Can’t say I agree about Gucci Guilty – yuck. As for Ellie Saab, would much prefer to have seen Bottega Veneta win that category. Nice to see Angela Flanders being recognised.

If you watch these awards over the years, it’s clear that the excellence of the juice is not always a primary factor in who wins & who doesn’t.

Excellence… Is in The Nose of the Beholder, Now Isn’t It?

One man’s (or Woman’s) DRECK may be another’s MASTERPIECE!

That is quite true! But I do think it’s clear that even people who run these awards know it isn’t all about the juice — they’re awarding “the whole package” so to speak, and almost always the winner is a big seller. In fact, most of the awards systems (including the US Fifis) have separate categories that are meant to reward a truly excellent juice, as opposed the sorts of scents that usually win in the big categories.

But then that also implicates, you might say, that just because SOME think a Fragrance is Dreck that that then means that it cannot be seen by others as anything otherwise… big budget success or not.

meaning, that just because Gucci Guilty was a Big seller and a lot of PERFUMNISTAS Found it Unbearable, that it is not actually worthy to be seen otherwise by anything or anyone else… that it’s just Marketing and Budget and not actually that many of us think the fragrance is in all actuality, Really Very Good. Just because you don’t like it… you paint it with the brush that it didn’t succeed because of the JUICE… it was MARKETING and BUDGET!

I am not using the word dreck, nor do I expect anyone else to agree w/ my assessment of a fragrance, not sure where you get that! Just stating facts. For some years the Fifis had a separate category meant to reward an excellent juice — that obviously means that things other than (or in addition to) an excellent juice are being rewarded by the categories “best prestige” & “best mass market”, etc.

And on the contrary, I do not think a large marketing budget will “overcome” a fragrance that isn’t appealing to large numbers of people, although obviously it will help attract more customers into trying it.

They re-launched in last year in different packaging — it was on several Fifi nomination lists this year.
