line. It has orange blossom, jasmine, papaya, and some sort of minty or herby element that keeps it from being overwhelming. I second (third) the recommendation of O! de Lancome.
Forgot to say, I also enjoy fig fragrances in the hot weather, especially Diptyque Philosykos. It’s kind of bracing and upbeat.
I live in Houston too, and Philosykos is a favorite of mine.. I only have a couple sample vials but I really want a full bottle. One of these days…. Oddly enough, though, even though it’s still like 1000 degrees outside and a zillion percent humidity, my scent “cravings” have already shifted to cooler-weather territory. I’ve been really wanting orientals and resiny stuff lately for some reason.
They do carry the Diptyque line at Kuhl-Linscomb, have you shopped there? It’s a must-see (mus-smell) perfume destination. I know what you mean, I’ve been doing some rose scent sampling recently too even though they are a bit “heavy” for our hot weather.
Oh yes, I’ve been to Kuhl-Linscomb. Had I less restraint that place would be very dangerous to my bank account. 🙂 I’ve resisted temptation so far, but I try as many things as I have skin space for. I almost got Philosykos on one visit, but they only had the larger bottle, and I wasn’t quite prepared to spend $130 or whatever it was. One of these days, it will be mine. I’ve been tempted by a couple of the CdG Incense series there too… and the L’Artisans.. and Serge Lutens.. and.. it goes on.
I’ve been wearing my vintage White Shoulders cologne. It comes in a splash bottle and I use it pretty liberally. It’s perfect for summer on me. Runners up are Inoui and L’heure Convoitee but they’re .both wonderful in any season
I seem to be in a rose mood this summer–I’ve spent most of the last month or two switching between Nostalgie and Lipstick Rose, and just yesterday reminded myself of my sample of Une Rose Chypree. I thought maybe I was ready to dig myself out of this rose-infused rut but URC was so beautiful yesterday in the heat! I really may need to buy a bottle of that one.
Seems odd because before this summer, I enjoyed switching up to a new scent pretty much every day (if not a couple times a day). Now I find it sort of nice to look forward to the same scent again and again. Anyone else vacillate like this?
Yeah, I’m burned out on sampling and decant-hopping lately. The humid and hot weather we’ve had here lately also makes me more weary of trying out new scents, because some things can become real nightmares when they “bloom” in the heat.
I’ve also just got lazy, I think. I like wearing things that I know I’ll feel happy in, and appreciating what I’ve got instead of taking a risk on a sample or something I’ve only worn a few times.
Dominika, I think that the sense of risk, that “maybe I’ll like it, maybe I won’t” is a big part of my rut. I’m enjoying the safety of scents that I know, care about, and feel familiar!
I’ve been enjoying rose scents lately too ranging from T’aif to Juliette Has a Gun Lady Vengeance to Kilian Rose Oud. I’m in the variation mode now but I share your experience of having some periods where I only want to wear one fragrance for a while.
Hi Marjorie Rose. I try a lot of scents but I always like it when I take a break from it and just stick with one for a while. Need to give my FBs the love and attention they deserve. Also, I keep finding more and more to like about a fragrance if I wear it and enjoy it for days or more.
(I’ve been stingy with my skin time for new releases lately which might mean I’ll be doing the fragrance monogamy thing again some time real soon.)
There’s definitely a feeling that I need to be sure to be enjoying what I have, and not just always trying to add to my collection! But it surprises me that I’d stick with just a couple of scents for so long. I have enough options that I could still spritz something new every day just from one of my FBs and not repeat for quite some time. . . (which is a thought I generally would be too embarrassed to share outside this community!)
The Dallas heat is wearing me out too! Loving Chanel’s Cologne and Guerlain’s AA Tiare and Mimosa in the heat. Fall will come – won’t it?
I’m really burned out on trying new stuff right now (maybe because I’ve done a lot of testing lately and haven’t found anything that rocks my world). That said, I hardly ever wear the same scent two days in a row, unless it’s a Manoumalia kind of weekend. But I do have a rotation of five or so scents that I return to more than any others, and that I usually wear on workdays (right now the Gang of Five consists of Dzongkha, No. 19, Avignon, Aromatics Elixir, and Ninfeo Mio).
