Lazy weekend poll ~ three free perfumes

Posted by Robin on 15 January 2011 475 Comments

Joe is hosting this weekend's poll. Here is what he wants to know: let's say you're going to get three fragrances for free. They've got to be regular perfumes that you could easily buy online โ€” nothing ultra-rare or vintage or so exclusive you'd have to travel somewhere to buy it. What would you pick?

In case any of you haven't met Joe, let me introduce you:

Those sound good, Owen. I wouldn’t mind having just a tiny bottle of Angel myself someday. Have you smelled the Naughty Alice?

yes I have smelled Naughty Alice, I really like it
I think it’s aimed at a wider audience than boudoir & sin garden because while them two are kind of quirky and weird, Alice is pretty normal for a VW fragrance.

you can still tell it’s VW scent though, the base is just about the same as the other two.

you know like nearly every perfume created by a brand smell similar to some extent, they have their own kind of trademark scent that they incorporate into their perfumes so you know who created it? I hope this makes sense.

I tried the Jimmy Choo today. it’s basically a sweet fruity cocktail, you can even smell the alcohol. so it would be nice for summer. it’s not what I expected at all, infact I was rather diddapointed with it.

Oh look, Private Collection is fantastic. And to think you can stroll into any shopping mall in the world and buy a fragrance of that quality for not a huge amount of money. Or, if you like, you can snap up a mini online, for peanuts. And reformulation does not seem to be an issue, as far as I’m aware. It comforts me, ya know?

Hmm, and see, scrolling through the comments, I think I should probably swap out the “inexpensive” Like This for a FB of Guerlain SDV, which has been getting a lot more wear from me than I would have expected. I’m not sure my decant will be enough, long-term.

immortelle is iffy on me. In Like This, the immortelle grows and grows and GROWS! until I feel like I’m swimming in maple syrup. Love maple syrup on pancakes….but the smell nauseates me really quickly. 15 minutes of Like This makes me feel like I’m about to hack.

Hey, happy Saturday, everyone! And thanks to Robin for letting me guest host this poll… it should be fun. Imagine a free shopping spree or gift certificate of pretty much unlimited amount? Sounds good to me.

I confess that until yesterday’s mail, one of my bottles would have been Guerlain Attrape Cล“ur, but that’s my latest real purchase, and one I’ve been wanting and thinking about for a LONG time.

So I think my three would probably be:
    – Chanel Nยฐ19 extrait
    – Guerlain L’Heure Bleue extrait
    – Serge Lutens Fleurs de Citronnier

Have a great weekend, and I look forward to seeing everyone’s answers.

      Attrape Coeur
      Attrape Coeur

I already have a bottle and some decants, but man oh man. I think I could wear this one every day for the rest of my life. But I’ll stop being so greedy and think of three others. Afterall, a true perfumista can’t only wear ONE perfume (and I surely don’t…).

    Hi, Joe!

At the moment, I would want:
    Balenciaga Paris
Ambre Passion Elixir by Laura Mercier
    Plum by Mary Greenwell

I could have mentioned SL Tubรฉreuse Criminelle, which I (being in London) can quite easily get, but I don’t want to make everyone else green with envy. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Bela! Those are three very nice scents that will get you through a variety of seasons. I really enjoy Paris a lot, and I think the Mercier is a delicious rich amber.

I myself am content with a small decant of Criminelle, but I am dying for a bell jar of El Attarine or Rahat!

Whhaaaaaaaaa from Australia! Don’t get me started on the unavailability of the sacred Bell Jars outside of Europe!!! Its especially bad because I am sure the export versions are getting refomulated and dumbed-down day by day…I am quite happy with my brand-new a La Nuit, but even In the last 18 months, during which I went through 3 samples, it noticeably changed. And I would have to say that my new bottle of Cedre is quite acrid compared to samples of the same time frame….I felt it used to have a little of Criminey’s amazingness in there somewhere but it has a rougher, cheaper feeling to it than the samples…I was going to finish my summer vanilla splurge with Un Bois Vanille but I’d be really disappointed if it too has gone off…has anyone bought it lately??

