A few fragrant wishes for 2007

Posted by Robin on 2 January 2007 16 Comments

Narcissus drawingI was just looking over last year's perfume wishes and realizing how few had come to pass...oh well! Hope springs eternal, so here are a few wishes for this coming year:

I hope that at least a few of the Les Exclusifs de Chanel are fabulous, but not all of them: I can't afford to buy six new Chanel perfumes. I am hanging my hopes on 28 La Pausa, Bel Respiro and 31 Rue Cambon; if those 3 are good, I'll be very happy indeed.

I feel pretty much the same about the upcoming Tom Ford Private Blend Collection. May a few of them be wonderful and the rest just ok.

I hope that The People of the Labyrinths finally release a followup to Luctor et Emergo. We need a POTL no. 2. (Update: see POTL A.MAZE!)

I would love to see at least one mainstream celebrity go out on a limb and release a really unusual fragrance instead of the usual crowd pleaser.

But my biggest wish for 2007 is that we finally see some new fragrance trends. I keep reading that the trends are already changing, and that we will be moving on from the sweet-fruity-floral madness, but I've seen no evidence that it's true. I don't like sweet fruity florals, but really, I'm not trying to inflict my own tastes on anyone else; it is just that there are enough of them already. Even those who adore sweet fruity florals must find the plethora of options overwhelming. It is time to move on.

Note: the lovely drawing of Narcissus is via Laurelines.

In Angela's resolutions article (which I thought was written by you) I predicted you'd be interested in those three Chanels. I am interested most in No. 18 and the amber oriental, but Bel Respiro and 31 Rue Cambon sound tempting as well. I can't afford all four, so hopefully, as you say, there will be some disappointments! 🙂

I'm rooting for Gwen Stefani's new fragrance. May it be as original as she is! Although, for me, sampling “The Sound of Music” was just BAD….!!!!!!!!!

LOL — I'm easy to peg, aren't I? Highly unlikely I'll like the amber oriental. If the Eau de Cologne is fabulous, it could end up being a must-have, but that one doesn't seem like a likely bet.

    Hope we'll both get *something*!!

I don't know much about her, but several people have said they think she is a possibility for a good scent, so I'll be hopeful too 🙂

Yeah, nobody seems to be mentioning the cologne, so I'm betting it'll be the sleeper hit if it's atypical in any way. The chypre is probably going to come under the most scrunity, I'm guessing, do hopefully it will be good enough without the oakmoss to satisfy the doubters.

Here is to hoping that you wishes will come true! I also hope that not all 12 Ford fragrances will be great, otherwise I am in trouble. 🙂

I wholeheartedly second all of your wishes…except for this:
“We need a POTL no. 2.”
We don't! We need something different, don't we? Why would we need another POTL? Please, say we don't need another POTL! 🙂

I am going to just try to forget they ever called it a chypre, LOL…otherwise, I'm bound to be disappointed.

I did so well in 2006 in terms of spending, but 2007 could be dangerous 🙂

Well, by POTL I don't mean it as it is currently used (as an abbreviation for Luctor et Emergo), but as we'll have to use it in the future assuming they *do* release a 2nd scent, that is, as an abbreviation for the brand. Whew, did that make any sense? I'm tired 😉

I want POTL to live up to the name. It's bland, sweet cherry cough drops on me.

Hi Robin…I've been out of here for a little while, reading every day but haven't commented. I just love this site. Anyway…I'm SO with you on the sweet fruity floral issue. I've never been a fan and I wish more people would see it the way I do. There's so many amazing scents…but I could do without these. I know some love them…and to each his/her own. I guess I just don't find them interesting at all.

Actually, for my tastes, they'll have a hard time beating L&E, but sounds like you are going to be (maybe?) easier to please with something entirely different.

    Welcome back 🙂

Agree with “to each his/her own” — but for the rest of us, I do wish there was a bit more diversity. It still seems like 80% of the new releases are sweet fruity florals. Sigh.

Chypre. I'm thinking chypre and aldehydes should be the two MAJOR trends everyone gets on for the next two years.
I'm wondering if you'll be spending all your 2006 savings in 2007!
Also, I'm as sick of frooty-florals as you are, but somehow I can ignore them. The trend I'd really wish would go away are the nauseatingly sweet dessert-scents (JS Dessert, Pink Sugar, etc.)

Chypre, yes, aldehydes, maybe, and let me add woods, incense, anything but fruit!