Oh, that’s tough when you sample a lot and nothing moves you! That’s actually part of my conundrum with my gift certificate to the Perfume House referenced above–I’ve sample much but been moved by little! Don’t want to buy just to buy–but I miss the joy of that new scent that thrills me!
Well, I hope something comes along for you that seems gift-certificate-worthy. (I have some birthday cash to dispose of, and am kind of in the same boat — oh, poor us! — but I do have a Tauer discovery set on the way, so perhaps that will inspire my nose.)
Thanks! Poor us, indeed! It’s what a friend of mine would call a “first world problem!”
SOTD & E; an epic combo of SL A La Nuit, Sa Majeste La Rose and Jo Loves Gardenia. It’s a heady, intoxicating combo for sure.
My daugther celebrated her 20th birthday on Wednesday and her father gave her Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille, which I plan on borrowing on occasions when the weather cools.
Lady Murasaki, this epic combination seems just right for celebrating the confluence of the Queen’s Jubilee, London 2012 Olympics and Will and Kate’s first wedding anniversary.
Oooooh I like it! Epic triad of layering!
Yes, it’s Gone wth the Wind kind of epic! lol.
It sounds it! Is the Jo Loves Gardenia much like the JM Gardenia?
No, I don’t think so, Robin. JO Loves Gardenia is a more realistic rendition of the gardenia and a soliflore. Because it’s one dimensional, I like to layer it with other fragrances.
Thanks!
SOTD- Canal Flower body cream layered with the new fragrance sample I got from N.M. Orangers en Fleurs and it is pleasant together not sure if I want to get a full bottle of this although I really loved it at first sniff it also layers well with the Chanel no. 5 bathing and body powder and cream it was gorgeous together, orange blossom, Turkish rose and tuberose with a spiciness to it.
Wow, that does sound nice! I’m going to have to try that.
Today I’m wallowing in Paco Rabanne La Nuit to match the sultry, heavy, humid weather. Nothing like lollin’ around smelling like honey.
Sounds good to me!
SOTD: Oud imortal BYREDO’S, it’s yummy.
I have not tried that one yet.
Hi. I’m a relative surrendertochance newbie as I try to make buying decants my last resort when sampling scents. Was wondering, what’s considered a good sale there (or at theperfumedcourt)? 20%? 30%? What kinds of discounts do they go up to and is there a time of year to expect a good sale?
Lys, Surrender to Chance is quite new (broken away from The Perfumed Court this spring). If you haven’t done so yet, I recommend getting onto their email list. They have monthly discount codes, and it seems that 5-10% is common. Because STC is so new, it seems that they’re doing more discounts than usual, with specific deals on specifically themed scents, with 15% seeming a common choice. I don’t think I’ve seen anything over 20% over at TPC (or elsewhere).
This is really helpful Marjorie Rose, thanks!
It’s hot. It’s humid. I want to go shopping but haven’t left the house yet today. Had to wait for the fridge repair guy. That’s done and now I’m itching to go somewhere but I know the traffic and stuff will be nutty. It’s a sales tax holiday this weekend and it seems that people love to shop when the government isn’t getting any tax from it. I’d like to buy something but don’t know what I want. Well, I want a laptop but probably don’t need one. And I want another bottle of something but said I was on a spending freeze for fragrance and probably don’t need any at the moment.
I made my first attempt at making relish today. I’ve canned stuff before but this was the first time I tried relish. I think I may have over chopped the veggies a teeny but but I think it came out fine just the same. I’d like to do make some jelly or jam too, but not today. No, today I want to spend money.
Clothing? Something for the house? Something health related like an exercise ball or weights? Books?
I’m one of those women who hates shopping for clothes. I really need to be in the mood for that. I’ll sleep on it and either the mood will pass or I’ll go shopping tomorrow.
Zero will power. I figured that the closest to s sale on Chanel would be no sales tax. (who needs an enabler when you can come up with that kind of justification all by yourself) So I caved in to my Coco craving and got a small bottle of the EDP. The shelves were a bit bare at Ulta and it was the last small Coco EDP so I guess I wasn’t the only one thinking that way this weekend.
