Estee Lauder Private Collection Amber Ylang Ylang ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 26 September 2008 37 Comments

Private Collection Amber Ylang Ylang fragrance

Estee Lauder has launched the second in its series of Private Collection fragrances designed by Creative Director Aerin Lauder: Amber Ylang Ylang. Like last year's Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia, it will be in tighter distribution than the "regular" Estee Lauder fragrances.

Warm and inviting. Luminous and intimate. The richness of amber and ylang ylang combine with the luxurious depth of sandalwood and vanilla.

Estee Lauder Private Collection Amber Ylang Ylang is available now at Nordstrom (and many Neiman Marcus stores have testers). Nordstrom is showing the picture above next to the two sizes of Eau de Parfum (30 and 75 ml), but I assume that is a mistake and the jewel-encrusted cap will only come with the Parfum concentration (30 ml), which has not yet been released. I will update with more details when I can find them.

Update: Estee Lauder Amber Ylang Ylang is an amber oriental; the notes include ylang ylang, bergamot, geranium, Bulgarian rose, cinnamon, incense, vanilla, sandalwood and amber. As I suspected, the Eau de Parfum comes with a hammered-gold cap (no jewels), in 30 ($65) or 75 ($120) ml; the Parfum comes in 30 ml (jeweled-cap, $300). (via esteelauder)

Another update: see a review of Private Collection Amber Ylang Ylang.

This sounds rather lovely – I'm impressed by Tuberose Gardenia; it's one of the few tuberose fragrances I've tried that doesn't give me a raging headache! So, I have high hopes that this one will be equally well done and they will get the balance right between depth and sweetness and it won't be too sugary/cloying.

Any news on where and when this will be launching in the UK?

Finally! Tuberose & Gardenia was massively headache-inducing although I loved the lingering smell on my clothes 3 days after!

Eloise, it hasn't “officially” launched at all, even in the US, so no idea when you'll see it. Amber & ylang are not my favorite notes so didn't love it, but it's nicely done and I think it will have lots of fans.

Hope you can score a sample — I got one at NM last week.

Ooohh maybe by the time they're done with the collection there'll be lots of pretty colours for the juice! Pink next, maybe?

I got a sample last week, it's very nice, warm and rich. Even better, it wasn't overly sweet.

I love ylang-ylang and amber. Sandalwood and vanilla are good, too.

Looks like I need to try this one! I did not like TG at first, but it grew on me, and I ended up buying a bottle.

    Hugs!

    Hey there, Robin,
If you've sniffed both Teo Cabanel Alahine and this new EL Amber & Ylang Ylang can you tell me if there's any similarity between the two?
I love Alahine ~ and amber & ylang ylang are the most prominent notes but it's overall an oriental.
    I'm very curious…. thanks in advance :-D !

R, it would be lovely to have a set of the jewel bottles, wouldn't it?

I'm so sorry but the only TC I've smelled is Julia. You've reminded me that I need to get samples of the others — I had some, but gave them away to someone who was dying for them.

Hope someone else will chime in!

I love the sound of this, being a fan of both Tuberose Gardenia (on me the tuberose is orderly and sedate!) and EL Intuition, which is an amber-based fragrance. I am hoping this new one will take the best of both to a new level! I am bit of a sucker for ylang ylang too…

I like Ylang-Ylang, but I am not big on amber. Ambery scents give me a headache and no exceptions so far! I'd still check this one out if I could, just for the hell of it.

The “Jewel encrusted cap” looks like a manufacturer's nightmare to me…

Either the “Jewels” are ALL FAKE and not even sand-picked natural stones or I don´t know… getting the right sized jewels is impossible as there are not two “stones” or “jewels” alike in nature.

It is bizarre and mindboggling! (I am sorry, it is friday and I am overworked, I guess my control-freak-ism kicked in!)

    Regards! :)

    P.

p.s.: I will take a shot at smelling this in the next weeks…. I am going to houston to visit a friend for 10 days or so., and perhaps it is available on the nordstrom there. :-)

Oh, the perfumed joys of travelling to the “first world” ;-)

    I loved Tuberose Gardenia.

On the other hand, I really despise ylang ylang (to me, it smells like cold cream). So, I'm not really sure about this one. I'll smell it, but I aint holding my breath.

But almost none of the stones you see in jewelry are in their natural state…they're cut & polished, generally. So I don't think sizing them would be a problem. That said, I don't think these are expensive stones, necessarily!

And have a great trip to Houston, hope you get to smell lots of good stuff!

I love it, I've been wearing it for almost 2 weeks now. I had a lab sample and blew right through it and am now making my way through the minis. I'm not a big fan of amber, but this is very nicely done. Regarding the ylang ylang – I don't get any kind of cold cream vibe from it. I still haven't seen the cap in person, so I don't know if the cap on the EDP is the same. I think it's a fairly simple, warm amber floral.

Ooo, this sounds sweetly powerful. I used to keep a dish of ylang-ylang oil in the bedroom of my first apartment. Lovely scent but very “orchid-y” and heady. To me, ylang-ylang always smells like orchids, almonds and anise. It married well with the solid, crystalized amber I'd rub on my skin; a bit heavier when both were applied together in oil form. I haven't been as interested, lately, in “orientals” like I once was.

I think “fairly simple, warm amber floral” is a perfect description.

I guess I like some heady flowers but not others…ylang doesn't have enough of an “edge” for me, if that makes any sense.

I am quite interested in trying this perfume as I like both amber and ylang-ylang and in general I am a fan of Estee Lauder.
I should check if the stores down here in Dublin has it so I can try it!

    Hi Robin,
Got another smell-alike comment for you: Amber Ylang Ylang = Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille. Looking at the notes, the two fragrances have a number in common. Does anyone else get the similarity?

I can see the comparison, although can also see why you'd love one and not the other :-)

I just picked up a bottle of this. It is VERY pretty, and I'll use it more as a vanilla comfort scent than as a sexy amber. The opening is just about the prettiest opening I've smelled in a long time. I hardly detect any amber or labdanum in the edp – not like I'm used to: Coco, Prada, SSS Rose Musc, etc. But it is very very pretty, and I have been looking for a vanilla-y frag that isn't too sweet or gourmand. If you don't want sweet or gourmand, this one is it. The ylang ylang is very controlled here so it doesn't have that too nutty smell. The yy is not nearly as strong as in Caron's Nuit de Noel. Actually, Amber YY smells like a very pretty floraly version of a very dried down NdN….it hardly has any sillage. I think this will sell well as noted above, but it registers more a as a flannel PJs sexy than a silk nightie sexy…This is not meant to be an insult, but Amber YY will definitely be training wheels for young woman interested in getting into more expensive frags. It is better than most of the recent releases I've smelled this fall.

I think Angela will review it next week — it isn't my cup of tea, but not likely that anything called Amber Ylang Ylang would be.

Honestly I can't really say why I like this one so much – normally lighter vanilla scents don't really do it for me, and this doesn't even really hit my amber radar. There is just something about the opening that I'm really responding to. I can say however, that this morning when I woke up I could still smell the light labdanum on my skin. I was impressed with that. I'll be interested to read the review. I'm also glad EL has the small size bottle – very considerate of us collectors.
