What your nose knows ~ perfume on the radio

Posted by Robin on 30 June 2008 2 Comments

Psychologist, smell scientist and entrepreneur Avery Gilbert talks about what your nose knows and how that science is used every day to create a scent for your world.

Plus, Jim Drobnick, co-curator of the "Odor Limits" exhibition at The Science Center in Philadelphia, Pa., takes a look at how artists have made use of smell in fiction, poetry, art and music — and how scent is being incorporated into artistic works and museum exhibits.

— Listen to What Your Nose Knows and How Artists Use It at NPR. About 35 minutes long, and I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet, please comment if you have. (found at Natural Perfumers Guild)

Well, happy early morning to you! (At least, that's how it seems; I found this about 2:00 central and had last checked about… 12:00.)
My, that was interesting. It's good to know that, according to scientists' best guess, there aren't really super-noses, just more adeptly-trained brains. MUST TRAIN HARDER. Dx (That's when you get an image of a cartoon brain in sneakers and a headband running around. =o )
I also found it interesting that it seems that our brains tag smells offensive merely by association.
And I always found lavender astringent. My sister used to use a lavender body wash and it always woke me up in the morning. Of course, I really don't like lavender in it's natural form; still trying to get over to Hermès and smell their “super-clean, genetically-enhanced” lavender in Brin de Réglisse, along with all the other Hermessences. Actually, I think I'll be getting over there this week. =D But, back on topic, I never saw lavender as old-lady. Maybe I just didn't know enough; my grandmothers never wore perfume (one was severely allergic and the other one could care less).
I just listened to it and I can't remember all that was mentioned, but I was kinda put off about the interviewer's fart question. Really, it's kind of inane. Dr. Gilbert can take us literally all through what we know about smell and you ask about farts? I'm not a big prude or anything but Jesus, what passes today….

Thanks for the details, I probably won't have time to listen to it until tonight.