Nice 🙂 I wouldn’t feel too bad, it is Coco after all – you’d have to buy some sooner or later 😉
That’s what I thought too. My No.5 was lonely and needed another Chanel buddy.
Hi Poodle, CoCo EDP is beautiful. Great choice hope you enjoy it.
I bought the new Guerlains Rose Nacree and Encens Mythique d’Orient recently, absolutely lovely! I got a multitude of samples with the package that I’m trying out. SOTD is Amouage Interlude Man, very smokey!
So jealous – I ordered decant samples, but STC is restocking, so my lemmings and I are sulking while we wait to even try these. They sound so good and it’s Guerlain – I’m sure you’ll be glad you got them, Eva!
I thought the Guerlain Deserts would be cold-weather scents but IMO they really are for hot days. Can’t say enough good things about the Encens.
Forgot to say, SOTD is Fourreau Noir.
Arrrrrrgggghhhhh! I have just spent the last five hours trying to resolve internet issues. We had a power outage this morning (which seems to be a semi-weekly event for us), and when it came back on, the internet was out. A phone call to the cable company (it is cable internet) didn’t help. I tried bypassing the router and going directly from the modem to the computer, and that still didn’t work, so I bought a new modem. I went to install it, and eventually got a message that the new device needed to be activated, for which I needed my account number, which I could find in my bill. OK, we have paperless online billing, so the only was to get my account number would be to log on to my online account, which I could not do because I HAD NOT INTERNET CONNECTION!! Finally, I found an old paper bill that had the account number, and everything is working now. I think I should send the bill for the new modem to the power company. After all, they fried it, so shouldn’t they pay for it? Along with the TV, DVD player, two CD players, a garage door opener, and a rotisserie, to name all the things that have been fried by power outages. And yes, the modem was plugged into a surge protector, which apparently did not protect it well enough.
I think I need some perfume therapy to help me deal with the stress!
Spritz madly and carry on, m’dear.
I agree with Mals, spritz madly. What a frustrating day you’ve had! Yeah, spritz madly and put that new modem to work and go online and buy yourself something new.
Whoa, how frustrating! You definitely need perfume therapy – in fact, you’d best order something at the top of your buy list before the power or internet go down again!
Ugh, I know the feeling. I’m always a bit amazed on each day that the net actually works for me, after all the stupid problems I’ve had with slow connections, viruses, bad service, password mix-ups and stupid account re-activation sagas with my provider .
Don’t get me started, or I’ll have to tell you all about how I had a similar internet issue, and spent 6 hours trying to convince AT&T that yes, they do provide me with internet service. They kept insisting they didn’t, although I pointed out that my online bill says they do and they bill me every month. They annoyed me so much that I finally kicked them to the curb and switched over to our cable provider. We’re at the mercy of Florida Power & Light here, so between their frequent outages and AT&T’s lousy service, I was pretty frustrated.
I’ll agree with everyone else; spritz away!!
I’m really very pleased with the cable internet we have, I just didn’t get much help from the person I talked to. Really, my main frustration is with the power company. If we hadn’t had that outage, I am sure the modem would not have gotten fried. It was probably just the last straw; I am sure the real problem was the dozens and dozens of outages we have had in the 2 1/2 years since we first got our internet service. I understand the power going out during a hurricane or tropical storm, but why does it go out on a hot, sunny August morning when there is hardly a cloud in the sky?
Aw, big hugs for you, Roses – I’ve been there as well, and it’s beyond infuriating! This kind of thing calls for serious measures, perhaps a dab or two of White Rose?
Actually, I did put on White Rose. This evening was my high school class reunion (30 years), and I honestly didn’t even feel like getting dressed up and going out, so I decided I needed a mood booster.
Yay – I hope it worked, and that you ended up having a fun evening!
It worked. White Rose never fails to make me feel good.
We went through this when our house got hit by lightning (the second time). You have my deepest sympathies.