I have been testing a few roses lately. Among them:

OJ Ta’if , C&S Dark Rose, Teo Cabanel Oha, TC Early Roses, YOSH Sottile (oil form), and SSS Cameo, Velvet Rose, Rose Musc, and Vintage Rose. The SSS scents are all available for really reasonable prices, or will be when the cart comes back up. Rose Musc is just what the name suggests. Velvet Rose is more nearly a soliflore. There are other notes, but the rose is center stage. Vintage Rose is darker and more complex. Ta’if is a spicy rose, perhaps more spice than rose. Sottile is a tea rose soliflore with incredible lasting power, at least in the oil (I haven’t tried the EdP). It lasts 12 hours or more on me, and I have perfume eating skin. Early Roses is rose + other florals, and I find it somewhat similar to Cameo. My favorite so far is Oha. It is definitely a rose-centered scent, but with enough other notes to keep it from being either too simple or too sour.

I’ve tried a few rose scents recently although I am not a huge fan but a couple that peeked my interest were Le Labo Rose (31-I think) and Frederic Malle Portrait Of A Lady. Both on the spicy side which I think is why I enjoyed them so much.

          • Julia says:
            15 January 2011 at 9:37 pm

I was on a rose kick over the spring but I never sampled Ta’if. I need to rectify that. Does it have oud? I think I lost interest after one too many rose ouds.

          • 50_Roses says:
            15 January 2011 at 9:49 pm

Here are the notes of Ta’if, taken from the OJ sits:

            Top:
            Pink pepper, saffron and dates
            Heart:
Rose oil, freesia, orange flower absolute
            and jasmine
            Base:
            Broom and amber

So–no oud listed. I can’t swear to it otherwise, as I’m not sure I can pick out oud from a mixture of other notes.

Seconding the SSS Cameo, and would add Guerlain’s Nahema (rose, peach and Guerlainade) and L’Artisan’s Safran Troublant (rose and saffron).

If I could truly have ANYTHING, it would be a Xerjoff carved rutillated quartz bottle filled with Irisss. Or maybe the amethyst bottle…. ๐Ÿ™‚

Aside from that, the scents I love whose prices have really held me back from the beautiful FBs are The Party in Manhattan, Parfums MDCI Enlevement au Serail and Amouage (either Jub 25 or Homage Attar).

I also love the luxurious Kilians, but have already managed to satisfy my longings with the less expensive travel sets and discounted partial or boxless bottles. Patient hunting does pay off!

Joe, as they say in Spanish: El que pide a Dios y pide poco, estรก loco. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (Roughly, whoever makes a request of God and only asks for something small is crazy, but it rhymes nicely in Spanish.)

I’ve never seen them in real life, but the photos of the MDCI bottles with the bust tops look very pretty to me, so that’s what I’m asking for. If course, I’d be thrilled with the refill!

Although I haven’t sampled the new one (and despite to YSL’s claims that they did not reformulate), I’d go for the old one. Some say the new Opium has lost some of its spicy goodness.

I have not sampled the new yet either. I bought my Opium a few years ago when I spotted a 30ml bottle going cheap at a discount perfume shop. Back then no-one was talking about Opium much. It had been around for centuries and was all rather taken fro granted. Now that it seems to have been re-formulated, the perfume blogoshpere is humming with indignation and my bottle has become something to treasure!

Good Morning Joe! Thanks for hosting.

    Three? only THREE? **stresssss**

okay, reserving the right to change my mind but not cheating outright….since I know you’d call me on it right away (you’re wise to my 1, 2, 2.25, 2.375, 2.5 etc tricks.)
    1. FM L’Eau d’Hiver—one of those big honkin 250ml bottles…and I’d spray til wet…then just lay there on the floor enjoying my cloud of sillage.
2.Balenciaga Paris—keep watching on ebay for a nice cheap bottle that no one notices…
    3. ooo last choice, need to make it a good one….I’d say Agonist Liquid Crystal…but that’s not really “readily accessible, go to the store and buy it”… or Xerjoff XXY…but that’s not terribly accessible either…but since we’re already dreaming, why not dream big?

But both the Xerjoff and the Agonist are available from Lucky Scent, so they qualify as something you can easily buy online.

I guess I must need to go back and revisit it as it has been mentioned a few times in this post! Not only that but now I have added about 10 new scents on my list to try!! This is fun!

Hi, Daisy! This is a funny exercise for YOU… mmm hmmm. You rarely need to give in to fantasy to get any bottles you want. Well… okay, maybe the Agonist! I didn’t know Malle came in 250ml bottles. Cool.

