L'Artisan Parfumeur Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 19 July 2008 53 Comments

Aedes Eau de Parfum by L'Artisan ParfumeurComing this October from L'Artisan, Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum:

Close your eyes, and imagine yourself entering a mysteriously beautiful world where the magic of scent stirs the imagination and evokes wondrous dreams. The doors to the temple open, and the intoxicating scent of ancient Japanese incense rushes to envelop you, intertwined with the softness of leather. The sensuality of musk, the honeyed bitterness of strawflowers, and the voluptuous sweetness of precious woods draw you further into the depths of the temple.

Aedes de Venustas, created for the West Village perfume boutique of the same name, was developed by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour and is the Eau de Parfum version of the Aedes de Venustas home fragrance:

The spicy and vivacious fragrance... retains the woody, Oriental allure of the candle and the room scent, yet includes new facets of spice for sparkle, chypre effect for sophistication, balsam for comfort and leather to compliment and enhance the original fragrance.

The fragrance notes include orange oil, pink pepper, cardamom, incense essential oil, black pepper, rose, iris, cedarwood, incense resinoid, patchouli, coffee, opoponax, benzoin, treemoss, everlasting flower, white musk and vanilla.

L'Artisan Parfumeur Aedes de Venustas will be available in 100 ml Eau de Parfum ($185) in a burgundy version of the L'Artisan faceted glass bottle. It will be exclusive to Aedes. (via press release from Aedes) Update: see a review of L'Artisan Parfumeur Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum.

L, best of luck to you, LOL…but if you liked the room spray, you're going to have a very hard time ignoring this one.

*faints then comes to only to faint again* Aaah! This is terrific news! I loved the room spray, thanks to a special someone *wink wink* And BD being behind this EDP sends the proverbial sugar down my spine :)

Bytheways, I've tried the Essenza di Tempo and Robin, It.Is.Gorgeous!

You know, it's funny that one of the notes listed be “everlasting flower” because recently I purchased a “babyface” facial cleanser from Lush products and noticed its distinct scent, an unusual smelling kind of floral. I thought it was perhaps the “everlasting flower” addition they'd listed. I think Bath and Bodyworks also includes it in their “higher end” line and I noticed something slightly different smelling about those products from the others–in an appealing way. I'd be interested in trying this.

I have given it only a very quick try, but do think anyone who loved the room spray will love this even more.

Am going to have to ask on MUA if Trussardi is distributed someplace here I don't know about.

You probably already know that “everlasting flower” is the same as immortelle? And come to think of it, I do not have that in the glossary and I should. It is not a note I like in any great quantities but it is not the focus of this one at all.

Sounds so good! I wish it was sold in smaller bottles incase I don't like it so I don't end up with a 100 ml bottle of something I'm not going to use. Sounds so good I simply can't resist though! Did You like it nowsmellthis? I'm curious whether You like/love/hate it?

I *sooo* miss L'Artisan's little 15 ml travel bottles. They still use them for some of their coffrets, but they used to do the whole line in that size and they were so perfect.

    I love it.

I know there are a LOT of incense and leatherheads out there who must be VERY excited about this release. I'm not much of an incense or leather fan myself, but even I'm intrigued! the notes sound very appealing – might be a lovely fall weather scent.

Oh. My. God. It has incense, leather, musk, & woods, patchouli? This sounds very exciting….
Sigh…. I have to repeat the mantra: I will not buy, I will not buy, I will not buy, I will not buy, I will not buy.
    But, I can always sniff?!

Yes! I don't have any mental primer to pull from, I'd just tried L'Atelier's “Imortelle” liked it and did some research on the note. Everlasting flower reminds me a bit of mimosa, although, less honeyed. I think mimosa is a fairly polarizing note, so if there are any similarities between it an imortelle, I'd imagine everlasting/imortelle might enter the “love it” or “detest it” category.

I think what it is that bothers me is when immortelle is given a sweet, maple syrup-y kind of finish, which sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't.

No, it really isn't. I want all those silly Japan-only Shiseido scents, and I want every city-exclusive Le Labo, and I want that darned violet thing for CdG that I've already forgotten the name of. Although that last one might make it to the US.

