Jo Malone Vanilla & Anise ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 11 June 2009 49 Comments

Jo Malone Vanilla & Anise cologneJo Malone will launch Vanilla & Anise, a new fragrance "designed to evoke the moment that vanilla orchids bloom at day-break in Madagascar". Madagascar is currently the world's largest producer of vanilla, although the vanilla orchid itself is native to Mexico.

The fragrance notes for the citrus floral scent include bergamot, neroli, wild fennel flower, star anise, oleander, tuberose, frangipani, purple vanilla orchid, clove, white amber, vetiver, vanilla bourbon absolute and tonka bean.

Jo Malone Vanilla & Anise will be available in 30 ($55) and 100 ($100) ml. (via cosmeticsinternational, cosmeticworld.com, vanityfair)

Sounds good. But as I know there is no Jo Malone available in germany. Citrus floral is mine especially the bergamot note. Got my sample of CSP vanille abricot yesterday and its way too sweet and heavy for me. My mother called it a pipe-tobacco-scent. Maybe another try on a cold winters day.

By coincidence I just tried that CSP for the first time in a few years…still too sweet for me too.

Interesting combination. I don’t have any experience with vanilla orchids, but I’ve noticed that the three different kins of vanilla beans at Penzey’s (loooove Penzey’s, they have the best-quality spices) have very different notes. One of them (could be Madagascar, I don’t know) has an almost medicinal edge in addition to the familiar vanilla; I wonder if that’s what she’s getting at.

Don’t know…but Caron did a very similar combination in Eau de Reglisse.

It’s very soft & wearable. I think there’s a review at Perfume Smellin’ Things. I liked it but didn’t love it.

Does anyone else recall that when Jo Malone fragrances first launched in the States in about ’99 (before Estee Launder purchased the company outright), that a 3.4 ounce cologne was $70.00? Seriously. A thirty dollar increase in the time since? And for scents that typically don’t last on skin? Thank you, but no.

Thank you for saying this. I am actually really annoyed with the line. It’s COLOGNE. Not even EdT, but cologne! I bought a small bottle of Vintage Gardenia, and ended up giving it away because it didn’t last more than a minute. (Ok, I gave it as a gift, and pretended I hadn’t used it–I”m bad.) I’m only exaggerating a little: the time between spraying it on my wrist, and lifting my wrist to my nose to smell it? It was gone. SO not worth the price! I’m really amazed they have the following they do.

In terms of the actual concentration, not sure that’s accurate…pretty sure I’ve read that they use the same concentration as your standard EdT (and bear in mind there are no legal definitions of these terms anyway, and so one company’s EdT might have less of a concentration than another company’s Cologne).

It’s true, many of them don’t. That’s my main complaint about Black Vetyver Cafe, which I love otherwise.

they quite literally (no exaggeration in the least here) last on me ALL DAY! I go to work in the morning wearing it and by the time i go to bed i can still smell the Silage on my skin! I have never had any issues with the lasting power of the Line, even something as light and breezy as the Grapefruit and the Lime Basil Mandarin stick to me all day!

is it really much different on skin? i didnt try it on my skin, but it was still nearly as strong on the test strip after 3 days.

Maybe I’m the problem, but it didn’t last at all on me. I just don’t see where they get off charging that much for cologne. Really.

        Ok, I’ll stop now.

Sayitisntso, I haven’t sat down with a calculator, but I think that price increase isn’t any better or worse than what’s happened in general with niche fragrance.

Mmm, can’t wait to give this a try. Am slowly but surely falling in love with JM fragrances. Wonder if this will be LE. I hate feeling rushed to purchase something before it’s gone…

I don’t think so…they don’t usually do LE other than the Kohdo, and I have a feeling those were LE because they were unusual for JM.

I’m definitely intrigued by this – the notes sound soooo appealing. I gave my mom one of the JM samplers a few years ago and it’s kinda fun to play around with. i don’t think they offer one of those any more? Anyway – didn’t LOVE any of the scents in the collection, but this one sounds like a real possibility.

I think it’s interesting that Jo Malone herself was quoted in the past as saying that she actually doesn’t like vanilla as a fragrnace note – something about it being flat and having no depth. I suppose Lauder was only happy to overlook that tidbit since Ms. Malone stepped down from her own company, eh? Wow, I’m in foul mood today. Must be all the rain in NYC…

Tired of rain here too, and am sick to boot. But would also say that I think the Kohdo Woods set is the best we’ve ever seen from JM, and since that was also from after her departure, I’ve got no complaints with EL!

Oh, yes, congrats on the NYT quote! I’m going to try the Vanilla and Anise Jo Malone when it comes out but I don’t have high hopes of liking it. It sounds like wearing a biscotti, but maybe I’m just being snarky because I’m in the middle of icky weather in San Francisco. Glad I’m not the only one made cranky by crummy summer weather!

The Orange Blossom strangely is the only one i cannot wear by itself, have to layer it with something else… it’s very very nice, just smells way too feminine on me and i don’t mind feminine smelling fragrances on me at all, just smells… Girly… not an indictment of the scent, just not my cup of tea when i wear a fragrance.