You know, I want a little bottle of the Balenciaga too; have any 30ml bottles been turning up on evilbay? The actual bottle is really attractive. Ok, now I want one! I think all this poll is doing is creating more cravings. ๐Ÿ˜€

I’d have to check to be sure but I think only the d’Hiver and Bigarade come in the hugemungous 250ml size….all the better for the full body spray down, my dear.

Well, since they’re free, I might as well choose the three most expensive on my wish list. My three choices for “I would love to have these but they are way beyond my budget” perfumes are:

    Amouage Gold Woman
    Xerjoff Ibitira
    Guerlain Vega

It’s a dangerous line to fall in love with, that’s for sure! The chances of finding a Xerjoff at a discount would seem to be approximately zero. I tried the entire sample set of the Shooting Stars line. I noly really fell for one (Ibitira), but even one is one too many for my budget. I don’t even want just a decant, even if one were available, as I really do like the bottles. Sigh!

Oh my, what a poll! I have to say that I’ve been whittling down my wish list significantly. But there are definitely purchases that I just can’t bring myself to make because of the high cost. I may end up hosting splits, but until then:

    Vetiver Pour Elle
    Oriental Brulant
Either Jicky or L’Heure Bleue extrait (which to choose???)

    1. Le Labo Oud 27- a 100 ml bottle (my 15ml is going to run out soon)
    2. Byredo Oud Accord- sensing a theme here?
    3. Ormonde Jayne Woman- for something a little different

Hi Carrie. I think the Byredo is one I sniffed on a test strip when I was shopping a couple weeks ago and it smelled really good. I’ve still not tried so many of the Ormond Jaynes, including Woman!

the biggest bottle of FM Musc Ravageur I could buy
Chanel Coromandel, which already comes in a mega bottle
Serge Lutens Bas de Soie, which I am saving up for atm. I’m hoping that Parfum1 does a 20% off sale for Valentine’s Day and I can buy my preciousss BdS that smells so wonderful on my skin. I’m on a strict no buy – nailpolish, perfume, clothes, thrifting, everything – until it’s mine!

Le Labo Vanille is probably one of my ABSOLUTE favorites!!!! My decant is running too low- I would have put that on my list too but added Musc 25 since I’m in U.S. That scent just makes me smile all day long!

Really? I’ve never actually smelled it. I just figured if 3 bottles could magically show up on my doorstep, I’d want Vanille to be one of them. ๐Ÿ™‚
Do you tend to like vanilla scents? How would you describe it in terms of sweetness / spiciness / smokiness, etc.?

Hmmm- this is tough. It’s not super sweet at all- I would say it is more on the spicy side. The Vanilla is in there but not very prominent after a while. For me, it gets slightly powdery- there is musk in the dry down. It sits so nicely on my skin- very warm. My other Vanilla scent I was in love with was Creed’s Sublime Vanilla until I smelled this one of course. I almost want to say there could be some slight similarities between the 2 but then again someone with a more “trained” nose may totally disagree-LOL. It is definitely worth buying a small decant to see if it is something you enjoy. I would SOO love to have enough of it that I could spray it all over me!!!

This is really fun. Nervewracking, and the limitations are killing me – does it count if I have to call up some fancy-schmancy store and give them my credit card number and promise them my first grandchild? And I HATE it that I can’t just order up some MG Plum, because I already woulda done that.

Also, I’ve recently gotten my hands on some things I’d been dying to have for a long time: I got a partial bottle of La Myrrhe, and just made arrangements to trade an unloved bottle for some Champagne de Bois. So those two are crossed off the “I want it, I need it, I must have it” list.

And that leaves – Oh, House of Fraser, are you absolutely sure I can’t convince you to send me a bottle of Plum on a slow boat? No? I’ll have to twist my friend’s arm then –

Guerlain Vega – gorgeous bottle, gorgeous fragrance
Maison Francis Kurkdjian Lumiere Noire pour Femme – no idea what the bottle looks like, and I don’t care, it’s the sexiest thing I own a decant of
F Malle Carnal Flower – which I would bathe in if I had more than a decant. Oddly, it is not particularly radiant on me; it just settles down and shimmers.