Hard to stay crisp when it is 112 in the shade. I ventured out w/ a little spritz of Vetiver Tonka, neck only. It was up to the challenge. At NM I tried the new DK Woman on right tabula rasa (wrist), and to me it seems awfully similar to By by D&G. I used to love it. Now it just feels humid, and like someone else’s skin scent. I tried the new Givency on my right arm. Nice, but not for me.
Love “someone else’s skin scent”, great phrase.
Started out today with Lush 25:43, switched to Bvlgari The Rouge tonight for an evening of watching the Olympics. Wondering what tomorrow night’s closing ceremony will be like ……
I do like that Lush! And I missed the closing ceremony.
SOTD is Soivohle Jasmine Summer for a day filled with laziness, a wedding, and a Tiki party this evening. It mixes well with Eau d’Hadrien and other crisp summer spritzes. Spritz madly and carry on, y’all.
Sounds like a great day — hope the tiki party was fun!
Had a wonderful Fragrance Adventure Friday afternoon on my way home. Drove by the Plant Nursery in town, and they had a sign out front saying “30% off on Crape Myrtle” and “Tuberose is Finally Here.” I have been wanting to buy a tree to replace the overgrown Liquid Amber (did you know that they are related to Frankincense Trees, and the Native Americans use their bark for incense!?) that we had to cut down last year due to overgrowth.
Of course I made a quick right turn into their lot, found a tree I liked and reserved it for later pickup, and then started sniffing my way around the rose bushes and through the groundcovers till I found the tuberose plants. They each had a single tall stem topped with a cluster of white tubular flowers, and had, of course that fragrance. For some reason it was not as impressive as I was anticipating. It was sweet and mild, and very fresh. After the roses I’d been sniffing, it seemed a little one dimensional, or one- noted, and I had to think back that I haven’t really sniffed a real tuberose for about 30 years, from my aunt’s gardens. Sometimes the bottled stuff creates more of an impression than the real, natural scent!
Anyhow, the roses were much more intense, each one radically different from the next, some with very unroselike elements. Licorice? Chocolate? Apricots? Lemons?
All of this had a chemical/oily tinge to it, as we still had some lingering odors in the air from the refinery fire up at Richmond, and the beginnings of a spare the air warning for the rest of the weekend.
Yes, I am tired of summer, too. I’d love a refreshing rain!
So, back home today and I am googling information on rose habits and tuberose cultivation, wondering if I dare plant it near the jasmine, and if I should look at some gardenia plants.
How wonderful! We all smell a lot of perfume, but it’s great to test your perfume sense of smell against real flowers. Markets are good for this too. So next time someone remarks that a rose scented perfume has a tinge of apricot in it, you will know what they mean.
A few weeks ago I got to smell real frangipani for the first time in about 30 years, and it gives me a real idea of what to look for in a frangipani scent. And while I’m not a great gardener, I bought a single hyacinth plant in a pot yesterday (it is nearly spring here) to compare with my spring perfumes.
Of course it’s also really fun to get into the kitchen and cook with some of the lovely herbs and spices that we also know from our perfumes.
Poppie, which nursery was this? I also live in the Bay Area, and would love to know where to go to sniff some real tuberose. (Unfortunately I don’t have anywhere to plant anything, since our condo only has a small patio that gets very little sunlight. All my herbs died within a couple of months.)
I tried Peoneve by Penhaligon’s today and I loved it… until it came to the drydown. Sigh. Such happy sunny top notes, such a nice peony heart and such a non-descript greenish drydown. I’ll try to spray it next time to see if this will stretch the heart notes longer!
Tried a spritz of Dior’s Grand Bal late in the day after a smelly and unpleasant chore – and I think I’m in love. Beautiful, beautiful scent – a fragrance for women, not girls. French women, maybe. Too nice for sitting around the house, but there you are.
I got a sample of Dior’s Sensuelle from Sephora today which I’m told is actually Dior Addict 2 with a new name. I thought I tried Dior Addict 2 when it was first launched and didn’t like it, but now I’m liking it and I’m not a rose lover!
Funny to see all of the comments early in this thread that involved Infusion d’Iris Absolue — I stopped into Nordies after a hellaciously stressful workday on Friday for some perfume therapy, and made myself a little sample of IdIA. But I managed to get it all over my hands in the process, so I’ve already had a sneak preview of it on skin. I like it much better than the original, which alternately smelled like soap and nothing.
