New body spray makes women smell younger

Posted by Robin on 14 June 2005 7 Comments

Timeless View is a new body spray from The Smell and Taste Treatment & Research Foundation:

A preliminary clinical study found that men perceived women who wore this formula to be an average of six years younger than their actual age.

The spray had no effect on the perceptions of other women. If I remember correctly, similar results were obtained in experiments using sweat from younger women, but the only note listed for this spray is pink grapefruit. (via prnewswire)

Hilarious! Seems perfume was once marketed to make one feel older and sophisticated! LOL I had heard about the grapefruit thing, too…since I won't wear grapefruit as a fragrance, I guess I will remain an old hag! :P

Hmmm, that is interesting, particularly because from what I remember reading, grapefruit and sweat share some similar chemical substances. Grapefruit often tends to decompose on the skin to become more sulfurous, therefore it is usually used in its synthetic form.

Thanks for posting! These “preliminary” experiments (in science language that usually means “we think that this might possibly happen, however we have not done anything to establish a correlation yet”) really amuse me.

How odd. Maybe it has something to do with the prevalence of fresh citrus fruity scents in teen-marketed products. “Hmm, she smells just like my teenage niece.” Or maybe, as Victoria guesses, it does have something to do with the sweaty sulfurousness of grapefruit. Or maybe we're missing information. Like a second sentence: “Men perceived women in a control group, who wore no fragrance, as seven years younger than they really were, due to the tremendous quantity of Botox they'd had injected into their faces.”

Tania, you're hilarious! Grapefruit doesn't work on my skin so I'll join the “Old Hag” crew as well.

Well, that must explain my reaction to Guerlain AA Pamplelune, which I just cannot wear!

Well, I am quite sure we are missing information as to the notes, since the press release says nothing other than pink grapefruit. Grapefruit might actually be there to mask whatever the real active ingredient is.