Gotta say, Tania’s description of it in Perfumes: The Guide really, really, REALLY makes me want to try this. (I believe I have a sample on the way from ReiRien.) As much as I love the Coleridge poem, I much prefer Tania’s idea of Kubla Khan!

[Ahem, full disclosure: my complete picture involves the tv show Xena. Lol! Stay with me. I actually hated the show but one night I caught an episode with the NZ actor, Marton Csokas as this character “Borias” whom I think was based on Attila the Hun and the Khans. If you can bear the cheesiness, here’s a YouTube fan video. It’s actually much more bearable in this condensed form with a lovely Sting song than it is to watch the episodes entire! ]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k7_xpzEAB8

I remember this was on when I lived in Seattle and couldn’t afford cable, so inevitably I’d watch an episode here and there. But being an ancient history and mythology student and fan, this show used to give me *headaches* of frustration. lol But I will always be thankful for their use of hunky Auzzie/Kiwi actors. ๐Ÿ˜›

    Cuir de Russie parfum
    Iris Silver Mist
Une Rose or Portrait of a Lady (I haven’t smelled POAL yet, so I can’t decide)

I thought about Tihota since it’s free. I get the smokiest, burning rubber smell from it that I can’t seem to find anywhere in B. Black – it almost reaches Lonestar Memories levels and it tempers the sweet vanilla very nicely. However, I find Indult’s original “exclusive club” concept tacky and the price insulting.

Hi, Everybody! Things are going along. I only have two more chemo treatments left, thank goodness, but I will probably continue one of the drugs on a maintenance schedule for a couple of years or so. My oncologist is pleased with my progress and my prognosis is very good. I’m ready for things to get back to ‘normal’ and I’m looking forward to having hair again. Maybe I will celebrate by going to Paris and buying a bottle of Iris Silver Mist since I’m hoarding my last drop like liquid diamonds. I can name more than three ‘non-exports’ I would like the perfume fairy to leave under my pillow. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi Julia and welcome back. I think of u often and am glad u have returned with a good prognosis…my best friend is in final stages of cancer after 4 years of battling. She was told in the beginning it was not curable, only manageable..it is so good to hear u r doing well.
Besides Shalimar..i have this need to lay my hands on ISM…haven’t even tried it yet…but my gut knows i will need a bell jar of that!

Aw, you guys are so sweet! And if I inspired somebody to try my beloved Shalimar I’m thrilled! I’m embarrassed to say how many bottles I own. I scored a 1968 blue enamel bottle of EdT that’s been kept sealed in a closet all these years. Simply removing the cap was a revelation.

I just looked this up on Luckyscent and it is SOLD OUT! So you’d have to sell your soul to one of the 999 who bought this LE and are entitled to buy more – wish I’d thought of that!

Are they still selling the original 999 bottles? I thought Tihota came out a few years ago and assumed that they decided to make more bottles available. I really like it, but the price and the “exclusive club” thing turn me off.

Gosh, alot of people seem to be picking things which I would consider exclusive. As far as I tell Lutens Iris Silver Mist was never available in the U.S. (If you know, other wise let me know). Not, that I would object to a free Killian.

Hi Dilana. I think something like ISM is stretching the concept of “easily available,” but when I first thought of the poll idea, I just didn’t want people trying to stock up on 800ml bottles of Guerlain Djedi from 1930, which hasn’t been available for decades. We perfumistas manage to get our hands rather easily on things that are semi-exclusive — of course they always come at a price! As Noz said above, if we’re going to dream, we might as well dream big.

I do like Black Orchid though. Nice choice.

        Hello again,

I had the chance to try it in London in August at Les Senteurs. To me, it’s a very soft and mysterious oud scent. The start reminded me a lot of the Borneo topnotes, but then it took a totally different direction. It’s so well blended that I couldn’t detect single notes. And it confused me in a way, so I couldn’t make up my mind to buy. Which I regret now, because I keep thinking about it. But I heard from a friend, that it should be more widly avaible from March on.
        Cheers

Oooh, good question. Makes me feel like a kid around Christmas time. I’d choose:

Musc Ravageur oil – I find this absolutely heavenly in the oil, and it’s so good for layering.

Vero Profumo Kiki EDP – I had no real expectations for this one, the notes didn’t sound like something I’d be that into, but every time I spray the tiny sample I have on my wrist I spend the rest of the day huffing it like an addict. This stuff is beautiful; I must try the others ASAP (I’ve never tried the extrait; I can’t afford to, unfortunately).