I also have a newly arrived STC order that’s keeping me busy. Last night I busted out my sample of Seville a l’Aube. I like it, but can’t decide if I need a bottle. I didn’t get any incense from it, which was disappointing — it was awfully tempting to nudge it along with a spritz of Avignon. Today I tried my sample of AG Mon Parfum Cherie — the opening came dangerously close to cough-syrup territory, but I did appreciate the full-bodied patchouli that later emerged. Again, not sure I need a bottle, but I’ll enjoy using the rest of my sample. Also tried Dangerous Complicity, one of the two new ELdOs, and I utterly fail to see what’s at all dangerous about it. Dangerously boring, maybe?
Other people have noted the cough syrup effect in Mon parfum cherie par Camille too. I don’t get that myself, but I certainly get a strong blast of earthy patchouli! I like it a lot but I doubt I will wear it often enough to justify a FB.
There were a few minutes when the fruity notes in the opening started to seem more like fake grape flavor than luscious ripe plums, but thankfully that phase passed quickly. The patchouli is divine, though.
I’m with you on the Dangerous Complicity. How in the world could anyone sniff that and come up with that name is beyond me. It’s not dangerous. It’s not sexy. It’s not skank. It smells pretty, like a nice soft clean floral to me. I don’t dislike it but it’s completely inoffensive and not at all what I thought it would be. I’ll wear it to bed because it’s so light on me I don’t think I’d waste the daylight hours with it.
I just resniffed and it smells a lot like a watered down Gucci Flora with a clean musk note to me.
That’s funny; I got an innocuous spicy confection, maybe with a hint of the promised rum-like notes, and some of the clean musk. But it was a rum concoction that wouldn’t smell suspect on a 16-year-old. Have you tried Afternoon of a Faun yet? I might try that one today.
Okay, Afternoon of a Faun was enjoyable enough at first — cool, green, and slightly peppery, with a bit of iris and an interesting undercurrent of immortelle — but now the immortelle is taking over and the whole thing seems to be giving me a headache. Gah.
So funny how everyone smells different things. That’s part of the fun of it all isn’t it? I get no spice or rum. I wish I had your nose for this one. I’d like spice and rum.
Poodle, it was really boring rum and spice, if that’s any consolation. You’re not missing anything earth-shaking.
SOTD is Fresh Citron de Vigne, a light and refreshing scent for me and perfect for all the errands I had to run today. I also love Eau d’Hadrian and Hermes UJSLNil in the heat and humidity. I have a question: I will be visiting in Baltimore in a few weeks; are there any good perfume stores there? Independents and/or high end department stores?
Wearing Un Jardin Sur Le Toit. Had a good time shopping, testing some new fragrances and watching to the new Batman movie..
My SOTD was my own concoction, consisting of jasmine attar, frankincense, rose, neroli, and vanilla, all in jojoba.
Not really buying much of anything right now because I’m apartment hunting.. good times. 😛 I’m trying to find a cheaper place so I have more money for things other than food and rent. Looking up complexes on apartmentratings.com has made the process a bit disconcerting, though. Anybody know how much stock you can put in things like this? I mean, I figure if the balance of reviews for a complex is really strongly positive or negative there might be something to that, but I’m not sure how much to trust it for the ones that are kind of in the middle. Anybody else use this site? It was recommended to me by a leasing agent at one of the complexes I looked at last weekend (probably the nicest of all of them, and of course that complex had a strong majority of positive reviews, but crazy high pet deposits – $800 for my two cats plus $10 or $15 per cat per month in pet rent – so I’m not sure I can do that).
Anyway.. more on-topic.. today I went to an aromatherapy workshop. It was a given by the owner of a local shop. We made an oatmeal-herb scrub, a brown sugar scrub, bath salts, and a room spray. It was fun.
Just started a tube of Aesop intensive body balm – it is heavenly – tangerine and sandalwood amongst other things. If anyone has smelt this and can think of a perfume that is similar please let me know – that would be awesome.
Has anyone had the opportunity to try Lady Gaga Fame yet? I’m gagging to smell it!