Ya'll will have to make do with the room spray until the fall. Actually, I really like the room spray on skin, although admittedly, it does feel like a room spray — kind of flat.

Yeah, the Shiseidos are definitely a must have!!! hehehe.

I have tried many times Basala/Basara and never decide to actually purchase a bottle. That is the only one we get here in Argentina.

The women are a little more lucky as they get some “body scents” along the cosmetics lines.

Still all the other elusive Japanese-Only frags drive me crazy.

My Japanese teacher is going to Japan next september, I wonder if I could ask her to bring me something??

    On to Basenotes! :-D

It sounds like just the sort of thing I would love, but even regardless of what the scent is like, that bottle is STUNNING. You just know they worked for a long time to get that perfect mulled-wine colour.

The AP shop in Prague is a franchise run by some guy from Serbia or similar country from the Balkans. I wonder whether he'll be able to smuggle this fragrance here. I sure hope so. They've smuggled worse things.

    Is there any soup left?

I have heard on POL from the person who sniffed this last week said it was so faint she could hardly smell it. Maybe musk anosmia, but I would really want to test this well before buying if it's so light some people can't smell it…

Wow, very interesting! I find it rather heavy, at least, rather heavy for July — was thinking October would be perfect timing. Also find the lasting power amazing for a L'Artisan scent.

Maybe some of us regulars here should form a commune so we can keep our cost of living down in order to feed our perfume habit? Hey… it will beat ending up on the streets. I seriously overspent this month…. sigh.

I need to fish out my Aedes room spray sample to see if I'm going to start craving this… people have been wearing the room spray as a perfume, have they not?

    Robin,

When I saw that you would be reviewing L'Artisan Parfumeur exclusive Aedes De Venustas Eau De Parfum tomorrow, I went back to this short review to remind myself of its components. I have to tell you that I absolutely LOVE this store!

They are the nicest people and the owner Karl (a stunningly courteous and handsome man!!) offered my a generous sample to try of the Lalique Encre Noire EDP in the crystal bottle that I have been coveting for so long. No pressure on me to buy it whatsoever! I am still thinking about it (or perhaps I should say “I am still trying to raise the funds” to buy it!)

The environment in their boutique located at 9 Christopher Street in the West Village in NYC is a haven for perfume lovers. No reader of this blog who is contemplating a visit to NYC should miss visiting Aedes De Venustas! I cannot wait to try L'Artisan Parfumeur Aedes De Venustas EDP either. I already have the candle. It just sounds like everything I love…and that bottle…It is absolutely beautiful! Can't wait to read your full review of it tomorrow either!

    Hi Robin,

The Encre Noire EDP 2 OZ Crystal Bottle is truly beautiful. Heavy black crystal and signed and numbered on its bottom and inside the stopper.

But I must say that I was disappointed with 2 aspects and I wonder why Lalique did not make an effort to improve either :

First, the cap made of Wenge wood is no different at all from the mass-produced cap of the EDT. You would think that they would at least make it larger…or heavier…or “richer”!

Second, the EDP itself goes directly into the heart and base notes bypassing the fresh top notes. It is “earthier” and “dirtier” than the EDT but does not last longer than the EDT on my skin…Isn't it a bit strange for a more concentrated and more exclusive EDP?

But as you (and Kevin) know, what's a “Bottle Collector Addict” to do in this situation?! I am seriously considering purchasing it when I can raise the $$$ (no more inheritances from grandmas and aunts anytime soon unfortunately. And the lottery, oh well, we tried that, you know…

    :-)

    Eric

Hey, you know, I'd entirely forgotten that the crystal bottle held a different concentration. I really like the EdT, and probably have enough earthy/dirty vetivers to last me.

That's disappointing about the cap. I would have assumed it would be real wood? The EdT one, I assume, is plastic.

I'm really not a bottle collector addict…I like looking at nice bottles, and if I'm buying something, I'd rather it be in a bottle I like, but I won't really pay “extra” to get a nicer bottle. If I'm dithering about whether or not to buy though, a nice bottle might push me over the edge.
