I'm terribly late this month, but here it is: the August perfume coverage in Allure, and as always, please comment on any fragrance coverage you've seen in other fashion & beauty magazines lately.
Cover: Amy Adams.
Scent strips: Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue.
Editorial coverage: The Beauty Reporter section includes the Benefit Crescent Row trio among the Editor's Favorites (p. 50) and has a quick paragraph on rose perfumes ("Rose Flush", p. 56). The regular "Smell This" feature in which random passersby comment on a new fragrance takes on Issey Miyake's A Scent by Issey Miyake (p. 58).
That's it!
For a beauty magazine, Allure sure has done a good job lately of making its cover celebs look god-awful!
So true!
Since you’re one of my favorite people, robin, illl help you out here
:elle: (Cover-Jennifer Anniston) Scents- Givenchy Play, Couture Couture (No strip, just a big beautiful ad!), Jessica Simpson Fancy Love, D&G Fragrance anthology with scent strips of L’imperatrice and La Lune, Michael Kors Very Hollywood (No strip. Just the ad)
:Cosmo: (Cover- Kristen Bell) Scents-Marc Jacobs Lola, Estee Lauder Sensous, Tim Mcgraw Southern Blend, Ralph Lauren Polo Blue
:Harper’s Bazaar: (Cover- Leighton Meester) Scents-Juicy Couture Couture Couture (No strip, just the beautiful 3 page ad again :), Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Luxe Edition, Michael Kors Very Hollywood (This time, WITH a scent strip 🙂
Thanks so much! I will have to find that Juicy Couture 3 page ad, sounds worth seeing.
Oh, they’re very juvenile. I can’t see you making quite a fuss over them like I did 🙂
LOL…but I like fun ads!
In the September issue of Elle, the founders of Juicy Couture suggest layering TBS Patchouli with Carnal Flower!!!
September Elle also has an article on Marc Jacobs that features some editorial content on Lola, plus there’s a scent strip of Lola in the issue. Just got the Sept. copy of Harper’s Bazaar, too, and those two magazines alone could hardly be jammed into my full size mailbox. I think Bazaar featured something about Armani Idole and possibly more, but I don’t have the strength to pick these up and dig through them, esp as the table of contents is about 100 pages from the cover….
Still, glad to hear at least a few magazines are still healthy. Allure does not seem to be doing all that well.
Interesting, thanks!
I’m a little younger than their target demographic, but the July / Aug. issue of “More” has an article on finding a fragrance after 40. It includes the depressing thought that our sense of smell starts to diminish after 35 (supposedly a reason why older perfume buyers like different scents than the fruity, foody florals aimed at younger women).
Don’t buy that reasoning: that age cohort didn’t like them when they were young, either.
Good point, Robin. Now that I think about it some more, older “More” readers (say, 55 and up) were probably the ones who were buying Opium in droves when it came out in the late ’70s and they were in their twenties. So that does blow a hole in the theory of the M.D. that “More” quotes. Being young does not always lead to a love of sweet, foody scents.
Although another, possibly conflicting point, is that way back then, brands weren’t catering to tweens at all. So who knows what we’d have now if they had been!
I’ve had just the opposite problem. Menopause seems to be doing some weird hormonal thing to me like morning sickness in reverse. All of a sudden I can’t stand really strong scents, including things I’ve always worn and almost can’t stand to be in the same room with someone wearing one. I was going to write in on this to let the folks here help me come up with something to wear now that doesn’t bother me.
I hear it goes away again. In the meantime, maybe stick with light citrusy colognes??
Glamour (Sep 09):
Ads: Burberry The Beat edt, Coco Mademoiselle, Dillards Ad has Valentino Rock’n Rose and True Religion, Viva La Juicy, Walmart ad for Mariah Carey Ultra Pink, Elizabeth Arden Pretty
Strips: Ralph Lauren Romance Always Yours, Givenchy Play, J’Adore L’eau, Marc Jacobs Lola, Queen Latifah Queen, Paris Hilton Siren
In Dos & Dont’s of Looking Hot, D&G founders talk about not getting stuck in a rut and letting one scent define you. They also put in a plug for the new scent series. Faith Hill talks about her new scent and says that she wears Jo Malone Red Roses body lotion to bed. Glamour names Britney Spears Curious and Clinque Happy “best buys” – as voted on by readers. Under Fall Dos and Don’ts – says that fragrance is the ultimate accessory, warns against overspraying, and talks about Michael Kors’ new Very Hollywood.
Wow, that’s a lot of scent strips, and more fragrance coverage in general. Curious to see what the September Allure has. Might be time for me to switch magazines.
My subscription to Glamour is free – I used my points from drinking way too much Diet Coke. I used to get Cosmo and Harper Bazaar – I was thinking about getting Allure, too, but maybe I’ll get Lucky again instead.
I was surprised by the number of scent strips when I went and looked, I don’t know if this was a normal month or not.
Hey, I drink too much DC too, but I didn’t get any magazines for it! Allure seems to me to have downscaled this year, but that’s true of lots of magazines. Don’t know if they’re doing better or worse than anyone else. Will be interesting to see if the Sept issue (which I should get any day now, I’m so late reporting on August) is fatter, as it should be.
You need to register at mycokerewards and enter those codes on the caps of 2 litres and on the boxes of the 12 & 24 packs. When the program first started, they had really good things that you could save points for (like gift cards for Sephora), now it’s mostly stuff like magazine subscriptions and stuff. Still, I’ve gotten several free mags, not to mention a couple of gift certificates, a messenger bag, a gym bag, and some other stuff.
Aha, thanks!
Wow, it seems makeup is trending back to the 80’s! Much more color than I’m used to seeing on a model/celebrity.
Sorry to say I pay zero attention to makeup trends, I didn’t even notice!