I have not smelled it but from what I’ve seen it sounds like it veers more into the fruity floral zone than anything else. I’ve read that while its nice it’s not earth shattering.
Am sitting in the rental house on Cape Cod watching the rain pour down (I know, we need it!) and am just glad that I brought my little burlap bag of LuckyScent summer samples to play with. So far I’m in love with Peoneve and Seville a l’Aube and have uncharacteristically preordered FBs of both. The L’Esprit Cologne Collection by TDC left me kinda cold, and I haven’t tried the others yet (just put on Un Jour d’Ete by Keiko Mecheri and am waiting to see how much , if any, musk will develop). Happy weekend, all!
Hopefully your weather will improve. Mom said the sun is out in Rhode Island and it’s stopped raining here so you should clear up soon. I think the next few days are supposed to be nice too.
Just finished watching the U.S. men’s basketball team win gold. Awesome!! Spain played a very good game to win silver.
Have a great weekend everyone! 😀
I lost a kitty yesterday and one is dying today. It’s an unbelievably hard time here for me. My cat yesterday was only five years old and a big handsome active orange tabby. He got saddle thrombus: blood clots thrown from the heart that blocked his femoral artery and paralyzed his legs. He was yowling and in terrible pain. I knew it was bad and took him to the emergency vet’s and they said the only thing to be done is euthanize him. I was so shocked and devastated. Then when I came home, I found my old cat Cleo who has been in decline for some time, losing weight, etc., was hanging her head and falling over. She is almost gone today, weak and limp, eyes glazed over. I have 12 cats but that doesn’t seem to lessen the pain when one goes. Sorry to report on such sad news but it’s what is occupying me. SOTD is rose oud which I find comforting and calming. It is beautiful and meditative. I also just have ordered the travel spray set from OJ London in Champaca. It will be my fourth order from there–I had a sample set and have gradually been working my way deciding what more to buy. It was between this one and Sampaquita, but the Champaca seems less sweet and more intriguing, with its elements of flower, green tea, and rice. It is also a calming scent. I am greatly in need of comfort right now and these seem to be helping.
Oh, Calypso, I am so very sorry for your loss. The unconditional love that our pets give us makes their passing devastating. You will be in my thoughts today dear.
So terribly sorry to hear of your pain. I’m sending positive thoughts and prayers your way.
I’m so sorry the hear that. I have lost many cats over the years and it is always terribly painful, even when they are old and you know it is coming. Each one is special in his or her own unique way and they leave such a gaping hole when they are gone.
I can only echo the heartfelt comments above. My thoughts are with you.
It is vastly difficult to lose one beloved pet, let alone two so close together. My thoughts are with you.
Oh, Calypso, I am so sorry. It’s so hard to lose our beloved animals. May their memories be a blessing to you.
So sorry to hear about your kitties. Losing a pet is just awful. I dread when that time comes. They bring so much happiness and love it’s tough to see them go.
Hugs and sympathy to you
I’m so sorry about your kitties, Calypso. Take good care of yourself.
Adding my sympathies, Calypso! Years ago, I rented the upstairs of a big house owned by an older woman who lived alone with her cats. In the course of a week, she’d lost 2 of her 3. I made my apologies and commented that “it is almost as bad as losing a family member.” In her ever-irascible nature, her response was “It’s worse. The cats are better company.”
So sorry to hear that 🙁 I once had a kitty that ran away after I moved out for college, and I still miss him sometimes.
I’m sorry for your loss, Calypso. Much sympathy.
Thank you everyone for so much sympathy and for your kind words. I think there are a lot of cat lovers here. My Cleo did pass away in the early afternoon. At least it was peaceful. I am still trying to overcome the feelings of inadequacy I had when my Sammy was in such agony for his last few hours on earth. It was so dreadful. I know eventually I will be able to remember more of all of the good and happy times. He was so friendly and outgoing even my neighbors have been crying over his loss.
A few years ago, my cat was victim of that awful tainted food mess, and died of kidney failure. One of the times that I went to check on him, as I approached his bed, I literally saw a white form rise up from his body and eventually disappear. The physical body didn’t actually die for another 12 hours. So during that last 12 hours when I normally would have worried, like you did, about his suffering, I realized that he had already passed over. I hope this helps ease your mind some about your own cat’s passing.