SIP Fire and Cream – This one has been a long-time favourite of mine. I like to spray it in my hair and catch unexpected whiffs of it throughout the day.

It’s really hard to choose just three! The first one on this list would be on my list any and every day, the second one is a current obsession, but the last one could have been one of any number of perfumes, and only ended up being Fire and cream because of my current mood, I think. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Joe

Ya know? I’m pretty happy with the things I have already, especially as I treated myself to some lovely things at Christmas. I have some of my heart’s desires, including Chanel No 5 extrait vintage and modern, and Chanel No 19, Chamade, Coco and L’Heure Bleue in various vintage and modern concentrations.

So I will name just one: Apres l’Ondee. It sounds like my most perfect fragrance, and for that reason, even tho’ I could order a sample from TPC in the next five minutes, what if I discover it is NOT my heart’s desire, my perfume soul mate? Where would that leave me? That would remove a cherished desire. Sounds stupid, I know.

I have to confess that I was pretty good to myself over the holidays, as were my dog, cat, husband, and son.

I understand about keeping one special thing a mystery. I dreamed of Homage Attar for two years before trying a sample and it turns out it isn’t made of unicorn kisses like I expected. I feel so jaded now.

That’s it exactly – preserving a sense of mystery. Harder to do these days when it feels as if just about anything can be bought on the internet. I’m a fan of the novels of Ngaio Marsh, the New Zealand crime writer of the golden age. Probably I could buy any and all of her novels online, but I have a rule not to. I just pick them up at markets or second hand bookshops whenever I see them, in the old fashioned way.

        Homage Attar does sound amazing.

That’s really an interesting concept to me, Annemarie — having an ideal of the Holy Grail perfume in your head, but not sniffing it for fear of ruining the fantasy. I admire your willpower!

I understand the feeling behind this though … how many times have we been salivating after reading about a perfume for weeks or even years, only to end up singing “Is That All There Is?” in the end?!

    *Tauer Une Rose Chypree
*Chanel No. 5 extrait (I’d prefer vintage, but if it’s free, I’ll take what I can get)
*Cartier Xieme Heure (the horsey, smoky, gin-y ones have gotten all the love, but I’m really digging my sample of this tart berry scent — I’ll be darned if I’ll shell out $250 for it, however)

I’m sure later on I’ll regret really not thinking this through before I posted. (As if anything is really going to magically appear on my doorstep.) Right now I’d have to go with BK Cruel Intentions, Amouage Ubar, and Chanel Sycomore (in the big-ass bottle, please!). HOWEVER… in the spirit of trying to be a better person, I might swap out the Ubar for a bottle of TF Tobacco Vanille for my B.

Hi Joe, great topic — thanks for hosting it!
    Ah … decisions, decisions.
    Guess I would go for:

Puredistance (Internet available but oh-so pricey!)
    Clive Christian “C” for women
Le Labo Gaiac 10 (oh wait, since it’s not readily available, guess I can’t include it)
so No. 3 will be the lovely and shimmering Carnal Flower

My first instinct is to ask for three back-up bottles of Party In Manhattan (worth every penny, BTW) but I think I’ll take the opportunity to ask for things I don’t like quite enough to spring for a FB, but am lusting after the bottle….

    Feerie, VC&A

    Stephen Jones/CdG Violets

Any of the Vera Wang heart shaped bottles/Juicy Couture bottles with all the charms/or the Happ & Stahn’s

I just picked up a mini of Envy online, and like it very much. Does anyone know if it is or has been discontinued? It is not on the Gucci website any more, and a couple of department stores near me don’t stock it. I did see it at a pharmacy. (I’m in Australia.) I’m still undecided if it is FB-worthy, but maybe II should stock up anyway, just in case. Lovely bottle.

Well, if we are let to add French Perfume Faeries in to the equation, I’d like to add a bell jar of Serge Lutens Sarrasins in the uber fancy bottle, not that I have ever even sniffed it but how can one possibly go wrong with gorgeous purple juice in a fancy bottle??

If I couldn’t have that, I would get Divine Eau de Parfum ( I recently fell madly in love with a sample!), a big bottle of Hermes Rose Ikebana (I only have the travel size now) and a replacement of my beloved Annick Goutal Neroli, which is running dangerously low.

