Trailer for Patrick Suskind's Perfume

Posted by Robin on 21 February 2006 12 Comments

The movie version of Patrick Suskind's Perfume, starring Dustin Hoffman, Ben Wishaw and Alan Rickman, is due for release later this year. See a brief trailer via Twitch. It is quite satisfyingly creepy.

It was a creepy tidbit, non? I haven't read the book although Alan Rickman alone makes me want to see this. Thanks for the link.

    That trailer gave me goosebumps.

I honestly thought the book–which I've read once a year since it was published–couldn't be filmed, but I'm dying to see what Tom Tykwer is going to do with it. If anyone can film it, he can.

I think it needs John Waters-style Odorama, though.

Completely 2nd the Alan Rickman comment! Do read the book though, its fun. Creepy, but fun.

Yes, yes, yes on the Odorama! And like you, not sure the book can really be done as a film without major alterations, but we shall see…

I cannot wait to see this – have read the fun and creepy book a couple of times. Somehow – I do not expect miracles when it comes to such adaptations – even with great actors like Hoffman, Rickman….it should be a gripping movie nevertheless.

I read this book a couple of years ago, before I started paying attention to perfume myself, and found it a delightfully unique horror story. I should read it again, and I will most definitely see the film.

I agree that it is a challenging adaptation since the story relies so much on the inner life of this character, but the cast and director make it promising.

    A great little book.

I read Perfume about 6 years ago, LOVED it. Am a little doubtful about being able to successfully adapt it to film, but hey, I'll go see it. Thanks for the info.

N, almost re-read the book, then thought no, it will be better if it is not too fresh in my mind when I see the movie…perhaps I won't be as disappointed.

Actually, I hope they just adapt it freely and don't try to stick too close to the book. It would work better, I think. Whatever — if Rickman's in it, I'll watch it ;-)

Just checked out the trailer – deliciously creepy and darkly erotic, looks like it might be a good adaptation.

I waited 20 minutes on dialup to DL *that*? Buggy, like the book, which I received from a creepy architect in '90. I had just met him, he knew of my perfume obsession, sent me that in the mail. The ending sucks. Yes, I haven't had my coffee yet, need to vent, lol.

Why in the hell don't they make a movie of Jitterbug Perfume? A romp, a stomp, a wild and crazy wafting of a really fun story about perfume.

    Where's that coffee?

Grumble — 20 minutes for a movie more about murder than perfume.

Ouch, 20 minutes!!! No, it wasn't worth that. But I saw it in about 2 minutes and liked the creepy aspect. You need a high speed connection, A!

Ashamed to say that I have read all of the early Tom Robbins, but not yet Jitterbug Perfume.