Wow that is amazing. And comforting.
This week has been a sad and scary one. A beautiful 16-year old girl in our neighbourhood has gone missing, and the “whole community” has been out searching for her. I hope and pray that she is still alive, and that that whomever has taken her are letting her go. She could be anywhere now, I guess, so I will post her picture here:
http://www.newsinenglish.no/2012/08/06/hundreds-join-search-for-missing-teen/
That’s awful, Lise. I hope she turns up safe and sound.
Thank you, Emily. One can only hope. She has been gone for a week now. My heart bleeds for her and her devastated family.
Oh that is really terrible. I too hope she will be found, and safe.
SOTD: First applied BK Pure Oud, then after a while I got a strange (and awful) celery note that I have never encountered before with many wearings. So, I applied BK Incense Oud, much better now!
Oud can be tricky. I tried Byredos take on oud the other day. It burned in my nostrils.
I am very disappointed in the masculine offerings from Ormonde Jayne. I ordered samples for Ormonde Man, Isfarkand, and Zizan. None of them shouted to me to buy a bottle or even a decant. I am wondering whether i should even look into sampling the feminine scents for my girlfriend or just forget about this line.
Give Ormonde Woman, Frangipani and Ta’if a try. Ormonde Woman is a woody, seductive jasmine, Frangipani is a soft, creamy frangipani and Ta’if is a warm, dusky rose. OJ Woman is the less sweet out of the three, I think.
I am seconding the rec. of Ormonde Woman. I am not a huge fan of the OJ line as a whole either. That being said I adore Ormonde Woman. I find it much more interesting than the man version.
Looking forward to not sweating away my SOTD!!….Can’t wait to get a whiff of Noir Epices and Musc Ravageur in the fall air!
Regards,
Steve
SOTD was Henri Bendel Incense & Musk.
I went to the see the Titanic exhibition at the Houston Museum of Natural Science with my parents today (they got free tickets somehow). There was a section in the exhibition that featured people who were on the ship and their belongings that were recovered from the wreckage after it was found in 1985.
One of the people in that section was a British perfumer named Adolphe Saalfeld. He survived but left behind the case of perfume samples he had been carrying with him. Those samples were retrieved from the wreckage nearly 100 years later, and amazingly enough, some of them still had some scent in them! Some of the vials were on display. I just wanted to know what they smelled like. Scratch-and-sniff wall labels, anyone?
There was a gift shop at the end of the exhibition, and in the shop they had a perfume for sale. I don’t know if it was based on or inspired by one of Saalfeld’s actual perfumes, the description didn’t say, but it would have been cool if it had been.
How fascinating! I had not been too interested in that exhibit before now but this makes me want to go see it. Did you try that perfume at all? Wonder what it was.
Yeah, I hadn’t really given the show much thought.. I hadn’t actually been to the science museum in some time even though I don’t live far from it. It was the free tickets. 🙂 I had been meaning to check out the revamped Paleontology hall, and I did that while I was there. It’s really nice.. they did a really great job with it.
Anyway… I did try the perfume in the shop. The notes listed on the sign next to it that I remember were lemon, rose, neroli, and amber, and I got all of them to varying degrees. I think the lemon and rose were the most prominent. The drydown is a little powdery. It’s not my style, but it’s nice. If you like florals, it’s certainly worth a try. It was $75 for a bottle.. I want to say 50ml but I don’t remember exactly.
I was curious about it too and thought I remembered that someone had actually produced scents based on those vials. Here it is:
http://www.qvc.com/Legacy-1912-Titanic-Fragrance-2.5-oz-Eau-de-Parfum.product.A228639.html
Oh.. thanks for the link.. that actually was the perfume that was being sold in the shop.
SOTD: Hermes Hiris.
It’s quite a cool late summerday here in Sweden and Mondy… so I had to have a soothing frag today.
By the way – this is my very first comment. I have been reading here for years, but never registered before 🙂
Hi and welcome, AnnBur! Hope you’ll chime in again.