Late to the party, but I have a good excuse – been at the opera in NYC and just returned home (well, and dinner and time with the family, etc). So off the top of my head:
    1. Sa Majeste La Rose – Which seems to have fallen off everyone’s radar of late
    2. Lyric – Just because well, it’s Lyric! (Dang, should have worn this today! But I wore Attrape Coeur, which would have made the list if it was still available)
    3. Angelique Noir – Because every wish list needs a Guerlain, and because I’ve become quite taken with it

    Thanks for hosting, Joe!

It’s the new Willie Decker (modern) staging of La Traviata at the MET that was initially presented 5 yrs ago in Vienna. Really eye-opening interpretation and some glorious singing. I didn’t agree with everything he did, but was quite thrilled with seeing it overall.
The creamy, dark quality of Lyric would have matched Marina Poplovskaya’s voice perfectly.

I meant Salzburg, not Vienna, and yes – the DVD from the original premier does feature Anna and Rolando. I believe both were originally tapped for the MET, but Rolando backed out a while ago and Anna followed more recently. The “official” reason was that she didn’t want to compete with the DVD, whatever that means. Frankly, this was a great cast – not perfect, but great. I’d be glad to chat opera with you anytime, Rapple!

It would take me six weeks to choose the three among everything I want. So I’m going to change the rules to say that I have fifteen seconds to rattle off the names. In that case:

    Bois 1920 Sutra Ylang
    Heeley Cardinal
    Serge Lutens Chene

OK, my fifteen seconds are up. It’s too late to say, No! Chanel Cuir de Russie! No! Cepes & Tuberose! No! Tubereuse Criminelle! No! _Tihota_!

    Sutra Ylang, Cardinal, Chene.

Julie, Evening in Paris is readily available in many shapes and sizes on ebay – undoubtedly the exact type of bottle that your mother had is there, and it is not expensive since it was so very popular. Nonetheless, someone else posted here that she preferred NOT to sniff her Holy Grail scent – often mystery is more beautiful than reality.

Haunani, I sampled Homage Attar and then bought a small decant from TPC (just 1.5 mls I think). It is very Arabic and very potent to my nose. I love it and want to have it on hand always, but just a tiny dab or two from the dinky vial dabber is best, to my nose, so I think the decant will suffice. I must confess, though, that I also have BK Rose Oud, a more classical French perfume version of the theme, for abandoned spritzing. ๐Ÿ™‚

By the way, I’m testing Stephanie de Saint Aignan Royal Palm this morning, which you’ve recommended before. I also enjoyed sampling her Embruns d’Ambre. SdSA is really a unique talent, I think – glad you brought her to my attention!

Reading backwards from my post and just realized we are apparently scent twins. I thought about adding SL’s Rahat Loukum as my 3rd bottle. Been hungering to try it since realizing that it’s probably somewhat similar to Traversee du Bosphore, which kicks up a wicked craving for Turkish Delight. I believe Daisy is responsible for my introduction to TdB! I bought the candle recently so my whole house can smell like it. L’Artisan mini-candles are $20, which of course equates to free! ๐Ÿ™‚

That was oddly hard to do……..i had to rack my brains really hard, and I realised it’s because there are very few perfumes I actually WANT to have full bottles of these days! I’ve become very picky, and end up sampling lots but rarely finding ones that I want to wear regularly. I’ve got a very restrained scent wardrobe these days! Very pared down to the most essentials!

I hear you, Blimunda. I have TONS of decants, and I’m kind of happy with small quantities. However, there are still things that I’d love to get my hands on a bottle of… if for nothing else the fact that I know it would keep me supplied for 5-10 years.

Oh, Joe, can’t these people read? “Theyโ€™ve got to be regular perfumes that you could easily buy online โ€” nothing ultra…”. Then they list SL Chene, CdG Carnation, Norma Kamali Jazmin, Naughty Alice, Bois des Iles, Champagne de Bois, and Lโ€™Heure Bleu in parfum. L’Heure Bleu as easily available? There are only two stores in America that carry it. And there is noting “regular” about L’Heure Bleu let me tell you. When I think “regular” and “easily available” I think Beautiful , Charlie, Chanel No.5, These people need to get back in touch with “regular” once they finish their comprehension classes.

Hi! L’Heure Bleue extrait is readily available for quite good prices (if you don’t want vintage!) on eBay! Several of the large discount sellers have the 1 oz. tester bottles (those cute little cubes) for sale.

I read it as available on sites like luckyscent and theperfumedcourt. How accessible things are, via shops, depends a lot on where you live. And, yeah, I guess if all it takes is reading your credit card it hardly seems inaccessible!

I think that a perfumista definition of “regular” and a regular definition of “regular” are two different things. Everything that you listed as being not “regular” or “easily available” is actually both – it did say that you could buy online and, as other have pointed out, you can. L’Heure Bleue in extrait maybe be uncommonly beautiful, but it isn’t an LE or vintage or particularly rare in perfume circles, so it definitely fits the criteria.

I’d probably take a bottle of No. 5 for free, although I already have one, so I didn’t pick it – but I’d pass on both Charlie and Beautiful. Anything under $100 and available in any department or drug store is too easily attainable, so if I’m going to wish for things to fall out of the sky, I’m aiming a little higher.

I’m sorry to say I didn’t appreciate your snarkiness about this.
Maybe you didn’t mean too, you being exasperated and all but your comment sounded rude. Don’t make a mockery of people’s choices just because supposedly they did not follow the rules.

Now that IS a good question. Trying “every perfume known to humanity” is quite a daunting task. I try to apply logic and rationality in making this decision – but that is not going very well.

I start with my attraction to any note that strikes my fancy at the time. Then I try to explore that note. Out of that fall one, or more, perfumes and somewhere through that process I get distracted to discover “what else they make”. What I have noticed is that “houses” tend to have a kind of character. Sample sets are great for that – hence Amouage and OJ.

My mistake, at the begining, was falling for Guerlain and Chanel. *Sigh*. Those are places I never want to leave (also very expensive places!). I don’t think I’ll get through those in a hurry. But then…..who wants to hurry this process!

I must say that I believe Antaeus has been reformulated (that or my sense of smell has changed over the years more than I care to admit)

We had a bottle at home in ’89 (my dad brought it from france, we were thrilled) and I shared it with my brother.

True. Iris Silver Mist is easily available, if you consider $12/ml easy, but full bell jars are harder to come by.
What I really wish for is a perfume fairy with a time machine to bring me a bottle of Emmeraude parfum circa 1921 so I can smell for myself the debt of gratitude Jacques Guerlain owes for Shalimar.

Oooh! I had no idea! And this begs the question, don’t they have the original recipes sitting around in the vault somewhere? Coty is still making something called Emmeraude – even if many of the original materials are unavailable or restricted surely they could come up with something closer to the real thing.

Yes, they could surely get closer – LT’s review of Emeraude in The Guide notes that Coty even replicated it once for a corporate event! It is sad that Coty is so careless of their heritage, in contrast to Patou which issued that amazing collection of tiny bottles of their classics.

Eek! Late to the party, I wish I had the money to buy more samples-everyone’s picks are so more advanced than mine, but, with the knowledge that I have:
        Amouage Reflection Women
Guerlain Cruel Gardenia ( I can here the boos now)
        Frederick Malles En Passant
        I’m a floral girl….shrug.
I was gonna say a big bottle of Pure Poison, but then I’d just be laughed at. But, guess what? My oxymoron PP with it’s mandarin opening, soft jasmine, gardenia heart, and jasmine amber musk dry-down got 28 positive reviews on Basenotes and only 5 thumbs down. PP isn’t complicated, but I always get a ton of compliments and I almost swoon when I wear it.
I know this rambling won’t make anyone here like it, but I feel almost ashamed that I love it so. One big reason is I actually got a comment here that people were so glad and relieved I liked Black Orchid…now what could that mean?
It would be fun to have more polls Joe-One on 3 guilty pleasures and one on 3 mainstream perfumes. People would really have to brain strain!
Thanks for listening and the poll.

Hi Ann! Those all sound good, but for some reason I thought you had backups for your backups of Coco!

Late to the party here, but I was thinking my choices would break down into two categories: the freebies I’d get because it’s hard for me to imagine paying full price (Lyric and the patchouli scent from Pro Fumum,) and the freebies I’d get because they’re drugstore scents and therefore common to the point of boring, but still great (Angel.)
